The Firefox brand is a group of products and services by Mozilla, largely centered around the Firefox web browser. As of September 2019, the brand includes the browser itself, Lockwise, Monitor, and Send. Additionally, the podcast, IRL – Online Life Is Real Life, is provided by Mozilla and uses the Firefox brand.
The Firefox brand itself has been in use since 2004;[1] however, it has historically been used largely by the browser itself. In June 2019, Mozilla announced that Firefox would become a brand of privacy-focused software and services.[2][3]
Firefox Lockwise, formerly known as Firefox Lockbox, syncs logins from the Firefox browser to the Firefox Lockwise app. It is developed by Mozilla and came out on 21 May 2019. Lockwise is available for iOS and Android.
Firefox Lockbox was introduced for iOS on 10 July 2018 as part of the Test Pilot Program.[8] On 26 March 2019 it was released for Android[9] and renamed Firefox Lockwise on 4 June 2019.[10]
Firefox Monitor is an online service developed by Mozilla, announced in June 2018 and launched on September 25, 2018.[11] It informs users if their email address and passwords used has been leaked in data breaches, using the database provided by Have I been Pwned? (HIBP) and working with HIBP's creator, Troy Hunt.[11][12]
Firefox Send is a free-to-use, online file-sending service, able to handle files up to 2.5 GB.[13] It was developed by Mozilla and is licensed under the terms of the open sourceMozilla Public License.[14] Development started in 2017[15] and it came out of beta on 12 March 2019.[16]
Send is written in JavaScript using Node.js.[17] All files are encrypted before being uploaded and decrypted on the client after downloading. The encryption key is never sent to the server.[18]
