Hello! I wish to cite a source in an infobox, but when I tried to do that it just added the citation as text instead of a citation.
Do you know how to properly add a citation to an infobox? --HaloSpartanCats (talk) 23:22, 26 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@HaloSpartanCats It's really complicated to do this in the Visual Editor (which is what I assume you are using). You will need to create the citation and then use the source editor to move the citations (the citation should start with <ref>{{ and end with }}</ref>) into the correct template parameter for the infobox (i.e. if there is a infobox like {{Infobox person |death = 2001 |birth= 1999...}} and if you wanted to add a citation to the death field you would effectively make the code {{Infobox person |death = 2001<ref>{{cite web|url=https://example.com|title=Obituary for John Doe|access-date=2024-03-27}}</ref> |birth= 1999 ...}}) Sohom (talk) 01:33, 28 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Notification of administrators without tools[edit]
Greetings, Sohom Datta. You are receiving this notification because you've agreed to consider endorsing prospective admin candidates identified by the process outlined at Administrators without tools. Recently, the following editor(s) received this distinction and the associated endearing title:
Hey, thanks for all the work you put into reviewing Yahoo!_data_breaches. Totally agree with all your points (some are my carelessness and some are my timidness) I'll rewrite and try again in a little while: I certainly think I couldn't have moved much further forward without another editor encouraging an even deeper revision than I've already done. Much appreciated. Joe (talk) 18:29, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
On1 April 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Cookie stuffing, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that you could be sentenced to serve time in prison for stuffing cookies? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Cookie stuffing. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Cookie stuffing), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Backlog update: The October drive reduced the article backlog from 11,626 to 7,609 and the redirect backlog from 16,985 to 6,431! Congratulations to Schminnte, who led with over 2,300 points.
Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.
Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.
It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!
2023 Awards
Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!
Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.
Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.

Web browsers can use tools called extensions. There is now a Chrome extension called Citation Needed which you can use to see if an online statement is supported by a Wikipedia article. This is a small experiment to see if Wikipedia can be used this way. Because it is a small experiment, it can only be used in Chrome in English.
A new Edit Recovery feature has been added to all wikis, available as a user preference. Once you enable it, your in-progress edits will be stored in your web browser, and if you accidentally close an editing window or your browser or computer crashes, you will be prompted to recover the unpublished text. Please leave any feedback on the project talk page. This was the #8 wish in the 2023 Community Wishlist Survey.

The second round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 April. This round was particularly competitive: each of the 32 contestants who advanced to Round 3 scored at least 141 points. This is the highest number of points required to advance to Round 3 since 2014.
The following scorers in Round 2 all scored more than 500 points:
BennyOnTheLoose (submissions) with 548 points, mostly from a featured article about the snooker player John Pulman, two featured lists, and one good article;
The full scores for Round 2 can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 18 featured articles, 22 featured lists, and 186 good articles, 76 in the news credits and at least 200 did you know credits. They have conducted 165 featured article reviews, as well as 399 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 21 articles to featured topics and good topics.
Remember that any content promoted after 28 April but before the start of Round 3 can be claimed during Round 3, which starts on 1 May at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. RFA2024 update: phase I concluded, phase II begins[edit]
Hi there! Phase I of the Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review has concluded, with several impactful changes gaining community consensus and proceeding to various stages of implementation. Some proposals will be implemented in full outright; others will be discussed at phase II before being implemented; and still others will proceed on a trial basis before being brought to phase II. The following proposals have gained consensus:
Can you help me better understand how the modules work with Go and Github? I constantly get an error like this. Reading that thread doesn't really help me understand what causes the problem or how to fix it--I tried everything they suggested.
The main problem for me is that I don't really understand how Go identifies which modules to download to a local directory, how it knows it has the "right" copy, etc. The documentation I looked at for Go modules is either too detailed or too general. For example, it put this in the go.mod file:
The "v2.0.0-20240505063049-1508c8717f87" seems to be some version number of the code on Github or a hash # of some sort. How exactly did it come up with that number? If I could better understand the key steps Go uses when it runs a command like "go mod init" or "go mod tidy" when working with code stored on github, that might help. I need to understand the relationship between the original on github and the copy it downloaded, which will help me understand why the local copy is missing something it needs (or some path is incorrect).
