Thank you for your recent welcome, Jmcw37. I removed the Wikipedia citations from the Karate article because it is my understanding that Wikipedia articles should not be used as references. I appreciate the comment about the edit wars; hopefully that kind of behaviour will be minimised once the Karate article is thoroughly revised and appropriately documented with regard to sources. Good work on the PEK article. As David.Mestel said on the talk page 12 months ago, "it is bristling with POV". Extracting the POV into the "critic" section is a good move. (I wish I'd thought of doing that!)

Normally I would have left it on the kendo article, it but had already been removed and had also been added to others where the relevance was questionable, external link on kendo are not needed on Japanese martial artsorSport in Japan where it was also added. --Nate1481(t/c) 11:30, 7 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi John. Yeah, there's a problem here. As far as I can tell, 東恩流 should be pronounced とうおんりゅう, which (using revised Hepburn) transliterates to Tōonryū. Revised Hepburn provides no rules for the use of hyphens, they are to be used at the writer's discretion to improve clarity where needed (but used sparingly). In the WP:WPMA, we've decided that a hyphen should always precede "ryū", so that brings the transliteration to Tōon-ryū. However, revised Hepburn does provide for the use of an apostrophe, and in only a single application, which is when ん is followed by a vowel or "y". An apostrophe is not used to separate syllables (although a hyphen could be), so you're left with either Tōon-ryū, or Tō-on-ryū. I prefer the former. Hope that helps, Bradford44 12:19, 2 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks - I'll rename the article. jmcw 09:01, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for participating in my RfA! | |
Although it failed 43/27/0, I'm happy because the outcome has been very helpful in many meaningful ways. Your support and remarks contributed so much to this. If you followed my RfA you know what happened. Most of the editors who posted opposing opinions have never edited with me. Some articles I edit deal with controversial topics and with respect to a very few of these, editors who didn't know much about me had some worries about confrontational editing and civility. Since I support their high standards I can easily (and will gladly) address this. The support and ecouragement to run again soon has been wonderful, thanks again. Cheers! Hi, yes, if you look at the discussion page it is pretty well understood that simply putting cheese on bread and toasting it does not constitute a Welsh rarebit. That should go under a separate article for cheese on toast. Furthermore saying that this method is "in current popular use" is very confusing and misleading, especially referring to the use of the name in the US. It's a sauce, not a piece of cheese on bread.OwenSaunders (talk) 14:49, 21 April 2008 (UTC)

If you intended for Senso Ryū Aikijūjutsu to be speedy-deleted as blatant copyright infringement, please provide a URL with the speedy deletion tag. I Googled several passages from the article to see if I could turn up the infringement, and I was unsuccessful, so I declined the speedy. SchuminWeb (Talk) 11:00, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the message - the speedy tag has been removed here, and I am inclined to agree with SchuminWeb that the url is probably a copy of Wikipedia (the formatting gives it away) rather than the other way around. Incidentally, I don't know if you're aware, but when using db-copyvio there's an additional parameter ("url=XXX") that you can use to show the url - if you have a look at the page when you placed the tag here, you'll see the url field of the db box is empty. If you'd typed in {{db-copyvio|url=http://sensoryuaikibudo.yuku.com/topic/577}} it would have shown the infringing url on the page, rather than having it hidden away in the edit summary. Just a thought! GBT/C 11:45, 27 May 2008 (UTC)
I think that the date you are referring to re the copyvio by User:99.132.177.200 is not the article date - it's the join date of that editor. The article date is at the bottom of the page. I posted a message to that user re breach of GFDLatUser talk:99.132.177.200 instead. It's a copyvio either way! -- David from Downunder (talk) 13:18, 27 May 2008 (UTC)

You reversed my edit on the aikido page. After many years of practice I have always found that people call him O-sensei. I see your point about editing a reference. I hadn't noticed that it was a reference. It seems to reference some encyclopedia. An encyclopedia is often put together by non-experts, and as such is often quantatively correct, but often qualatively incorrect. You undid my edit, and so that implied you disagree. How would you suggest I correct this piece of incorrect information? The phrase "some aikidoka call him O-sensei" is incorrect and the phrase "most aikidoka call him O-sensei" is correct (I'm sure you'll agree). Should I delete the reference? I would appreciate your thoughts. Declan Davis (talk) 13:23, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

As you were fundamental in the instigation of it, I feel the need to tell you a story which I, personally, find rather bemusing.
As you would no-doubt guess, I have Foster's Lager on my watchlist. Hence, I noticed your edit.

