Hi I feel that those figures should be left out since the template lists "major figures" in the history of Islam in China, and Editingman has not provided any reason why they are important figures in the history of Islam in China besides "I think they are important".
For example, Hui Liangyu a Communist official who is supposed to be officially atheist, Ma Bufang a Kuomintang warlord whose career ended in a scandal trying to force his niece to be one of his concubines, and Lan Yu a Ming dynasty general who happened to be Muslim. These individuals, other than the fact they were of Hui background do not really stand out as being notable figures in the history of Islam in China compared to figures like Liu Zhi, an Islamic scholar who wrote on Islam and Confucian philosophy. Hi I feel that those figures should not be removed since these are influential or important people from the minority Muslim community and are thus appropriate in the sectioned named "major" figures. For example, Ma Bufang, a Hui, was a warlord who rule the province of Qinghai, that is why he is important. So what has his crimes got to do with his influence? The communist official, who is also a Hui, happens to be the vice-premier of China and that is why he is important. Lan Yu is a Ming Dynasty general who ended Mongol attempts to reconquer China, which is quite important and yes, that they are Muslim matter because the section should be about Major Figures of Islam in China.Editingman (talk) 05:09, 3 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
-The Dungan are ethnic Hui whose ancestors fled to Central Asia and the Panthay are ethnic Hui whose ancestors fled to Myanmar. These two groups are currently living outside the borders of the PRC, if they were in the PRC still, they would be counted as members of the Hui ethnic group.Abstrakt (talk) 01:08, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Totally agree with you Abstrakt. We only count the ones in 56 official recognized ethnic groups in the People's Republic of China, not included the people live outside China.
The title is about Islam and China, so Chinese Muslims who fled are relevant. Just to clarify, the is about China, not necessarily the PRC. Editingman (talk) 03:56, 20 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I see that the issue was raised back in 2008. I think military officers shouldn't be included or any other individual that is not strictly a religious figure or wasn't influential on the development of the religion in a certain region. Therefore, I suggest we remove these individuals:
