Reincarnation of the best king of Sparta. (Main page on the French Wikipedia)

The Argians and their allies, when they saw them, occupied a strong and inaccessible position, where they formed their battle lines. The Spartans immediately marched against them; they advanced within stone or javelin range, but then one of the elders, seeing the solid position towards which they were heading, called out to Agis. He exclaimed that he intended to remedy one problem with another, meaning that this untimely zeal was meant to compensate for his criticized retreat before Argos. And the king, either because of this interjection or by virtue of a sudden, different, or even similar inspiration, quickly led his army back before any engagement. They arrived near the territory of Tegea and there began diverting the waters towards that of Mantinea. These waters, which cause damage to one side or the other depending on where they flow, almost constantly provoke war between Tegea and Mantinea. However, he wanted the men from the hill, concerned about countering the measures taken to divert the waters, to be forced to descend as soon as they received the news, which would allow him to fight on the plain. [...] Thus, this battle unfolded, or nearly so; it was the most significant one fought among the Greeks since ancient times and involved some of the most powerful peoples. The Spartans established themselves armed in front of the enemy's corpses, and then immediately set about erecting a trophy and stripping the dead. They gathered their own dead and sent them to Tegea, where they were buried, and returned the enemy dead under a truce. Among the people of Argos, Orneae, and Cleonae, seven hundred men had died; among the Mantineans, two hundred; among the Athenians, including the Aeginetans, two hundred, along with the two strategoi. On the Spartan side, the allies had not suffered losses worthy of mention, and for Sparta itself, it was quite difficult to ascertain the truth, but it was said that around three hundred had died.