As you may (or may not) know, I get quickly irritated by this stupid wiki-lack-of-system where vandals get seemingly unlimited "final" warnings, yet nothing happens. So, I did this, this and this.

There don't seem to be many sources available on Ryu-te. I asked my instructor, and the only ones he mentioned are the ones already cited on the page. I am sure you remember a while ago when you made this proposal and got booed down - especially by me. However, I'd like to start working towards that. There are a few more sources now, so maybe it is realistic. I wonder if you wouldn't be willing to look at the citations and suggesting which ones might be usable.
I would also like to ask what can be done about the (multiple) court cases. Obviously they did happen; however, what would be need to be done in order to allow them to be used? Is there any way to upload them in an electronic format? For example, could something like Wikisource be used to upload documents? Would they be considered reliable if I uploaded them?

Just shows I spend WAY to much time here :) --Nate1481 12:54, 23 April 2009 (UTC)
Well, it's Autumn here, so I can't justify using the "Spring Fever" explanation.
Wasn't it someone like P T Barnum who said something like "you'll never go broke overestimating the stupidity of the general public?" - (I must track that down.) - It seems highly appropriate for your current experiences.
As for this, I am indebted to you for flaging it - without your help, it would have passed me by unnoticed. My first reaction was: "O.M.G. Get a life!". Then I realised the complete inappropriateness of that phrase in these circumstances! (Never-the-less, that still amused me.) I'm afraid I'm left speechless for an appropriate response. (The best I can come up with include: "Some people have FAR too much spare time". OMG Get a life! (No, we discarded that one.) "And I thought that I was a 'details' person!".)
Ho hum. What did I say last conversation? "Life is strange. Wikilife is weird!"
Anyway, I think I am doing well, thanks. I've decided to become excessively polite and non-agressive (but remain persistent), and instead of getting abuse, the agressive just give up, and the reasonable become supportive (and sometimes even apologetic.) Example: "Sorry if I came across as flippant or dismissive. You seem like a reasonable person. I'm just used to people taking it personally and becoming abusive, and I was bracing myself for a personal attack (that never came)."
Ho hum. Remind me please John, why do I spend so much time on WP? Best wishes!! Pdfpdf (talk) 14:06, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Hi. You removed Prof. Peggy Demers 3 times from the list of virtuosi. The first time, there was a link to her faculty page at Sam Houston University. http://music.shsu.edu/faculty/demers.php It does not specifically mention alphorn, but when combined with other publicly-available information, it shows her to be a professional horn player and alphorn specialist (see below).
The second was a link to a nonprofit music site featuring her as an alphorn instructor. This was removed as advertising. http://www.einprosit.us/Midwest%20Alphorn%20Retreat%202009.htm (Just out of curiosity, why is this link objectionable as advertising instead of acceptable as education?)
Finally, a naked entry listing her name only was removed as not having sufficient support.
Peggy does show up in Google searches. Here's a page from Prof. Douglas Hill, horn prof, U Wisconsin listing Peggy as an "alphorn specialist" - http://www.music.wisc.edu/media/HillHornDept.pdf
Here's a mention of her doctoral thesis: DeMers, Peggy A. “Orchestra Imitation of the Alphorn from Haydn to Mahler” and Alphorn choir. “Alphorn Ensemble music written for 4-8 Alphorns.,” International Horn Society, University of Michigan, Kalamazoo, Michigan, June 2001. https://www.shsu.edu/faculty/research/01/artscipaper.html

