The WikiProject Film Newsletter Volume V, no. 12 - December 2010
Project news
As 2010's credits have concluded rolling, our project had another successful year in improvements in various areas throughout the project. We saw the completion of the Tag & Assess Drive, which resulted in 31,000 articles being reviewed and re-assessed. In January, the most popular article of the year for WP:FILM was Avatar, reaching 5.1 million views for the month. Guidelines for writing film articles changed significantly, so if you have not already, it would be a good idea to re-read the page for bringing current articles into compliance with guidelines. As we improved dozens of articles to GA/FA/FL status in 2010, consider making a New Year's resolution to bring an article up to a higher class, pushing yourself to reach a level you have not yet reached. With over 150 members, our project would see great success if each editor worked to improve just one article.
WP:HORROR, our sister WikiProject, is currently holding a discussion on how to revitalize the project. Consider weighing in on how the project can better serve the articles under its scope and its members.
Koavf has suggested bringing The Fountain up to FA and would welcome assistance from other editors in further improving the article. It is currently undergoing a peer review, where any comments would be helpful for the article's journey to FAC.
Based on views, the top five most popular articles from our project this month were: Tron, Tron: Legacy, Inception, Black Swan, and Transformers: Dark of the Moon. For a list of our project's top 1,000 most popular articles, see here. Consider helping to improve one of these articles that is seen by thousands to millions of people each month.
At the beginning of 2010, WP:FILM had 63,000 film articles. Our project currently has over 78,300 film-related articles, with over three hundred unassessed articles, thanks to the assessment department! Remember to always add the {{WikiProject Film|class=}} template to a film article's talk page so the project can get a better idea of what work still needs to be done. If you believe that an article should be assessed at a certain class, feel free to follow the assessment scale and assess the article yourself (it's not too difficult to determine the basic classes such as stubs, categories, or lists). Below is a table showing a breakdown of our articles by class.
Spotlight Update: Multiple films and film-related articles have reached GA and FA status in December 2010.
Remember that any editor can give the WikiProject Film Award to another WP:Films member. If you do present this award, please make mention of it here or tell one of the newsletter editors who will then include it in the next issue.
Please add your name to the member list if you have not already.
If you've just joined, add your name to the Participants section of Wikipedia:WikiProject Film. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy!
Lastly, this is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue (Issue 1 – January 2011). Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned, or just start editing!
hi
just a note about the deletion of the article on Tempora Heroica.
Tempora Heroica or TH is a MUD (multi user dungeon) based on a long serious of MUDS going back to the original MUD codebase, the first multiplayer internet game. TH is one of the original DIKUMUD games and is the 'child' of Archipelago MUD which was developed in 1993 from CircleMUD. The reason a lot of online material has dissapeared regarding TH is simply the growth in MMPORGS and decline in interest in MUDs. I used to maintain a page describing the Arch Code (Archipelago MUD code which TH is based on) and I will put this online shortly, including some links to information about TH across the Web which still survive. I must say it is strange that this article has been removed given its historic significance for the internet and indeed educational technology research as a service hosted by ibiblio. When I have Ihave re-hosted my old pages I will come back and either request the article is re-added or create a new article on the branch of MUDs concerning Archipelago/ Tempora Heroica, which are historic software from the earliest days of the net.

Thanks. And I definitely agree; the more editors involved in archiving, the better. I cringe every time I use an online source that I didn't dig up through the Wayback Machine.
Unfortunately, WebCite is a fairly poor substitute, in my opinion, as it doesn't allow users to travel between cached pages without completely changing cache URLs. It's a real pain for multi-page articles. But hey, Internet Archive doesn't let you archive on demand, so at least that's something. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 21:07, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
Oh, and I plan to put your Featured List article to good use. I created a list as the main article for the future Looking Glass Studios games GT, and need, eventually, for it to be featured. Thanks for writing it; it'll definitely help, as I've never written a FL before. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 21:13, 6 January 2011 (UTC)
WikiXDC: Wikipedia 10th Birthday!
National Archives and Records Administration (NARA)
Description: There will be a behind-the-scenes tour of the National Archives and you will learn more about what NARA does. We will also have a mini-film screening featuring FedFlix videos along with a special message from Jimmy Wales. In the afternoon, there will be lightning talks by Wikimedians (signup to speak), wiki-trivia, and cupcakes to celebrate!
Details & RSVP: Details about the event are on our Washington, DC tenwiki page.
Please RSVP soon as possible, as there likely will be a cap on number of attendees that NARA can accommodate.
