Shubinator, the bot last ran at 20:26; it's now 04:51 and it hasn't been heard from again, despite a new date having been added to the list at 00:01, and various other changes having been made in the interim. Thanks for whatever you can do to get it moving again. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:52, 15 February 2019 (UTC)
Unfortunately, it's down again; last update was 12:58, 20 February 2019 (UTC), nearly 20 hours ago. Thanks for looking into it! BlueMoonset (talk) 08:19, 21 February 2019 (UTC)
Shubinator, it's been a while since I last requested a list. I found some of the more obvious ones looking at Category:Pending DYK nominations, but much of what's left is hiding in the crowds of properly transcluded ones. Thanks for taking the time to produce this for me; it may be longer than usual... BlueMoonset (talk) 15:59, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
As always, this was a great help. The oldest of these has already been transcluded, reviewed, and promoted to prep, and all of the others are being addressed in some manner or other. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 08:19, 21 February 2019 (UTC)
DYKcheck inflating prose character count?
Shubinator, we've had a case here where DYKcheck is returning 2144 prose characters, and even if you do include the "Citations" and "Bibliography" subheaders in the Reference section (which are indeed just text, but shouldn't be considered prose), I only see 1941 characters when I pull all the prose out into Word and count it there. The nominator is getting similar numbers using a variety of tools.
DYKUpdateBot didn't do the promotion about 30 minutes ago at 00:00 UTC. This was the night we were going to go back from twice daily updates to one a day, so this is a little bit awkward.
I'm going to see whether Materialscientist is around and can do a manual update, but in case you stop by tonight, a check of the UpdateBot would be great. (HousekeepingBot seems just fine; it ran a few minutes ago at 00:28 UTC.) BlueMoonset (talk) 00:35, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
Nope. Nevermind. It ran about 35 minutes late, just as I was writing you. I don't know why it was so late, but it did run. I'll drop a note to Materialscientist to say to ignore me. BlueMoonset (talk) 00:37, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
Heh I was wondering if someone would notice that. Long story short I ran into some trouble while migrating DYKUpdateBot off of Toolforge's Ubuntu grid and onto their Debian grid, things should be good now. Will add more detail in a few minutes about this so talk page stalkers know what's up. Shubinator (talk) 00:56, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
Bot migration Ubuntu → Debian
FYI to my talk page stalkers, as of ~00:43 today DYKUpdateBot and DYKHousekeepingBot were migrated off of Toolforge's Ubuntu grid and onto Toolforge's Debian grid. This was necessary because the Ubuntu grid will be decommissioned next week; more details from the Toolforge folks here. As part of the migration both bots are running on much newer software, in particular newer versions of Java. In theory this shouldn't cause issues, but I wouldn't be surprised if something comes up. As always, please drop a note here if either of the bots are misbehaving.
For the curious, the latest DYKUpdateBot update was delayed because I ran into a bug during the migration where the bot couldn't login. It's not related to the newer software on the Debian grid, the bug would have cropped up the next time DYKUpdateBot was restarted. I've fixed this so we should be good to go now. Shubinator (talk) 01:11, 18 March 2019 (UTC)
Shubinator, I don't know whether it's misbehavior, but DYKHousekeepingBot hasn't run since 23:57, and at 00:01 the Nominations page was updated to add March 27. That should have triggered a run by the bot at around 00:27, but didn't. There haven't been any WugBot moves of hooks to the Approved page (though WugBot did an 01:01 run for the GAN Report page, so it's working) or any new nominations inserted on the Nominations page, both of which would also affect the table. Thanks for whatever you can do here. BlueMoonset (talk) 04:20, 27 March 2019 (UTC)
I'm glad you like it! DYKUpdateBot was originally written nearly a decade ago. Its main dependency, the JavaWikiBotFramework, no longer exists and I don't believe it's possible to download jars or source of the framework. So it's not feasible for you to create a similar bot using the same source code for Vietnamese Wikipedia. Feel free to browse the source code for inspiration though! Shubinator (talk) 03:21, 26 March 2019 (UTC)
I've restarted the bot. It got tripped up by a missing HooksEnd in Queue 3. The bot should post to User:DYKUpdateBot/Errors in that scenario instead of crashing, so looks like there's a bug. Thanks for letting me know! Shubinator (talk) 02:50, 28 March 2019 (UTC)
Both DYK bots down
Shubinator, the DYKHousekeepingBot went down at around 12:00 UTC, and the DYKUpdateBot didn't do its 00:00 UTC update of the main page.
