Hi! Is saw this edit. Perhaps the name should not be stated as such officially, but it is important for an English speaker to know how to say "Algeria" in French since French has de facto an important status in Algeria even though French is not an official language

It is true that the people living in Algeria are Arabs and Berbers, but they still use a European language significantly. I did research on the issue and summarized things at French language in Algeria. The Algerian people have adopted French as a significant language in business and science, as well as university level education. The CIA World Factbook notes that French is not an official language but it's still important. WhisperToMe (talk) 14:31, 5 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The languages included in the article are those that are often most relevant to that particular country. In Algeria far more people know French than English, and French has a position within the business and government hierarchy that English doesn't have. We notice that in one way: the national airline is Air Algérie. It's important for an English speaker to know about the French language terminology used in Algeria, such as what the country is called in French.

I am aware that Arabic has a long history in the math and science field, especially during the "Islamic Golden Age". What has happened today is that European languages have taken over the discourse on science and math. One example: while European (English, French, Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch, Swedish, Norwegian, Portuguese, and Russian) and East Asian (Japanese, Korean, Chinese) languages, as well as Turkish, have been used in writing original copies of airliner crash investigative reports, I have never seen one written in Arabic.

• Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia would write the original in French and have English translations made: The report for Air Algérie Flight 6289 is available in French and in English
• Libya, Egypt, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, UAE, and Bahrain have their reports written in English, with no translations in Arabic available

Germany has German as the most prominent though it does list all of the recognized minority languages and what Germany is called in those languages.

Language politics can get very interesting in some places. India is officially bilingual in Hindi and English because those in South India don't want to be dominated by a north Indian language. Nigeria and many other sub-Saharan African countries have to use a European language as that's "neutral" between the ethnic groups.

The reason why English is still official in India is because the people in South India protested when there were plans to make Hindi the only official language.

Nigeria does have multiple languages: Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa are the biggest while there are many others. Even though English is the only official language of the Nigerian federal government the Nigeria article does list the names of Nigeria in Igbo, Yoruba, and Hausa.

Modern Standard Arabic is used uniformly throughout the Arab League. BTW I found out Algerian Arabic has a test wiki. What may complicate things is that there may be no standard way to write Algerian Arabic (as it's usually spoken).

Africa currently has over 37,000 stubs and badly needs a quality improvement editathon/contest to flesh out basic stubs. There are proposed substantial prizes to give to editors who do the most geography, wildlife and women articles, and planned smaller prizes for doing to most destubs for each of the 53 African countries, so should be enjoyable! Even if contests aren't your thing we would be grateful if you could consider destubbing a few African articles during the drive to help the cause and help reduce the massive 37,000 + stub count, of which many are rated high importance (think Regions of countries etc). If you're interested in competing or just loosely contributing, whether it's a river in Malawi, a Nigerian footballer, or a South African civil rights activist, please add your name to the Contestants/participants section.
