March 2007[edit]

The image in the template that you erased was a logo and not fair use image that I enhanced in paintbrush. I did this in the same manner as done on the Duke template. Please help me understand the difference. I really get frustrated when I spend a considerable amount of time creating content and then others swoop in and just erase everything that I have done. • Hey! As creator of the Duke template, I can answer your question as to the difference. Although I do not know what Image:Fairfield Template Banner.PNG looked like, I assume that it was a modification of an official university logo. The image in the Duke template has nothing to do with any official university logo. Logos can only be used in instances of fair use, and using fair use as a reason in templates is prohibited. User:Fang Aili correctly wrote in the edit summary "rm fair use image - not usable in templates." Images in templates must be in the public domain. When I first created the Duke template, somebody proposed it for deletion saying "derivative work, even if created it on own." However, it was not derivative work because it wasn't based on anything I'd ever seen - it's just a silhouette of the Chapel. So, if you have a photo of the University that you took, or you create some image or logo that is not in existence, you can use it in the template. However, you cannot use official university logos in the template that require fair use rationales. Hope that helps explain the difference! -Bluedog423Talk 15:32, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
