This is the personal project page on all amendments made on the List of minor planets (LOMP) and its 450+ partial lists.

Link revision (on designations)[edit]

Link-revision is a set of first changes to clean-up the 470+ partial lists (or their corresponding, then still-existing subpages), including a syntax revision, the removal of self-redirects on items in column "Designation" (which are the linked "Minor planet object articles", for short: MPOAs), the removal of redlinks on MPOAs, as well as a spell-check (e.g. diacritics) on the subset of named minor planets in the list.

Edit comment: check MP-object articles > link revision on designations

Syntax-revision[edit]

Done and finished in November 2015. Removal of dashes, outdated templates, custom anchors, custom references, vandalism, inconsistencies with usage of subpages.

Self-redirects[edit]

Link-revision's primary goal is to remove SELF-REDIRECTS from the List of minor planets using an external online app, which adds or removes links on minor planets depending on whether or not an existing article is redirected to this list (By default named minor planets are linked, unless redirected, producing a redlink for non-existing articles, while still provisionally designated minor planets are never linked unless an article actually exists). The online-app also updates a minor planet's provisional designation to its final designation when being named, based on MPC's Discovery Circumstances: Numbered Minor Planets y–y (example) with its diacritical names (mostly correct and mostly updated within days after a Minor Planet Circular, "M.P.C." has been released). Per run, the app verifies for 10 x 100 entries (full content of a partial list with up to a thousand entries). The List of minor planets can be easily updated by copy/pasting the generated wiki-source code.

Removal of redlinks on unnamed bodies[edit]

Link-revision removes redlinks on all entries with a provisional designation. While redlinks for named bodies in the List of minor planets#Main index are welcomed (as they indicate, that neither a proper article, nor a #REDIRECT to one of the many list-pages exist), it is not feasible for several reasons to have redlinks for unnamed, bodies with a provisional designation. If a numbered minor planet with a provisional designation is notable, an article should be created and a link added to the list. Otherwise such list-entries remain unlinked by default.

Name check[edit]

The app extension verifies minor planet names, with focus on diacritics. The List of minor planets#Main index may or may not contain an inappropriate name. The list is compared to the Minor Planet Center's "NumberedMPs-list" containing 5,000 entries per page (see corresponding links in table header below).

Merger of subpages and layout revision[edit]

Merging 10 × 100 → 1000 items from undesired subpages into main partial lists. The first 200 pages in List of minor planets were using subpages (each page of 1000 items was composed of 10 subpages containing 100 items). Since subpages are deprecated and the pages of List of minor planets above #200,000 do not use subpages anymore, this task created consistency and compliance with wiki guidelines at the same time. A web-app was used for merging 2,000 subpages into 200 main list-pages. The merger also included a layout revision (table headers, article footer).

Index page revision[edit]

Completing partial list with missing bodies[edit]

This task completes the partial lists of minor planets (pLOMP) so that it should contain 1,000 bodies. The revision uses MPC's 5k list (listed in External link section) as a source. Detailed task description:

Since March 2017, this task includes the colorization of table rows, previously done in a separate edit. For a detailed description of the used colors and orbital criteria, see task: § Orbital classification by background-color.

Remarks[edit]

Revision on column "Discoverers"[edit]

The colum "Discoverer(s)" is being amended for all partial LOMPs. Details of revision:

Orbital classification by background-color[edit]

The tables in the partial minor planet lists (pLOMPs) have been colorized. Each table row, which contains an entry for a numbered minor planet, received a background-color based on the body's orbital classification.

Data source

The colorization is based on the data found in "Numbered Asteroids (50 MB)", an ASCII text-file from JPL's Small-Body Orbital Elements page. The data file was completed for Q and q as follows:

Orbital classification

The orbital classification largely follows JPL's conventions (see definitions below), except for the boundary of inner/outer main-belt asteroids which are grouped by the two major Kirkwood gaps (a at 2.5 and 2.82 AU, instead of JPL's 2.0 and 3.2 AU). Also the Apollo, Amor, Aten and Atira groups have no distinct color and are displayed with one color as NEOs.

Color scheme tests

Some of the first preliminary designs were made as early as September 2015 and may be superseded by {{Minor planet color code legend}}.

2019 make "meaning" link more prominent[edit]

As of January 2019, and based on 3 years of observing and correcting numerous unfortunate edits, that tried to partially link a minor planet designation to the article of the person the object was named after, I came to the conclusion that the "meanings"-link in the tables last column needs to be more prominent. It is now displayed as the third column of the table. Also, instead of the objects number, the actual name is displayed. A newly added {{JPL}} in the Ref-column is now shown in place of the previous meanings-link. Further changes:
