Towns[edit]

Where is this list of towns from? Many of these are cities or hamlets; consider replacing the word "towns" with "populated places". Also, many of these are not on the Hudson River. Do you intend to list all populated places near the Hudson River? In the Hudson Valley? What is the cutoff point? ɱ (talk) 17:47, 5 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A watershed is geographically defined as the land area draining into a specified river (in this case the Hudson River.) The watershed boundary would be drainage divides for other river systems including the Susquehanna and Delaware Rivers to the west, the St. Lawrence River to the north, the Connecticut and Housatonic Rivers to the east, and smaller coastal tributaries close to the Atlantic coast. Some of these towns may not be near the Hudson River itself if they are along a Hudson River tributary; and, depending on the definition of the Hudson River valley (whether the valley includes all tributaries or if some of these tributaries are considered separate valleys) may or may not be within the valley. So if rain falling on the town would ultimately reach the Atlantic via the Hudson River, that town should be on the list. As to what term might describe these populated communities; I suggest encompassing all self-governing places without encouraging listing of subsidiary villages within larger towns, as that might produce an unreasonably long list. I suggest avoiding population threshold criteria, because some areas of the watershed are more densely populated than others, and land area is as significant as population from a watershed perspective. Thewellman (talk) 06:48, 6 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Makes sense, and is useful. I, for one, didn't realize that the Wallkill River starts in Sparta, New Jersey. That said, the list can easily become overwhelming if we include towns that are only along secondary tributaries instead of primary ones. Also, I decided to be bold and separate the NY & NJ towns into subgroups, because the list mixed them and it was impossible to tell which state the were in. oknazevad (talk) 04:42, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@, Thewellman, and Oknazevad: I noticed this discussion after starting a similar discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Rivers#Inclusion criteria for watershed templates. Your input would be welcome. Magnolia677 (talk) 17:59, 8 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