Good evening. I wanted to let you know that I responded to some of your recent edits to the Kokondo page. I would like us to work together to address some of the issues with acceptable, yet reasonable, references. Most of the statements referring to Japan's push of Karate in Korea are by individual not speaking for any Taekwondo organization and speaking for themselves in an interview. Odd that this would be left alone by you.
Anyways, I added the other material which were also history books that were used. Such as the book "Korean impact on Japanese culture: Japan's hidden History" and Boots book itself. You should also read the book "Paekche of Korea and the origin of Yamato Japan." These are all very detailed books, but it explains many of the mystery centuries of Japan and explains the timelines that do not make sense in many of Japans beliefs. It also wonders why Japan still teaches this stuff as fact when the timelines make it impossible. I'll have some other books to recommend to you but I have to go, talk to you later. --Objectiveye (talk) 20:16, 23 December 2009 (UTC)

I just thought you should know, after some research, I found some interesting information, and as you are involved, I want to make sure that you know, just in case my reply is deleted by the blockee or some other user. Here is my reply. Yak was the one that added the copyrighted line, not other users as they belay. I shall be posting this message to all involved users.— Dædαlus Contribs 02:17, 21 January 2010 (UTC)
I have tools installed to quickly revert vandalism and still had your talk page on my watch list and my laptop is rather touch sensitive and accidently reverted an addition to your talk page. I quickly undid the revert so no harm done, just if you are wondering. :)--Literaturegeek | T@1k? 02:31, 21 January 2010 (UTC)
"I think the people here now understand quantity .ne. quality." - Actually John, I disgree with you on that. But I don't want the matter to any further divert the conversation from the subject in hand. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 01:32, 12 February 2010 (UTC)
A significant number of admins did not pass RfA at the first attempt - take a look: Wikipedia:Successful_requests_for_adminship/2009. One of the things that people look for in an admin is good judgement. And being able to judge that a RfA is not going to succeed, and therefore withdrawing the nomination, is something that has stood previous admins in good stead. The decision is yours, but I would recommend withdrawing with a short statement thanking people for their input. SilkTork * YES! 15:24, 12 February 2010 (UTC)
I like what I saw in you at your RfA, and I am sure that if you take the praise given in the supports and the feedback from the opposes to heart you will become an admin. My advice to you is to give it 3-6 months before trying again and to take the feedback given from the opposes as WP:AGF. We need more admins and I hope someday to see you wielding the mop. -- RP459 Talk/Contributions 16:22, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your note on removing a tag from Shotokan of England Karate Union. I take your point. I thought that enough expansion had happened since it was tagged to justify this. I find it very frustrating that web searches turn up nothing in the way of newspaper articles on what is a large and high quality organisation in Britain. I know this from personal experience as I have a gold medal for kata that I won at one of SEKU's annual open tournaments down south in Portsmouth some years ago.--Ninja Shewolf (talk) 14:08, 14 February 2010 (UTC)
I know you're looking at me as a big deletionist and it's true that I tend to vote delete more than keep. But I've also saved articles that were up for AfD and ones that were pending it. And much of my time over the past few weeks have been spent saving an article that was a train wreck (Aircraft in fiction). Shortly after we started cleaning it up, it was nominated for deletion. It was a single sentence leade and little more than a list of poorly sourced or completely unsourced entries about Transformers and Gobots. It's a work in progress, but I'd say now it is hugely improved and actually informative. We bought some time I also have the very first "easter egg" awarded from the incubator project for the first article to go through their saving process. I'm working on an unsourced MA article right now (Wen-Do) that is unsourced and, upon first reading sounds like an ad. But when I started searching, I found some good sources. Everything isn't always what it looks like on the surface. Niteshift36 (talk) 14:31, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
In the Tactical Hapkido related articles.....the main editor is User:Tmartialaa. One of the school links he added is: tmartialaa.com. Coincidence? LOL. Niteshift36 (talk)
Thanks for your note, jmcw; I appreciate it. While I am writing to you, I would like to applaud your constructive work in WPMA recently. If you feel like doing some critical review or collaborative work, please feel welcome to take a look at some of the karate articles I've been working on recently. I would value your input if you have the time and inclination. Thanks. Janggeom (talk) 02:24, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
Mostly, yes, I waited. Those 2 were just such blatant no-brainers that I couldn't resist. Sorry. Niteshift36 (talk) 00:30, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
Please be sure the article is about a living person when tagging with {{unreferencedBLP}}. In this case, the article was clearly not about a living person as it included a death date on the first line (in the first sentence, in fact) and was not in the Category:Living people. Thank you very much for your help. If I can help and improve some other articles, please let me know. Best regards. Simone Nicolescot (talk) 23:50, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
Could you please help again with Unifight section ? I do not understand what happend, another user put some tags on this section, like: {{multiple issues|article=yes|tone=March 2010|refimprove=March 2010|wikify=March 2010|prose = March 2010}} {{POV-check|date=March 2010}} It is the second time that Nate1481 put this tags. The firs time, I just undo and wrote him that notability has already be verified, but he put this tags again. This is not an advert, I try to be neutral in description. Please, check again and eventually remove this tags if, as I think, is everithing all right. Thank you very much, --Simone Nicolescot (talk) 13:00, 23 March 2010 (UTC)
I wrote to Nate1481 the following message and remove tags from Unifight section :
Hello, you put some tags on Unifight section, like :
This article has multiple issues. Please help improve the article or discuss these issues on the talk page.
* It needs additional references or sources for verification. Tagged since March 2010. * It is in a list format that may be better presented using prose. Tagged since March 2010. * Its tone or style may not be appropriate for Wikipedia. Tagged since March 2010. * It may need to be wikified to meet Wikipedia's quality standards. Tagged since March 2010.

