Disambiguation link notification for February 24[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Chromosome, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Transcription. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

It's OK to remove this message. Also, to stop receiving these messages, follow these opt-out instructions. Thanks, DPL bot (talk) 08:59, 24 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This text[edit]

"As an extreme example, a patient's immune system is entirely destroyed intentionally before a bone-marrow transplant is performed. This is done to ensure that the donor bone-marrow can enter the long bones and take hold - re-establishing an immune system without risking attack and inevitable destruction of these cells by a person's own bone-marrow."

is not exactly correct. A person immune system is entirely destroyed as this is a side effect of the severity of the chemotherapy used. As the immune system has been so negatively effected a bone marrow transplant is than needed to restore immune function as it is unable to recover on its own.

Please use references for the text you add. Best Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 22:13, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Both are True[edit]

While chemotherapy does indeed have many nasty side effects which include immunosuppression, many bone marrow transplants are indeed preceded by an intentional destruction of natural immunity. This is known as myeloablation. I didn't cite it because it is stated on other relevant Wiki Pages - ie bone marrow transplantormyeloablation. Here is the quote from that page:

Conditioning regimens Myeloablative

The chemotherapy or irradiation given immediately prior to a transplant is called the conditioning regimen, the purpose of which is to help eradicate the patient's disease prior to the infusion of HSC and to suppress immune reactions. The bone marrow can be ablated (destroyed) with dose-levels that cause minimal injury to other tissues. In allogeneic transplants a combination of cyclophosphamide with total body irradiation is conventionally employed. This treatment also has an immunosuppressive effect that prevents rejection of the HSC by the recipient's immune system. The post-transplant prognosis often includes acute and chronic graft-versus-host disease that may be life-threatening. However, in certain leukemias this can coincide with protection against cancer relapse owing to the graft versus tumor effect.[19] Autologous transplants may also use similar conditioning regimens, but many other chemotherapy combinations can be used depending on the type of disease.

Also, here is another direct quote from that introduction:

"It is a medical procedure in the field of hematology, most often performed for patients with certain cancers of the blood or bone marrow, such as multiple myeloma or leukemia. In these cases, the recipient's immune system is usually destroyed with radiation or chemotherapy before the transplantation. Infection and graft-versus-host disease are major complications of allogeneic HSCT."

Regardless, thank you for your input. Bomb319 (talk) 22:38, 30 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