Another OTRS request, the Flikr page is non-commercial, but the image on wp is commercial, I have been informed that the OTRS confirms the change in license Fasach Nua (talk) 20:56, 11 January 2011 (UTC)
David, I've restored this and protected it against further moves. There were two AfDs (or rather there was one: closed as keep, reopened, and closed again as keep). There is also an ongoing merge discussion on talk, for which there's currently no consensus. If you want to it be merged, please take part in that discussion, or take the AfD decision to deletion review. I can see where you're coming from, but there's likely to be a great deal of drama if this is redirected and protected out of process. I hope you understand. SlimVirgintalk|contribs19:18, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
From SV talk
He has not been convicted and is currently only notable for the shooting; BLP#1E and PERP considerations apply. There was a merge discussion on the talk page. I really wish you would be willing to consult first instead of reverting blindly. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk)19:14, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
Considering that you've been previously involved in the discussion, I would hope that you wouldn't assume that I'm trying to get "my way". Either way I'm not going to fight a wasteful war. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk)19:25, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
I haven't been involved in the discussion, David, so far as I recall. I'm involved in a few Tucson-related articles as an admin only. I have no opinion on content, or whether that one should be merged. But there has to be consensus to do so, and there currently isn't. Redirecting it against consensus will only get people riled for no reason. SlimVirgintalk|contribs19:29, 13 January 2011 (UTC)
Hello. This message is being sent to inform you that there currently is a discussion at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Incidents regarding an issue with which you may have been involved. Thank you.

Wikipedia Ambassador Program is looking for new Online Ambassadors
Hi! I noticed your activity as a Good Article reviewer, and wanted to let you know about the Wikipedia Ambassador Program, and specifically the role of Online Ambassador. We're looking for friendly Wikipedians who are good at reviewing articles and giving feedback to serve as mentors for students who are assigned to write for Wikipedia in their classes.
If you're interested, I encourage you to take a look at the Online Ambassador guidelines; the "mentorship process" describes roughly what will be expected of mentors in the coming term. If that's something you want to do, please apply!
You can find instructions for applying at WP:ONLINE. The main things we're looking for in Online Ambassadors are friendliness, regular activity (since mentorship is a commitment that spans several months), and the ability to give detailed, substantive feedback on articles (both short new articles, and longer, more mature ones).

RE:Lara Croft
Yeah I got it. Just haven't had the time to do anything with it. :-p It came in before Xmas, and the plan was to expand the article then re-nominate first week of January... Best laid plans of men I guess. Thanks for the heads up. (Guyinblack25talk15:22, 21 January 2011 (UTC))
It would appear that the one element left to resolve in the FAC is the non-free images. I know you gave your support to the images as they were, but it seems Sandy isn't quite convinced yet. You're more experienced with all this non-free bureaucracy than I am, I don't suppose you could strengthen the fair use rationale on File:Guybrush Threepwood TMI concepts.jpg? I'm definitely of the mind that this image is perfectly justified, and I've redone the caption and expanded the text in the design section to help accomodate it, but I suck at doing decent rationales to go with. Any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Don't worry about the other non-free image, I'm going to replace that with one with far less baggage as Jappalang suggests in the FAC. -- Sabre (talk) 16:33, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Well, the bits I did add to the design section were definitely related to Guybrush's design, so we'll have to see what the response is to that. The rationale on the filepage is where I think its going to fall down, I just never got my head around how to do those effectively in these situations. I really don't want to lose the last image that shows development in progress/concept art, I always think that's a valuable addition to these sorts of articles so I really want it to work out. I'd hate to have to sacrifice it to to the non-free machine for the sake of a bronze star in the article corner, but I guess I'll have to if Jappalang disagrees. -- Sabre (talk) 17:41, 23 January 2011 (UTC)
Sounds like fun. I recently noticed that there was a push to get this Featured; I'd be glad to help you guys reach that goal. I'll start in on it later today. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 21:33, 25 January 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. However, it looks like I really will be able to start tomorrow, as I just finished Flow. I assume PresN will send it to FAC in the next few days; hopefully, no major 1a conerns will arise.
