According to the article Flag of Iran, the key transitional date for flag colour is 1933.
There is one out of the way reference to 1925, but the main text uses 1933.
Partly done: Flag templates are for flags, not seals. I added the link alias; changing the default display text is currently not possible for military flag templates (you'd have to use |name= when using the {{air force}} template). SiBr4 (talk)18:20, 7 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I was just going to change my request regarding the image. Regarding the title, what about passing the title "Iranian Air Force", as the page title itsrlf, to the templace? I think it is important to keep it as short as possible because we usually use this stuff in infoboxes. --Z18:28, 7 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Not necessary. Those images are not widely used in icon form (and even so, those instances are likely not compliant with WP:MOSICON), so there is no need to add so much clutter to the flag template. If those images are really needed in icon form for a small number of articles, then {{flagicon image}} is perfectly appropriate, exactly as used above. — Andrwsc (talk·contribs) 22:32, 18 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Andrwsc and SMcCandlish: I did not get why it would not comply with WP:MOSICON. There are tons of articles in Category:Iranian military commanders that need these flags not provided before.
In the beginning I saw here in the template, {{flagicon|Iran|army}} and {{flagicon|Iran|air force}} do generate a wrong flag (). So I mooted it with an experienced designer with an specialty on Iranian insignias (User talk:MrInfo2012#About two files) and he designed the flags based on pictures of the flags. ({{flagicon|Iran|army}} and {{flagicon|Iran|air force}} should generate and respectively). The same goes for other flags listed above. Pahlevun (talk) 13:31, 19 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If your intent is to add these icons to the allegiance parameter of {{Infobox military person}}, then WP:INFOBOXFLAG certainly discourages that. Those particular flags are not well known (not as much as the national flag of Iran, for example), so a tiny 22px icon doesn't add anything useful to the encyclopedia whatsoever. — Andrwsc (talk·contribs) 16:23, 19 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I intended them for Service/branch parameter, as used in Ali Abdollahi and Mohammad Hossein Jalali. Anyway, If you are not adding other flags, please at least remove {{flagicon|Iran|army}} and {{flagicon|Iran|air force}} from the template, because they are generating wrong flags. Pahlevun (talk) 16:42, 19 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Pahlevun: adding illegible and little-known flag icons to "Service/Branch" isn't any more useful than adding them to "Allegiance". Military articles already have far too many flag icons. Maybe some people think they're cute, but they're not helpful to the reader except in a few limited circumstances, e.g. when used in place of long country (or whatever) names in tables that are already quite wide and detailed, and with a key/legend at the top saying what the flags stand for; or when used with country names in contexts where the two are almost invariably used together, such as Olympics scores, in which case the absence of the flag will be unexpected. It's entirely, totally, overwhelmingly routine for people to write (in any medium, for any audience) about military history matters without peppering the material with miniature flags, and readers do not expect them. "It is possible to insert a flag here" is in no way equivalent to "it is a good idea to insert a flag here". — SMcCandlish ☺☏¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ᴥⱷʌ≼ 05:34, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Remove
flag alias-1980 = Flag of Iran (WFB 2000).svg
flag alias-2000 = Flag of Iran (WFB 2000).jpg
flag alias-2004 = Flag of Iran (WFB 2004).gif
and
var12 = 1980
var13 = 2000
var14 = 2004
These flags are just based on the shades used in pictures in different editions of the CIA World Factbook and are not official or even real changes to the flag used by Iran, they should not be included and especially not linked to specific years as historical variants. These changes will not break anything