This article has been nominated to be checked for its neutrality. Discussion of this nomination can be found on the talk page. (March 2010)
I will, once again, remove this tags. It is a neutral description, not an advert at all. I am not agree to see this tags on this page, and I am available for dicussion on the discussion page, but not to see this tags without any explanation and discussion. At least, explain please the problem, I do not understand what exactely you do not agree. Please, if you want to improve you are welcome, but don′t put any tags without a discussion. Of course I am upsat, it was a lot of work for me to write this article in english. I speak french usually. Ok, I will let for the moment the tags about sources, style and others, but I already remove the tag for neutrality.
Please, belive me, I am surely the most informed person in unifight subject on Wikipedia, and I am curious if someone else will find other sources about this subject. We can not find other sources because they not exist still, unifight is very young.
Please, could you see what other styl problems had unifight section ? If you can help me, I will be grateful.
Thank you,

I, Nate, hereby award Jmcw37/Archive 1 the The Martial Arts Barnstar for valued contributions to WikiProject Martial Arts. Especially for acting as secretary to the Article Review Drive and keeping the whole thing going! |
I concur with Nate; thank you for your contributions in the Article Review, which have helped improve Wikipedia significantly. Janggeom (talk) 15:27, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
Is there a Black Belt for the Martial Arts Barnstar? If so, I nominate JMCW for the award. I marked up the Moni Aizik article with lots of citation needed, verification needed, dead link tags and JMCW has come through to clean out the problems. I feel like a WWE Tag team star! Thank you, JMCW, for jumping into the ring -- I mean dojo -- to clean out the opposition. --S. Rich (talk) 23:48, 16 February 2011 (UTC)
Hi Jmcw37.
You've been reverting my edits to Oom Yung Doe without discussing the reversion. You keep claiming that the issue has been discussed on the talk page, but the extent of the discussion on the talk page has been me repeatedly asking for discussion (and a short note from you two months ago explaining that the section is reliably sourced, which is correct but not sufficient to include it in the article). Even if you do believe (for example) that any reliably sourced material which is at all related to the article subject should be included without discussion, good faith would be well served by you explaining your reasoning on the talk page instead of just repeatedly reverting.
I'm planning to report this to WP:ANEW if you keep reverting without discussion. Please read Edit_war#What_edit_warring_is: "Faced with disagreement, editors should discuss rather than fight. They should calmly seek third party input if the matter cannot be resolved, and should accept they cannot agree and seek dispute resolution rather than disrupt the article with edits they already know will be opposed."
Subverdor (talk) 03:25, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
I don't see how Robert Ludden is related to the notability of Oom Yung Doe or its founder. Does your response on my talk page mean that you're planning to continue reverting without discussion my edits to the Robert Ludden section, or no?
Subverdor (talk) 13:00, 15 April 2010 (UTC)
Hello again. There's been no new discussion, so I'm removing the section again. Once again, as required by WP policy, please discuss rather than simply reverting this time.