@David Tornheim To my understanding Golang pins specific versions of dependencies using Github commit hashes (to prevent Supply chain attacks). The string github.com/DavidTornheim/ybtools/v2 v2.0.0-20240505063049-1508c8717f87 has multiple parts, github.com/DavidTornheim/ybtools denotes the repository, /v2 denotes to Golang that the v2 version of the module was specifically required. The rest of the string is a pseudo version number generated by Golang that denotes the specific commit/state of the module when the module was required. It's of the form v<base_version_prefix>-<timestamp>-<git_commit_id>. The base version prefix is the last version published in the repository (in this case 2.0.0), the timestamp corresponds to the timestamp of the last commit to the repository (i.e. 5 May 2024 etc) and the commit hash is 1508c8717f87. Google has published a pretty well specified doc about this at https://go.dev/doc/modules/version-numbers and https://go.dev/doc/modules/gomod-ref which are also pretty good resources on the topic :)
Wrt to your specific case, I think Golang objecting to/complaining about the fact that github.com/DavidTornheim/ybtools does not actually have a published v2 version as specified by the string. Sohom (talk) 20:52, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. That's helpful. I'll probably have a couple of more questions. Hopefully, I'll make some progress with the information you provided.--David Tornheim (talk) 22:35, 5 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sohom Datta: Unfortunately, I'm still having trouble. When I type:
But that file does not ask for v1.2.3 of anything (and not at line 12 or 13). I can't find anything in my code (or the original) that asks for v1.2.3. Is it trying to parse an older version of go.mod? If so, is there a reason it is not getting the newest version? Is there a way to look at v0.0.0-20240505230953-00203c1cab87?
@David Tornheim I don't think it's looking for v1.2.3, I think it cannot parse line 12 and 13 and is telling you to correct the lines 12 and 13 to be in the format require module/path v<any_version_number>. Based on looking at https://github.com/DavidTornheim/yapperbot-frs/blob/master/go.mod line 12 doesn't have any version number, and line 13 is getting tripped up because # is not considered a valid character (A comment string in go.mod would need to start with //) Sohom (talk) 00:53, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@David Tornheim Line 14 still doesn't conform to the require module/path v<any_version_number> format. Maybe you can switch that line for github.com/DavidTornheim/ybtools v0.0.0-20240505230558-e0c68ccf8803 (which is what Golang generates when I try to add ybtools to the fresh project). Sohom (talk) 01:06, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That fixed it! Thanks so much for your help. If Go's error messages were a little more clear and specific--like your explanations--I probably could have figured it out on my own! --David Tornheim (talk) 01:20, 6 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I have today been amending false/unreliable information on a page and my edit was removed with the reason "take it to the talk page". Is this sufficient reason to remove an edit which had sources to back it up? --Seelers (talk) 00:33, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Seelers If prior discussion has occured around the subject, or if the subject is controversial, then I think that's a pretty acceptable response (see the policy page on edit-revert-discuss which is a core pillar of Wikipedia). Coming to the sources, sportskeeda, instagram and facebook are generally (read: always) avoided as sources because of their tendency to be outright wrong or unverifiable in most aspects. I think the editor is justified in reverting you and asking you to discuss the subject on a talk page where you might be able to show more reliable sources to support your edit. Sohom (talk) 03:05, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
In general "no longer needed" is not a WP:CSD except in your own userspace, and even then with some exceptions see WP:U1, so you should avoid using it. That does not preclude deletion by listing at XFD, it is merely a reflection of the fact that all CSD are specific and narrow, WP:!G6 is also good reading. In that one specific case WP:RDRAFT means it won't be deleted even at WP:RFD, however in general uselessness is one factor that can be considered when evaluating pages at RFD, WP:TFD, and WP:MFD, thank you. 2601:5CC:8300:A7F0:A165:7AFC:68F9:104D (talk) 18:22, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Point taken, I'm fine with the page being around until it gets deleted. I'll just note that a similar page in my userspace would have been deleted under U1/G6. Sohom (talk) 18:30, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Namespaces are central to how CSD is organized, hence only articles can be deleted under WP:ACSD and only files under WP:FCSD etc. In this specific case the community has decided to retain draft to main redirects as a result of an WP:RFC that resulted in WP:RDRAFT, but has not chosen to do so for user to main redirects. There are also some projecttalkspace to main redirects that are retained as a legacy from when that was an allowed staging area for drafts. All of which is to say deletion can be complicated which is why I decided to drop a friendly note here. 2601:5CC:8300:A7F0:A165:7AFC:68F9:104D (talk) 18:36, 16 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sohom, I have some questions about formatting numbers. The manual of style seems adamant on using the dot as a decimal separator and comma for thousands, though the international standard says to use spaces for thousands and either of the two options for decimal separators. Is it unacceptable to write 12 345 instead of 12,345? The majority of the world uses the comma as a decimal separator and using it to separate thousands can cause confusion and tends to be less readable. And one other thing: I've seen articles using currency symbols placed before the numeric value. I am aware that this is quite common in the case of the US dollar and the sterling, as these are associated with countries that use this format. This, however, is not the case for the euro, which is always placed after the number (e.g. 2.35 €). The manual of style is fine with symbols being placed after the number in other foreign currencies, but treats the euro as in the case of dollars or pounds. Not to mention that it is simply more logical and readable for the symbol to follow after the amount. Why does Wikipedia have a problem with this or the use of space as a thousands separator? Shouldn't we adhere to international standards rather than country-specific formats, especially in the case of a de facto international language?
