Removing names[edit]

HiMillionsandbillions, I've noticed several entries being removed because someone has removed them from Black Lives Matter. There's no requirement that the template be in sync with any article. What matters is whether the sources link these names to the movement. If they do, the names ought to be included in the template.

If someone has removed a name from the article inappropriately, that's an issue for discussion on that talk page, rather than a reason to remove the name from the template too. Sarah (talk) 16:31, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I mistakenly thought that every link in a template had to be included in the parent article but after rereading WP:NAVBOX I realize that I was wrong. I apologize for any mistakes I made while editing this template. I was not tring to be disruptive and I will try to avoid any such mistatkes in the future. -- Millionsandbillions (talk) 19:02, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Millionsandbillions: thank you, and don't worry about it. It's a common misunderstanding. Sarah (talk) 19:14, 13 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Typical original nonsense mess[edit]

This template, like Template:Black Power sidebar, is full of violations of WP:No original research. What, pray tell, do Rodney King (who died in 2012), Latasha Harlins (who was killed in 1991), and the 1992 Los Angeles riots have to do with Black Lives Matter (which was formed in 2013)? Why not include Emmett Till and Slavery in the United States as background? They're probably more directly relevant. 2601:14C:0:F6E9:B4A6:ABC6:D6CA:F708 (talk) 01:49, 27 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Agree. This is an inappropriate template for Wikipedia.Trumpetrep (talk) 17:59, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Why shouldn't we include the logo? I liked it. What do you think? Davey2010 --JumpLike23 (talk) 00:58, 1 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

jumplike23 - Because of copyright issues Logos should never be added in templates, Images and maps are fine but unfortunately logos aren't. –Davey2010Talk 01:34, 1 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Connected Events[edit]

The events below are connected.

--98.88.131.44 (talk) 12:25, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Reliable sources, please. — MShabazz Talk/Stalk 13:25, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Obama's statement on the attack in Baton Rouge--98.88.131.44 (talk) 13:31, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Even if a presidential press release were a reliable source, which it's not, I don't see any mention of Black Lives Matter—let alone the establishment of a connection between the movement and the shootings. — MShabazz Talk/Stalk 14:11, 18 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Anthem[edit]

Multiple sources connect these protests with BLM--JumpLike23 (talk) 00:12, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A "connection" with BLM does not mean it was organised/endorsed by BLM. Obama is connected to BLM also [1] but he does not appear in the template either. WWGB (talk) 00:18, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It is a significant related event. numerous articles with titles "protests inspired by BLM" BLM is a loosely affiliated movements similiar to the civil rights movement. It is not like when a corporation organizes a picnic where we know Toyota endorses the picnic. I have written extensively about BLM on wiki. Have you? --JumpLike23 (talk) 00:23, 7 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Song?[edit]

Is it worth including, in the 'related' section, Janelle Monáe's song "Hell You Talmbout"? DS (talk) 15:45, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"Groups associated with opposition"[edit]

This section of the template includes, as the heading suggests, groups that are associated with opposition to the Black Lives Matter movement. Nobody is saying that either Blue Live Matter, All Lives Matter, or the people who use those slogans are necessarily opposed to the Black Lives Matter movement or its goals, but I think it's hard to argue that they are not associated in the press and in the public mind with opposition to the Black Lives Matter movement. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 02:58, 10 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

A timeline or list of killings protested[edit]

Per WP:CLT, the section listing all the people whose killings by police have been protested by Black Lives Matter is very large. I propose creating a timeline of all the killings and protests, as a WP:SIZESPLIT from Black Lives Matter#Timeline of notable U.S. events and demonstrations. The timeline of BLM is extremely notable and comprehensive, just look at the RS. Let's not restrict ourselves to the BLM article. We have a plethora of photographs that we can use. wumbolo ^^^ 18:37, 3 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Please discuss at Talk:Black Lives Matter § A timeline or list of killings protested

Terry stop and Consent search[edit]

As per User:Magnolia677 request, I will discuss my addition to the "Black lives matter" template under the section "Related". I added Terry stop and Consent search. Personally, I feel a loosening of our Fourth Amendment right is a key to understanding the police's potential for violence. A quick example would be a officer wants to check out a car because of the way the driver looks, finds some pretext for pulling the driver over, starts unrelated questioning and requests permission to search vehicle. This is all related to an aggressive use of the local police to use common, everyday contacts to go around fishing for crime. So I feel what is happening with basic traffic stops and how they are being used to fight a war on drugs, etc, is pretty core to the issue of "Black lives matter". Admittedly, "terry stop" and "consent search" are pretty bland, technical terms. Something more of a slogan like "Take back the Fourth" would be better. Below is an article that discusses these issues in more depth:

Inclusion of non-USA cases in the "Deaths protested" section[edit]

Should cases of violence against black people which took place outside the USA but which have some form of connection to BLM be included here? I am asking primarily to see if the Murder of Lassana Cisse should be added to the template or not. This seems to have been a racially-motivated attack by two off-duty soldiers on a number of African migrants in Malta in 2019, which left one man dead and two others injured. Protests after the murder used the Black Lives Matter slogan, but I don't know if this is a sufficient criterion for its inclusion.

I see that a couple of non-USA cases are already included, eg. Shooting of Mark Duggan in the UK, Death of Abdirahman Abdi in Canada. Should the Malta murder be added as well? --Xwejnusgozo (talk) 07:45, 26 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

inclusion of jacob blake in the "Deaths protested" section[edit]

could be wrong, but as of when I'm writing this, there's been no confirmation the blake has passed away and most media still reports that he is in ICU at a hospital. Epluribusunumyall (talk) 09:04, 24 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

@Starship.paint: (or anyone else). I just started Black Lives Matter protests in New York City, which seems appropriate for inclusion here. But I'm not sure where it should be added? — Rhododendrites talk \\ 04:26, 14 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

NFAC[edit]

Starting a discussion here. From the page Not Fucking Around Coalition: "[The group] denies any connection to the Black Panther Party or Black Lives Matter." That sentence is the only reference to BLM on the page. Without a verifiable source expressed in the article saying plainly that NFAC is an arm of BLM or linked in any other way, we should not list them here, even if they share some ideological views. AllegedlyHuman (talk) 16:39, 12 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Size[edit]

This could easily be split three or four ways, as its current size is a hindrance to it being actually navigable. ~ Dissident93 (talk) 19:36, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps collapsing groups, like the deaths protested, would help. – Muboshgu (talk) 21:04, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Keep "Deaths protested" separated by year?[edit]

Thoughts on removing the subgroups for specific years under "Deaths protested"? I would think simply displaying names, sorted chronologically, would suffice. I doubt the average reader is searching by year and removing the subgroups would help reduce the overall template size a bit. ---Another Believer (Talk) 23:13, 13 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
