Hello, welcome to Wikipedia. Here's some tips:

  • You can sign your name using three tildes, like ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too.
  • Remember to use the show preview button before you save a page.
  • If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page.
  • Other useful pages are: how to edit, how to write a great article, naming conventions, manual of style and the Wikipedia policies.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian!Angela. 22:32, Apr 12, 2004 (UTC)

Tawkerbot2 and the reversion of your edit(s)

    [edit]

Hello, Ehn. You may have noticed User:Tawkerbot2 reverted one or more of your edits and perhaps left a message on your talk page. Wikipedia recently experienced a database malfunction, causing Tawkerbot2 to misidentify legitimate edits; hence the reversion of your edit(s) and the message. The bot has been temporarily disabled until the problems are rectified. Thanks. —Wayward Talk 18:49, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    I noticed. :) I have since restored the reverted changes. Ehn 19:49, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    Hi,

You may have an interest, since I saw your name in the history list of the Bow tie article: There's a separate article, List of bow tie wearers and an admin is suggesting deleting it. When I looked into the Bow tie page, I found there's already a list there. I don't have an opinion on which list should remain, but one really should go. I'd appreciate your advice on the Talk:Bow tie page, if you're interested and have the time.Noroton 00:56, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    Whitespace after intro para

    [edit]

Ehn, I routinely add a whitespace after intro paras when there are sections, because I loathe the look of the TOC butted right up against the text. It's ugly. If the TOC code could be fixed to include a space before the box, I could stop adding the whitespaces.

I think we have a lot of coders here, but few interface designers :) Zora 21:52, 27 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think adding whitespace manually to get the layout just right is bad practice, because it assumes that the page will look the same to everyone, that everyone is using the same style sheet etc, which is why I tend to remove such whitespace when I see it. It's the only way to get a consistent look throughout Wikipedia—you can't add the extra whitespace to every article, can you? Instead, if you want a different layout, change your stylesheet and campaign to get the default one changed accordingly. Ehn 16:22, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    Orphaned non-free media (Image:Zyvex-logo.png)

    [edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Zyvex-logo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:24, 24 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently the Zyvex article has been deleted. I'm trying to get it restored. Please refrain from deleting the logo meanwhile! ehn (talk) 23:27, 25 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Having looked at the edit history of the deleted version, I'd say you're better off creating a new version from scratch, with solid sourcing, etc. It's been problematic almost from the beginning, and I'm not sure it ever met our standards of corporate notability (the article from Wired, for example, gave it only a paragraph or two mention.) --Orange Mike | Talk 22:58, 26 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you'll find quite a few references to the company with a simple Google News search. It's quite notable in its domain, though arguably less so outside of it. ehn (talk) 13:10, 27 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

    [edit]

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and you will still be able to manually mark your edits as being minor in the usual way.

For established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. With the script in place, you can continue with this functionality indefinitely (its use is governed by WP:MINOR). If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Thank you for your understanding and happy editing :) Editing on behalf of User:Jarry1250, LivingBot (talk) 18:46, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute to Wikipedia, introducing inappropriate pages, such as Aesop (skin care), is not in accordance with our policies. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. That's an outdated logo. Unless someone wants to make the case for a section about historic Tradedoubler logos, there is no use for the image on Wikipedia anymore. ehn (talk) 23:37, 4 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

    Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. FPP

    [edit]

Hi Ehn, I reverted your second edit to FPP because each entry needs a blue link (since disambiguation pages are essentially navigation aids) and I couldn't find one for 'Financial position and prospects'. Leschnei (talk) 13:27, 30 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

What you say makes sense if you view disambiguation pages purely as navigation aids. I haven't thought of it that way and have frequently found it useful to have terms defined even if they don't have an article of their own. Similarly, I often find red links on disambiguation pages. Would that also not be ok? Is there a reference to this rule? ehn (talk) 13:33, 30 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I guess this may qualify to support your point. What would be a good way to solve the problem at hand instead? ehn (talk) 13:44, 30 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Notice

The file File:Rendering bug in Chrome for Template Infobox European Union agency - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.png has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Unused, unlinked wikipedia screenshot. No obvious use.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. --Minorax«¦talk¦» 14:02, 6 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