For, regardless of the outcome, taking the time and effort to try to make peace between other users. It might be surprising to some, until they think about it for awhile, that a student of the martial arts such as yourself believes in and practices peacemaking, but no one knows the value of peace more than one who has learned to be a warrior. Many thanks, TRANSPORTERMAN (TALK) 14:19, 26 April 2010 (UTC) |
An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is John McSweeney (martial artist). We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").
Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/John McSweeney (martial artist) (2nd nomination). Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).
You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.
Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:03, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
Hello Jmcw37, I noticed that you asked Gwen Gale to grant me the rollback privilege; I was not expecting this, but thank you for your nomination. I will certainly try to make use of it to help keep things in good order. Janggeom (talk) 14:54, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Hello Jmcw37, I saw your comment on Kenyu Chinen in the WPMA deletion sorting list. I appreciate your sentiment, but I am unclear as to whether you were just making a general comment or if you were expressing the desire that the article might be kept. I started the article on Teruo Chinen a couple of months ago (presumably the two masters are related) and, while I did recommend submitting Kenyu Chinen's article for AfD, I would be willing to help you try to improve it if you (a subject expert) think he has enough 'real life' notability to warrant it. Janggeom (talk) 13:29, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
The essay you quoted on notability seems to be for articles existence only, and has nothing to do with categories. Is this the essay you've based all your category removals on? Nymf hideliho! 11:43, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
Laura Schlessinger clearly has sourced on her article from Newsweek [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laura_Schlessinger#cite_note-19 ] she is a black belt in Karate so why remove her from Category:American karateka Dwanyewest (talk) 07:12, 10 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi There,
Just wondering what I need to do to kept NZ king Salmon from being deleted. I have read all the relevant sections and belive the article complies. It is diffiantly not advertising, its too dry, unbias and factual to be that. Also, NZ King Salmon, being the majority producer of farmed king salmon in the World is important enough to be on Wiki.
So, your help would be mcuh appreciated.

Hey Bro!
Replied on my talk page and updated the Sikaran page with stuff additional stuff I found around the net. I'm from the Philippines and my college friend played Sikaran. Having seen a bit of Tae Kwon Do and Karate, I found the stuff he did a little different and weird.
Found a Brit Fight Quest-type reality show Last Man Standing (UK TV series) on Youtube with the Sikaran episode and added it to the references. You'll see that the stuff in the province is a bit different from the stuff you see in Gyms taught overseas which are pretty Karatecized. You can also see from the farmer-folk spectators that it's something they've been used to watching for years and a game indigenous to their region.

It's mid-winter here. It's cold (but not by your standards, I imagine). And, at long last, we've acually had some significant amounts of rain.

Since it appears this task is winding down, I wanted to thank you for your efforts on this project. I hope that you'll at least put up for AfD the remaining articles where that was the recommendation. I'm sure there are more articles that should be ridded, but I think I'm going to have to cut back on the WP time and perhaps do some more research on unsourced articles. Thanks again. Hi, I am the person who created the wikiarticle for Spirit Combat. I have a couple of questions I'de like to ask you if you would be so kind as to help me a bit.
1. I am adding as much third.party referencing as I can, even though it may be hard at times. Nevertheless i am a 100% sure that the topic (spirit combat) is of a much more "general notability" material then a ton of wikipedia articles out there.
2. I would like to add two particular pictures to the article i)the spirit combat logo ii) a picture of Soke Brian Dossett. What can I do to achieve this...?
Thanks a LOT for your time and help Andrei A A (talk) 18:08, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
I agree the Gyokko Ryu page needs reliable third party citations, however it is in such dire shape that primary source citations are also needed. The citations I am providing are solid and necessary. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.23.197.39 (talk) 21:18, 23 December 2010 (UTC)
Hi there - with regards to your recent revert of my removal, do you know if the lyrics are PD? I don't know if they're are PD or not, given that they may have been written after January 1, 1923, and may therefore be copyrighted. My edit summary should have been more clear: they may be a copyright violation, and also fail the guidelines in the manual of style and WP:NOT#Lyrics. Given the obvious policy problems, and the fact that these may not be PD, would you now acquiesce to my removal of the text? Chase me ladies, I'm the Cavalry (talk) 23:59, 23 December 2010 (UTC)