Also, I really hate to ask you for a favor—particularly because I haven't started on the one you asked of me—but I need the help. I've been working on Flight Unlimited recently, giving it a more-or-less proper lead, and a half-finished Development section. However, Reception material is scarce, and I haven't been able to access three of the sources I'll need for that section. I plan to take the article to FAC in the next few months, once it's actually finished, so I'll need all the material I can get. If you have time, it'd be great if you could use your databases to look for this, this, and this. Sorry to ask, since I know you're busy. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 10:53, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
Making my way through the article. I usually do a two-pass copyedit; the first deals with obvious problems, while the second corrects any mistakes I missed—or made. However, the article's writing is clean enough that I don't believe a second pass will be necessary. Because of this, I'll almost surely be finished within the week. You shouldn't have much trouble at FAC; it seems like a solid piece of work. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 10:33, 29 January 2011 (UTC)
Scratch the above. Unfortunately, after digging further into the Gameplay section, I believe that a second pass will be needed to smooth out the rough edges. That'll probably extend the time to around two weeks; I hope that isn't a problem. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 00:49, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
Nearing completion of the first pass. Sorry it's taking so long; I've got a lot on my plate right now. I should be finished with the Reception section in the next day or two, after which I will begin the second pass. That should go pretty quickly, as I'm pretty sure I cleared up most of the issues already. After that, feel free to nominate it whenever you have time. And, when you get the chance, it'd really help me out if you could look up those three sources I mentioned above. It's been hard to find reliable material for Flight Unlimited's Reception section. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 19:12, 6 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks. Also, I'll try to finish the first pass today, and begin the second tomorrow. Now that I've read the whole thing (while copyediting, I traditionally only read an article as far as I've worked), I can safely say that it's solid FAC material. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 17:42, 8 February 2011 (UTC)
I'll see what I can get out of these; some of it looked pretty promising. Thanks. If you can't find the Computer Shopper stuff, I'll use the Highbeam free trial if it's still around, and try to save all of the Looking Glass-related material I can in one fell swoop. I've been trying to avoid doing that until it was absolutely necessary, as I only have one shot to get all of it; it seems, however, that it might finally be "absolutely necessary". That Newsday review, though, doesn't seem to be available anywhere, which is a shame. If you can't find it, I may have to resort to buying it from their archives; otherwise, I probably won't have enough Reception material to pass FAC. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 17:44, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
Second pass complete. There was a lot less to fix than I expected; it was almost not necessary. Feel free to ship it off to FAC whenever you're ready. Hopefully, there won't be any 1a concerns. JimmyBlackwing (talk) 19:44, 14 February 2011 (UTC)
Up, up, and away! A new task force was started this month for editors interested in contributing to films based on comic books. Comic fans are needed to help improve some of the project's most viewed articles, especially with the many upcoming comic book films. If you've been bit by a radioactive spider, spend a lot of time in a cave below your mansion, or enjoy carrying a hammer, head over to the project page to sign up.
After a lengthy discussion regarding the additions of unsourced lists covering the differences between novels and their film adaptations, an RfC has been opened. You are invited to comment on the best way to incorporate these sections into film articles. Another RfC is open regarding the use of non-free images in character articles as well.
Bovineboy2008 has initiated a project to help improve the films nominated for the upcoming Academy Awards. As these articles will and are being viewed by large numbers of viewers, consider helping out improving Wikipedia's coverage of these recognized films.
Our project currently has over 81,600 film-related articles, with over four hundred unassessed articles, thanks to the assessment department!
Based on views, the top five most popular articles from our project this month were: Black Swan, Inception, The King's Speech, The Social Network, and 127 Hours (all have been nominated by various award organizations). For a list of our project's top 1,000 most popular articles, see here. Consider helping to improve one of these articles that is seen by thousands to millions of people each month.
Latter Days, one of the project's older FAs has been nominated for FAR. Additional assistance is needed to resolve issues raised by reviewers.
Spotlight Update: Multiple films and film-related articles have reached GA and FA status in January 2011.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture is a 1979 American science fiction film released by Paramount Pictures. It is the first film based on the Star Trek television series. When a mysterious and immensely powerful alien cloud called V'Ger approaches Earth, destroying everything in its path, Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) assumes command of his old starship—the USS Enterprise—to lead it on a mission to save the planet and determine V'Ger's origins. When the original television series was cancelled in 1969, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry lobbied Paramount to continue the franchise through a film. Paramount instead planned on returning the franchise to its roots with a new television series, Star Trek: Phase II. The box office success of Close Encounters of the Third Kind convinced Paramount that science fiction films other than Star Wars could do well at the box office, so the studio canceled production of Phase II and resumed its attempts at making a Star Trek film. With the cancellation of the new television series, the writers rushed to adapt the planned pilot episode of Phase II, "In Thy Image," into a film script. Released in North America on December 7, 1979, Star Trek: The Motion Picture received mixed reviews from critics, many of whom criticized the film for its lack of action and over-reliance on special effects. The film earned $139 million worldwide, falling short of studio expectations but enough for Paramount to propose a cheaper sequel. Roddenberry was forced out of creative control for Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. (more...)
