Abbate Bakery is a family owned Italian bakery business located in Matawan, NJ. It is open 6 days a week, Tuesday through Saturday, and closed on Mondays. The name of the bakery derives from the last name of the owner, Victor Abbate. On the store sign, a picture of the owner's mother and father is illustrated, as they are the originators of the brand.
History As the owner and his family moved to America from Sicily, Italy, they settled in Brooklyn, New York. In 1976, they then opened a small bakery. It wasn't until 1990 when the son, the owner of Abbate Bakery Matawan, moved the original location to 69th Street and 15th Avenue on his own. He kept the business in Brooklyn until 2000, and opened up the second Abbate Bakery in Matawan, NJ. The Abbate Bakery in Brooklyn has since closed, and the Matawan location has been open for 15 years and counting.
Abbate Bakery offers custom specialty cakes, cookies, pastries, Danish, breakfast items, and breads, all made on the premises daily. This business is not a nut-free facility. Their most popular sellers are cannoli, sfogliatelle, linzer tart cookies, [[apple turnovers]], black and white cookies, seven layer cookies, pignoli cookies, and prosciutto bread. All baked goods in the store are available for pre-order daily.
Each customer is assisted by an employee who also handles the cash register at the end of purchase. As customers order over the counter, the baked goods are packed in either wax bags, paper bags, or boxes, according to the customer's preference. Upon purchasing, customers do not have the option to sit and eat in this bakery, whereas they order "to-go", resulting in their exit of the store directly after their purchase. This bakery does not sell coffee or any other caffeinated drinks.
