The priority is to indicate notability within the article itself, supported by significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. Thanks.     • You will note that I added templates and categories to indicate that the boat is an ISAF class. Most readers of the article will appreciate the significance of that. Wouldn't it be better to find out something about the subject of the article or the general topic before leaping to judgment so quickly? They don't advertise it much, but all of Transfermarkt's database content is user-generated, making it no more reliable than Wikipedia itself. You'll find an WP:RSN discussion on the matter here, and the decision to disallow Transfermarkt as a source has been reinforced by the WikiProject Football in hte intervening years. The numbers might be perfectly accurate, but without proper sourcing they do not belong in the article, and the burden to find these source lies with the editor who adds the content, you. @Sir Sputnik It rankles a bit to have replaced an implausible and uncited statistic (Kaiser Chiefs having 20 million supporters in Southern Africa) with a believable and cited one (average crowd attendance of 13,000), only to be told that the burden for finding a better source lies on me. Hi Paulgush. Thank you for taking an interest in the article Airspeed. I am currently examining your recent edits, and particularly your edits to the lead section.

Wikipedia guidelines recommend that “… the lead section should be accessible to as broad an audience as possible.” See MOS:INTRO which also says “Where possible, avoid difficult-to-understand terminology …”

Some of your editing is not consistent with these guidelines. For example in your recent edit to the lead you added: IAS: “It is calculated using impact pressure from the pitot static system, assuming sea level static pressure and speed of sound.” (See your diff)

A broad general audience cannot be expected to comprehend such concepts as impact pressure, pitot static system, sea level static pressure, or the significance of the speed of sound – especially for a low-speed aircraft.

An advanced audience of aerospace engineers will challenge your suggestion that indicated airspeed is calculated. Indicated airspeed is influenced by the position error, and this error can only be determined by flight test methods such as tower fly-by, trailing static, or using GPS to fly a triangular course.

Wikipedia recommends that “It is particularly important for the first section (the "lead" section, above the table of contents) to be understandable to a broad readership.” See WP:EXPLAINLEAD.

Our article on Airspeed is a technical article, and WP:Make technical articles understandable provides a lot of good advice on writing for technical articles.

I have to disagree on this though:

An airspeed indicator is not merely a pressure gauge, nor is it magic. It's an analogue computer that does a non-linear calculation. Determining and then correcting for the position error is the act of calibrating it leading to a calibrated airspeed. The ASI itself knows nothing about its errors. Thanks for making your recent changes to Airspeed. They have eliminated the problem. Thanks also for replying to my message.

Where you wrote “It is calculated using impact pressure from the pitot static system ...” and inserted it into the lead you were writing about indicated airspeed. Where you wrote “An airspeed indicator is not merely a pressure gauge ...It’s an analogue computer ...” you are writing about the indicator, the gauge, the piece of hardware that is installed in the instrument panel; and the way it is calibrated by the gauge manufacturer. Indicated airspeed is not a gauge or a piece of hardware.

A PEC diagram can be used to find EAS or CAS corresponding to an IAS. The EAS or CAS can then be used to perform calculations, but IAS is not used in calculations whereas EAS is regularly used in calculations. If you disagree, can you give a numerical example of a calculation that begins or ends with IAS?

When a gauge manufacturer is calibrating an ASI, any calculation of pressure difference across the pitot and static ports is done using TAS, not IAS. (As you know, an ASI is calibrated to read TAS at sea level in the standard atmosphere.) Dolphin (t) 21:30, 22 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
