Wikiproject Afrocreatives[edit]

Hello, i am expressing interest in contributing to WikiProject Afrocreatives but would first like to know more about it. You seem to have a deeper idea about it than what is highlighted in the info page Heatrave (talk) 11:31, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I just saw this new project page and am interested in sharing my knowledge and time. - I have written several articles about Sudanese films and filmmakers and will add this project to their talk pages. - Thanks, Assem Khidhr for already adding this project to films from Sudan. Best, Munfarid1 (talk) 16:40, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Heatrave and @Munfarid1! I'm glad you found it interesting! Feel free to explore more about our scope from our meta page. We are basically aiming to improve and expand the image of African creatives in general and film and TV professionals in particular.
We are now in the middle of an edit-a-thon campaign in partnership with FESPACO, the continent's biggest panafrican film festival. To help kickstart the contributions in this campaign, we've compiled some tools on our WikiProject page to act as a starting point for interested editors. Check it out too. And in line with your experience in Sudan-related articles, @Munfarid1, I think you'll make a very good use of our tools as almost all of them are divided by country. For example, you can find all Sudanese film professionals who are on Wikidata but don't have articles on enWP. Happy editing! Assem Khidhr (talk) 17:10, 21 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

class parameter[edit]

When you add a WikiProject banner, please can you not add |class= (e.g. [1]) because this parameter should be added to the banner shell, not the individual banner. Thanks — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 11:32, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @MSGJ! I'm aware of the distinction. In fact, I too wasn't satisfied with the closing braces being added to a new line, but this seems to be the default in Kingbotk which I'm using for convenience as my own regex had some false negatives. Apart from the few extra bytes, does having a redundant |class= parameter otherwise have any negative impacts or break any other templates or bots? If need be, I can definitely copy the plugin's regex into the native advanced find and replace and modify it. If you know of another way the plugin can be modified, by all means. I'm stopping tagging until I hear back from you. Assem Khidhr (talk) 12:14, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No negative effects, just general tidiness really. And I see what you mean about the new line. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:06, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Slow down[edit]

You are tagging many talk pages for the AfroCreatives WikiProject when I think you must mean to tag a different article. For example, you tagged the talk page for the disambiguation page This Is It, but I'm guessing your intended target was This Is It (TV series). You have tagged several other disambiguation pages when I think a more specific target was intended. Please slow down and go back and check your edits to make sure you are tagging the correct pages. —ShelfSkewed Talk 04:02, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @ShelfSkewed! Yes I've already started reverting those false positives. My code grabbed Wikidata labels instead of article titles. Thanks for the heads-up, though. Assem Khidhr (talk) 04:04, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. Looks like an interesting & worthwhile project, too. Happy editing! —ShelfSkewed Talk 04:08, 17 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Article tagging[edit]

I've noticed you've been mass-tagging talk pages with the AfroCreatives WikiProject using AWB. This in itself isn't a problem but the code you're using seems to automatically remove the living parameter on biographical articles. For example, see this edit which replaced the blp tag in the banner shell with an empty parameter. These edits have caused a backlog of over 650 pages in Category:Biography articles without living parameter (the living parameter is required on all biography articles). For reference, this category is usually empty.

Before you continue tagging, please make sure to fix this bug.

Thanks, Clearfrienda 💬 14:36, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, @Clearfrienda! This is actually one of AWB's general fixes, which are enabled by default in AutoWikiBrowser (...) [and] intended to be uncontroversial and require minimal human oversight. That being said, WPBS's documentation does ask to Set to |blp=no for dead persons. This parameter must be added for biographical articles. I'm not sure which guidelines are more up-to-date. Please feel free to share your thoughts on this and I can sure use AWB to restore the paramter if need be. Best, Assem Khidhr (talk) 16:10, 18 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about the the late response. I was confused by this policy too. Turns out this has been issue for a few months now and nothing has been done about it. AWB should not be removing the blp parameter from banner shells. See Template talk:WikiProject banner shell#BLP_tagging, Wikipedia talk:AutoWikiBrowser/Archive 34#Request to change banner shell general fixes and this Phabricator issue. If you can, please make sure to disable this general fix before running AWB again. Clearfrienda 💬 21:26, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Spider-Verse tagging[edit]

Regarding the inclusion of the AfroCreatives WP, I tagged those Spider-Verse articles with it because those films hail from African-American creatives and have had a significant and notable impact on the representation of African culture in the western world, thus, I thought they would be notable and worth including. I feel like the project's scope may need to be further explained and clarified as I have seen some entires, such as The Old Guard 2, included when there does not seem to be an apparent link to African creatives (besides Charlize Theron being one of the stars). While I understand the distinction between true Africans and African-Americans, I feel like excluding those of African descent and their projects may be a disservice to the project's scope. Trailblazer101 (talk) 00:29, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Trailblazer101! Thanks for your interest in the project. Ideally, the target is African creative figures and works that are helmed by such figures. I understand that the attribution of this African character can seem arbitrary at times, but we have decided to consider a citizenship of one of the recognized 54 African countries or a first-generation descent thereof the bare minimum.
That being said, figures whose repertoire or self-professed affiliations are not much in line with their African citizenship (especially as it can sometimes be acquired honorarily) would be considered as low-importance. Probably our foremost priority now is to assign importance in this manner to the many articles we currently have (I'll make sure it's added to our todo list ASAP).
To answer your question, we have also decided for pragmatic reasons to get along with the de facto convention in film categories on Wikipedia which differentiates between Category:Cinema of Africa, for example, and Category:African films. Namely, the former is more general as it also includes films set or shot in Africa whereas the latter is limited to:
1) Films directed by African people
2) Films produced by African people
3) Bona fide African films (mostly African crew and budget).
Only African films were added to our project. Cinema of Africa was too broad. Spider-Verse films were in neither. The Old Guard 2 is a case-in-point for the second category, having been produced by Charlize Theron. So while the African diaspora is in fact one of our main focuses, we try to use our discretion to find the sweet spot between too foreign and only local. I'll try in the nearest future to expand on all this on the project's page. Best, Assem Khidhr (talk) 01:00, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