Hey David,
Since you're an editor I have a great deal of respect for and I know that you're reasonable, I thought I might ask you about your earlier Wikipedia experiences.
You see, I recently archived my talk page and I caught some criticisms of me during my first three years of Wikipedia that I found pretty sharp and disenchanting. I suppose it kind of shook me a little. Since you're one of the top contributors for Wikipedia, I thought I might ask you, did you have troubles like this earlier in your Wikipedia career? I mean, only in the last year have I gotten very serious about Wikipedia and contributed top-quality material, but the earlier days were rough. So, can you relate somewhat? What did you mean by "you could probably get away with a slightly larger image"? [4] Do you mean using 'frame' instead of 'thumb'? « ₣M₣ » 01:01, 9 February 2011 (UTC)
I've upload a larger version, but I cannot get rid of those fragments when viewed from the article. What the hell is with Wiki's software... I think I'm done trying lol « ₣M₣ » 20:02, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
I feel a little stupid asking this question, but... On your User page you say that if someone wants to talk privately to you, to send you an email. Are you referring to some sort of wiki-email I am not familiar with? Or are you referring to normal, run-of-the-mill internet email through a regular ISP (Internet Service Provider)? If it is the latter, where does one find your email address. Sorry to bother you with such trivial questions, but I have a feeling you can be a good resource for simple technical questions in this domain... Thank you, warshytalk20:32, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
Now I see it. But this option appears only in the User's talk page, not on the main page. That's what threw me off here, I think. Now I will play a little with my own and learn how it works. Thanks a lot. warshytalk20:59, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
Well, here comes the next question then, if you'll humor me... I don't see this option on my own talk page. Do you see it there? If not, how do you set it up for other people to be able to contact you through email, if they want? Thanks a lot. warshytalk21:02, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
In your preferences under the "user profile" tab you will see an option to associate an email address with your account. Protonk (talk) 21:11, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
My option "enable email from other users" in my profile is checked, as well as the other two. That is why asked if you can see the option to email me on my talk page, since I can't? Thanks for humoring me... Do you regularly follow pages of other users and also answer for them? Just curious, trying to learn the environment as much as I can... Thanks. warshytalk21:16, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
Hey Warshy, yes I can see the email user link on your talk page. I didn't realize it didn't appear on the user page itself. Protonk's what we call a "talk page stalker", just someone who happens to have another person's user talk page on their watchlist. They're very helpful at answering questions before the user in question usually does :) Thanks, P. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk)22:18, 10 February 2011 (UTC)
Thanks David and Protonk for humoring me and answering my questions and explaining to me. I really found your User page very informative, David, so let me explore around a bit some new stuff I learned there, and I may be back later with some more technical questions. Thanks a lot again in the meantime. warshytalk00:25, 11 February 2011 (UTC)
Formal mediation has been requested
Formal mediation of the dispute relating to Role-playing video game has been requested. As an editor concerned in this dispute, you are invited to participate in the mediation. The process of mediation is voluntary and focuses exclusively on the content issues over which there is disagreement. For more information on other available steps in the dispute resolution process, see Wikipedia:Dispute resolution.
A strong oppose from me the first time around? To be wiki-young again. Ah, the nostalgia. Anyway, kudos for continue to churn out content even with the notoriously time-killing ArbCom duties. I was afraid I'd seen the last of your FAs for a while. --Andy Walsh(talk)17:19, 15 February 2011 (UTC)
Hello, David. I just put Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows through an FAC and the one thing the reviewers agreed on is that the article didn't pass criterion 1a of the FA criteria. Since you have written many Featured articles (including one of the best film FAs, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan), I think that a good copy edit from someone like you could pass the article. Thanks, Guy546(Talk)01:21, 17 February 2011 (UTC)
Hi David, just got back from a long break and see that you are now on arb. Congrats!!!! Thanks for volunteering for such an .... icky .... duty :) Karanacs (talk) 19:49, 21 February 2011 (UTC)
WikiProject Good Articles will be running a GAN backlog elimination drive for the entire month of March. The goal of this drive is to bring the number of outstanding Good Article nominations down to below 50. This will help editors in restoring confidence to the GAN process as well as actively improving, polishing, and rewarding good content. If you are interested in participating in the drive, please place your name here. Awards will be given out to those who review certain numbers of GANs as well as to those who review the most. On behalf of my co-coordinator Wizardman, we hope we can see you in March. MuZemike delivered by MuZebot00:28, 22 February 2011 (UTC)
If you watch a bit (just a little bit) closely, you will see that Pilot (House) is not a standalone article, since it is part of a TV show. Therefore, you can see that the other episodes from season 1 and onwards do have the complete Template:Infobox House (TV series) season 1 episode list and so, why suppress the list?... It is an action completely not uniform to the rest of the episodes and seasons.
