Commedia dell'Arte Day

[edit]

The Commedia dell'Arte Day (Commedia Day) was proclaimed in 2010 and is celebrated every year on February 25th. The date was chosen to commemorate the day on which, in 1545, in Padua, the first known contract between professional comedians was signed with a notary. Commedia dell'Arte is an italian theatre tradition that spread throughout Europe during the Renaissance and contributed greatly to the creation of modern Western theater.

The Commedia dell'Arte Day was proclaimed by the SAT association. SAT, founded in 1993, brings together all the bearers of the Commedia dell'Arte tradition in the world and manages the incommedia.it video Archive of the community of the holders of the Commedia dell'Arte tradition. For these activities, SAT has been recognized as a NGO consultant for the 2003 UNESCO Convention until 2005.

The Commedia Day brings together events that take place all over the world and each year a flagship capital is established where the main activities are concentrated. Up to now the cities of Bologna, Turin, Malaga, Istanbul, Malta, Santiago de Chile, Singapore, Sidney have been the flagship capitals. Each year the UNESCO Commissions of the host state of the flagship capital have provided their patronage to prove the interest in a tradition worthy of being part of the 2003 Convention on Intangible Heritage. The Italian Centre of ITI (International Theatre Institut) has provided his patronage to the celebration for several editions.
