The Search for Modern China

Hi! I thought I would start The Search for Modern China. As I've gotten busy lately I'll try adding more sources in pieces. WhisperToMe (talk) 00:45, 17 August 2022 (UTC)

Off to a good start! If you have access to a copy, you might add a comment or two that SPence makes in the Preface or Introduction to explain in his own words what he set out to accomplish. Maybe add that there is a shorter, revised edition.ch (talk) 22:29, 17 August 2022 (UTC)

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election are opening in a few hours (00:01 UTC on 1 September). A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next coordination year. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting doesn't commence until 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the current coord team. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 17:51, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

Correction to previous election announcement

Just a quick correction to the prior message about the 2022 MILHIST coordinator election! I (Hog Farm) didn't proofread the message well enough and left out a link to the election page itself in this message. The voting will occur here; sorry about the need for a second message and the inadvertent omission from the prior one. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 17:40, 15 September 2022 (UTC)

Ways to improve Clement Egerton

Hello, CWH,

Thank you for creating Clement Egerton.

I have tagged the page as having some issues to fix, as a part of our page curation process and note that:

Thanks for the article and well done! I've marked this as reviewed, but if you could expand the lead that would be great!

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, leave a comment here and begin it with {{Re|VickKiang}}. Remember to sign your reply with ~~~~. For broader editing help, please visit the Teahouse.

Delivered via the Page Curation tool, on behalf of the reviewer.

VickKiang 23:45, 18 September 2022 (UTC)

Many thanks for the quick review and suggestions. The information on Egerton is quite slim except for the rich material on his work on Golden Lotus, which was my main concern. But you are quite right to want more on his overall career in the lede. ch (talk) 02:40, 19 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi CWH. Back in June you added a reference for "Plaks" to Classic Chinese Novels. There are two cites for Plaks in the article 1978 and 1987, do you remember which work this relates to? -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 18:16, 17 November 2022 (UTC)

My face is red -- thank you for picking up on this. The reference is to Plaks 1987, and I think my problem was to summarize sections of Chapter One. But I should have put a range of pages. There is a link to the Online Archive.ch (talk) 23:34, 17 November 2022 (UTC)
I've added the year, and used loc= to specify chapter 1. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested transmissions °co-ords° 12:52, 18 November 2022 (UTC)

Trying to find an editor who may be interested in making other language wiki articles about Raise the Red Lantern (novella)

I was trying to find an editor on DEWiki who may be interested in making an article in German on en:Raise the Red Lantern (novella). The German translation has a doozy of a history based on a German newspaper article. Do you know German, Dutch, Russian, and Japanese speakers who may be interested in writing about the novella in the respective languages? (doesn't have to be a full translation of the Enwiki article, but a start/stub)

Thank you, WhisperToMe (talk) 02:02, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

This is a great idea -- the article would connect to a number of interesting topics. But alas, though I do know a little Japanese, I don't have the other languages. I'll keep my eye out.ch (talk) 05:49, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
Thank you! The Japanese title is ja:妻妾成群. This URL talks about the Japanese translation ( "「妻妾成群 紅夢」千野拓政/訳 『季刊中国現代小説』第I20号 1992.1"). I like to use ja:Wikipedia:Chatsubo as a resource to get help from the JAwiki community. WhisperToMe (talk) 02:29, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

China is a sleeping dragon

Hello CWH! I was patrolling a page that you had created, and was wondering about it's target. In particular, the "Napoleon's "China is a sleeping giant" quote. At a first glance, this page title seems quite drawn-out, and the redirect you created of China is a sleeping dragon, while not the primary version of the quote, already feels like a much more approachable title.

First and foremost, the subject of the article appears to be the quote. Because of this, it seems to me that the title of the page shouldn't start with "Napoleon", but rather the title should simply BE the quote itself. Of course, I would still like to keep the existing title as a redirect for navigation purposes, but I'm not as familiar with this particular subject matter. From my eyes, the subject is not Napoleon, but his alleged quote, and therefore his name should be in the lede instead of the title. Please advise, and thank you. Utopes (talk / cont) 05:15, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi, Utopes, and thanks for looking into this with care. You are right that the "target" or subject of the article is the quote, but the quote only becomes notable when it is (falsely) attributed to Napoleon. The Napoleon website in Paris has a posting on the quote, one of the indications that it is a topic of its own. Otherwise the title doesn't describe the article.
WP:CRITERIA says a title should be "no longer than necessary to identify the article's subject and distinguish from other subjects", and "balance brevity with sufficient information to identify the topic to a person familiar with the general subject area".
The articles in the "See also" section are similar, so maybe we need a category, but that's a question for another day.
So I'm glad for the prod to think this through, but though the title is awkard, I still think it's the right one.ch (talk)

Category:Children of American missionaries in China has been nominated for merging. A discussion is taking place to decide whether this proposal complies with the categorization guidelines.
