John Stuart Mills Boyhood Visit To France.

John Stuart Mill refered to this visit as one of the great formative events in his life

Mill left Dover for Calais on May 16th 1820 (four days short of his fourteenth birthday). He returned to England in July 1821. In France he stayed with the family of Sir Samuel Bentham. Mill spent one month at Bagneres-de-Bigorre. He arrived at Montpellier on Oct 15 1820. He arrived in Paris April 24 1821.

The Mountain scenery left a great impression on Mill and would lead him to Wordsworth who proved to be the antidote to his mental "crisis" It was on this tour that Mill began his lifelong love of botany. His trip to France resulted in a keen and lifelong interest in Continental Liberalism.
