Jose[edit]

I notice you are changing several mentions of Jose W. Diokno to say José. However, the article is currently titled without an accented é, and reliable sources seem to spell it Jose. I do not believe the Filipino name is necessarily spelled with an accent as it is in Spanish. Could you explain why you are making this change? SilverLocust 💬 11:45, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Because that was the convention during his lifetime. Furthermore when viewing all his signatures in national archives as well as his pleadings and position papers at UP Law Center he always signed with the Spanish accent. This is consistent throughout his life and makes sense to follow that convention. This article from an Amnesty International seminar also adopted the same.[1] It would be more historically accurate to follow the Spanish accent, similar to José Rizal, José P. Laurel, and many other Filipino figures during the three sequential colonial periods around the early 20th century. Ninjaramos (talk) 11:53, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This linked PDF says "Jose Diokno" on page 94 (49 in the PDF pages). On which page are you seeing José? If there is good reason to make this change, I can help you open a discussion at Talk:Jose W. Diokno to change the title. But Wikipedia generally has a policy of going with whatever is the common name in reliable, third-party sources. SilverLocust 💬 12:07, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Please try this link, also by the same author Jonathan Power of Amnesty International.[2] Thus the reason why I am compelled to apply『José』to the articles is because that was how Mr. Diokno wrote his own name such as in his signatures and notarized seals, as well as the common naming trend followed by other figures of his day also named José. In that light, this is how the articles can be changed to reflect the preference of the person and context of that society. I hope this helps. Thanks. It is true that this book is a source that uses the spelling José Diokno on the two pages where it mentions him. However, a search of Google Ngrams shows that published books have written his name as "Jose" much more frequently. Therefore, the Wikipedia naming policy I mentioned above (WP:COMMONNAME) would indicate that his name should be written Jose. SilverLocust 💬 13:17, 6 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