I'm about to head over to Materialscientist's talk page and see whether he can do a manual update. Please see what you can do to get the bots back on their feet when you see this. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 03:45, 11 April 2019 (UTC)
It looks like DYKUpdateBot is down again, though DYKHousekeepingBot has managed to weather the storm and was active at 00:21, a couple of hours ago. Please see what you can do to convince DYKUpdateBot that working is a good thing... Thanks! BlueMoonset (talk) 02:19, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
Sorry for the downtime. This time it's related to the Ubuntu → Debian migration, the newer Java version requires a lot more memory. I've increased the amount of memory available to DYKUpdateBot and started it up again, this time hopefully it'll stay up. Shubinator (talk) 01:04, 15 April 2019 (UTC)
New parameter for DYK bot
Hi Shubinator, {{Article history}} has a new parameter called dyknom, which links to the DYK nomination page for an article. The parameter proposal and technical details are found here. Can you update DYK bot so that this parameter is automatically filled in? I don't know if this is possible, but is there also a way for the bot to go back over existing uses of Article History that use the other DYK parameters, but lack this one, and fill those in? Ergo Sum15:24, 13 April 2019 (UTC)
Use of ' with DYK bot: ProgrammingError: (1064, ...)
DYKHousekeepingbot appears to be down (don't know about DYKUpdatebot yet)
Shubinator, DYKHousekeepingbot last ran today at 16:58 UTC, yet there has been a great deal of activity since then: one new nomination, two approvals, and seven promotions to prep from the regular approved section. (There may also have been promotions from the Special Occasions section, but that doesn't affect the bot.)
Can you please take a look and see what's up? And, in case you see this before midnight UTC, check DYKUpdateBot just to make sure it's okay. I'll try to keep an eye on it, and if it doesn't run, I'll post here again and try to get an admin to take up the slack. Many thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 23:14, 1 May 2019 (UTC)
Unfortunately the DYK credits and the DYK archives follow different paradigms for time. DYK credits show when the article was placed on the Main Page, DYK archives show when the article was removed from the Main Page. For technical reasons it's difficult to get them on the same paradigm. Shubinator (talk) 05:04, 3 May 2019 (UTC)
Recently, several Wikipedia admin accounts were compromised. The admin accounts were desysopped on an emergency basis. In the past, the Committee often resysopped admin accounts as a matter of course once the admin was back in control of their account. The committee has updated its guidelines. Admins may now be required to undergo a fresh Request for Adminship (RfA) after losing control of their account.
What do I need to do?
Only to follow the instructions in this message.
Check that your password is unique (not reused across sites).
Check that your password is strong (not simple or guessable).
Enable Two-factor authentication (2FA), if you can, to create a second hurdle for attackers.
How can I find out more about two-factor authentication (2FA)?
Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)
ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.
Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.
We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.
Looking at {{DYK talk}}, there seems to be a parameter to feature images that run in DYK on the respective article talk pages (see Talk:Isochrone map, for example), which doesn't seem to be utilised for recent DYK hooks. Should User:DYKUpdateBot be configured to automatically do this for future DYK sets? — RAVENPVFF·talk·13:32, 24 May 2019 (UTC)
I've looked at this before, and from what I remember, the bot can't easily figure out which article(s) goes with the image. Sometimes the hook for the image isn't the first hook, and sometimes the hook doesn't have the exact string "(pictured)". Shubinator (talk) 02:17, 25 May 2019 (UTC)
I think the standard practice nowadays, according to WP:DYKIMG, is that the image is always for the first hook, no? Even if it doesn't refer to the picture in the hook, the picture should still be associated with it. — RAVENPVFF·talk·03:11, 25 May 2019 (UTC)
DYKHousekeepingbot?
Shubinator, I can't find any reason for the bot to be down, such as an unclosed "small" tag, but the bot last ran at 16:23, 9 June 2019 (UTC) and it's now about 06:37 on 10 June, and the appropriate update adding June 10 was made over six hours ago, which should have triggered a new bot run even if nothing else did. Can you please take a look? Many thanks. (Sorry if I missed something obvious.) BlueMoonset (talk) 06:49, 10 June 2019 (UTC)
I've started it up again. The logs cut off at the end of May so I'm not sure what crashed it. Thanks for letting me know! Shubinator (talk) 02:28, 11 June 2019 (UTC)
Yet another untranscluded DYK nominations list
Shubinator, it looks like I've waited rather a while: it's over four months since I last requested a list. It shouldn't be quite as bad as it might be, as I've found a number looking at Category:Pending DYK nominations, but much of what's left is hiding in the crowds of properly transcluded ones. Thanks for taking the time to produce this for me when you get the chance. Hope all is well! BlueMoonset (talk) 17:24, 26 June 2019 (UTC)