I know, with many people editing, it is a bit difficult to set new standards. But I do care about things/articles following some uniform rules.
Hi, David. I started work on Lawrence of Arabia (film) in hopes of getting it to Featured Article status by the film's 50th anniversary. I know that you prefer to cite a secondary source for the plot summaries of the Star Trek films, and I took a similar approach with Lawrence of Arabia, using a synopsis published online by the British Film Institute. I was reverted, though, and I started discussion on the talk page as seen here. Are my points similar to yours in using such sources for the summaries? Are there any other policies or guidelines that I can mention? I just think that the film's current plot summary is a little too creative for a description of the primary source. Me and Juliet
I'm a bit puzzled by one of your edits. I tried to refine the Hammerstein/Rodgers dynamic which caused them to do the play, and removed your hidden comment. Did I misunderstand what you meant? Perhaps it would be best if you explained it a bit more, as you restored the hidden comment. Many thanks for the review.--Wehwalt (talk) 19:19, 27 February 2011 (UTC)
Halo: Reach Article
David,
I agree with you that a plot is meant to summarize the story. However, because Halo:Reach is character-driven and focuses solely on Noble Team at the time of Reach's invasion, I think the deaths of the members of Noble should be elaborated.
I noticed that you had refrained from voting on the Rodhullandemu motion, but have since commented on WT:ACN about it. Might I ask why? Was it simply a time issue, or something else? NW(Talk)15:35, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
Oversight on my part; I voted for one proposal but not the other that ended up passing. Regardless, I still agree with the Committee's decision as a whole. We had good reason to approach it as we did, although the fallout has suggested we should improve some aspects of our method. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk)16:22, 28 February 2011 (UTC)
Wikimania 2012 bid, DC chapter & next meetup!
AtWikiXDC in January, User:Harej proposed that DC submit a bid to host Wikimania 2012. A bid and organizing committee is being formed and seeks additional volunteers to help. Please look at our bid page and sign up if you want to help out. You can also signup for the bid team's email list.
To support the Wikimania bid, more events like WikiXDC, and outreach activities like collaborations with the Smithsonian (ongoing) and National Archives, there also has been discussion of forming Wikimedia DC, as an official Wikimedia chapter. You can express interest and contribute to chapter discussions on the Wikimedia DC Meta-Wiki pages.
To discuss all this and meet up with special guest, Dutch Wikipedian User:Kim Bruning, there will be a meetup, Wikipedia:Meetup/DC 16 this Tuesday at 7pm, at Capitol City Brewery, Metro Center. There will be a pre-meetup Wikimania team meeting at 6pm at the same location.
Apologies for the short notice for this meetup, but let's discuss when, where & what for DC Meetup #17. Also, if you haven't yet, please join wikimedia-dc mailing list to stay informed. Cheers, User:Aude (talk)

Project news
With the conclusion of the 83rd Academy Awards and multiple other award shows, consider helping to further improve the articles nominated for the various accolades. Many have access to a large number of sources that can help push the articles to GAs. In addition, FLs can be developed for lists of accolades, especially since the majority of the awards and nominations have been announced. A listing of articles nominated for Academy Awards may be a good starting point.
Per a recent discussion and poll, the "Preceded by/Followed by" parameters of the {{Infobox film}} template have been removed. All existing uses in articles will no longer be visible. Add the template talk page to your watchlist for future discussions on modifying the template.
Our project currently has over 82,200 film-related articles, with over one hundred and fifty unassessed articles, thanks to the assessment department! If you've just joined, add your name to the Participants section of Wikipedia:WikiProject Film. You'll get a mention in the next issue of the Newsletter and get it delivered as desired. Also, please include your own promotions and awards in future issues. Don't be shy!
Lastly, this is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue (Issue 3 – March 2011). Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned, or just start editing!
Miss me? Hope all is well! Changing jobs, fiancees, houses, and other things kept me away from Wikipedia for a while, but I have been observing all this time. Great work on the Star Trek films! I wanted to run something by you, since you have done such amazing work on the Halo series, I wanted to propose that, if Factions of Halo was a GA, you could put the last two Halo Topics up for Good Topic, so every article in the projects jurisdiction would be in a good or Featured Topic! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Halo/possible_FTs#Potential.2Fin_progress_topics Thoughts? Thank you for all your hard work. May you wear the crowns well, and may the gamepad crown motivate you to press on with more outstanding articles. – SMasters (talk) 09:11, 4 March 2011 (UTC)