@Formatmatters Short answer, take a look at Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Dates and numbers. There are some pretty detailed guidelines surrounding how to format these numerical values that have been decided after being discussed for eons by multiple editors. I believe 12 345 is fine, I will ask you to find a citation for The majority of the world uses the comma as a decimal separator In my experience, the opposite is true (I recognize that if you've lived in european countries the format we use might seem confusing, but the rest of the world (the Americas, Asia and Oceania) uses the comma to separate digits.) The same goes for using the currency at the end of the numbers. While it might be more readable to you, having lived most of my life outside of european countries, I find the use of currency symbols at the end of numbers positively unsettling :) Sohom (talk) 03:14, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 28 May. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 29 May. It will be on all wikis from 30 May (calendar). [57][58]
When you visit a wiki where you don't yet have a local account, local rules such as edit filters can sometimes prevent your account from being created. Starting this week, MediaWiki takes your global rights into account when evaluating whether you can override such local rules. [59]
On29 May 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Boroline, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the antiseptic cream Boroline was marketed to appeal to nationalistic sentiments? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Boroline. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Boroline), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Sure, I'll take a look at it this week and try to leave some comments if I feel confident. Tho, tbh, British politics is very very far from my normal comfort zone of stuff that I edit. Sohom (talk) 03:36, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sohom Datta It's more about a member of the British royal family and hence you will hardly find politics-related stuff within the article. Furthermore, it would be a good read and if possible, please do leave your comments before the end of this month. Looking forward to your response. Regards. MSincccc (talk) 04:12, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sohom Datta Would you consider reviewing Catherine's FAC? If you're interested, I assure you it will be a good read, to say the least. I would greatly appreciate any comments that could help improve the article's quality. Regards. MSincccc (talk) 14:53, 29 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sohom Datta Thank you for offering to review the article and leave your suggestions. Tomorrow will be the third day. In the meantime, please let me know if you are interested in any future collaborations. I would be happy to assist. Looking forward to your response. Regards. MSincccc (talk) 17:57, 31 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sohom Datta Thank you for your comments at the FAC. Given that the article covers her public life as well as other significant aspects of her life to date, it is somewhat longer than most other articles. Nonetheless, I have recently removed information I found irrelevant and will continue to do so. I hope to address all your comments and improve the quality of the article. Thank you for your time once again. I look forward to further suggestions and await your response. Regards. MSincccc (talk) 03:40, 1 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sohom Datta Would you kindly consider leaving a closing note on Catherine's FAC if you have no additional suggestions for the article? We have endeavoured to address all your concerns regarding the article effectively, and we would appreciate any further input you may have. If not, I anticipate your final opinion. Looking forward to your response soon. Regards. MSincccc (talk) 06:31, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Sohom Datta Do you have any further suggestions for Catherine's FAC? If there are no further suggestions, kindly indicate so on the discussion page. Regards and yours faithfully, MSincccc (talk) 15:31, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'll take a look at it again, I saw that you had other reviewers and did not want to step on their toes. (Also got sidetracked by Firefox :) Sohom (talk) 15:43, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also btw, (since you mentioned collaborating) if you are interested in tech/wanna work on something tech related after your current FAC I'd appreciate some help over at Firefox 😆 (I'm hoping to take it to a GA at some point in the distant future. Sohom (talk) 15:55, 7 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sohom. When you have 5 more edits to the template namespace (including sandboxes but not talk pages), I would encourage you to restore your permission request. SilverLocust💬10:32, 3 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the warm welcome, will definitely take a look and around and try and contribute whatever I can :) Sohom (talk) 13:17, 4 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am sure you will! Misclicks happen because it's a feature where you are not asked if you really mean it, but they are no serious problem. A project member's article is TFA today, and I have an interesting biography in the DYK section, enjoy reading as well as writing! I offer a daily "story", check them out ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:19, 5 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You can use this user right to perform maintenance, answer edit requests, and make any other simple and generally uncontroversial edits to templates, modules, and edinotices. You can also use it to enact more complex or controversial edits, after those edits are first made to a test sandbox, and their technical reliability as well as their consensus among other informed editors has been established. If you are willing to process edit requests on templates and modules, keep in mind that you are taking responsibility to ensure the edits have consensus and are technically sound.
This user right gives you access to some of Wikipedia's most important templates and modules; it is critical that you edit them wisely and that you only make edits that are backed up by consensus. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password.
If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time.
If you were granted the permission on a temporary basis you will need to re-apply for the permission a few days before it expires including in your request a permalink to the discussion where it was granted and a {{ping}} for the administrator who granted the permission. You can find the permalink in your rights log.

The software used to render SVG files has been updated to a new version, fixing many longstanding bugs in SVG rendering. [65]
The HTML used to render all headings is being changed to improve accessibility. It was changed last week in some skins (Vector legacy and Minerva). Please test gadgets on your wiki on these skins and report any related problems so that they can be resolved before this change is made in Vector-2022. The developers are still considering the introduction of a Gadget API for adding buttons to section titles if that would be helpful to tool creators, and would appreciate any input you have on that.
The HTML markup used for citations by Parsoid changed last week. In places where Parsoid previously added the mw-reference-text class, Parsoid now also adds the reference-text class for better compatibility with the legacy parser. More details are available. [66]
Problems
There was a bug with the Content Translation interface that caused the tools menus to appear in the wrong location. This has now been fixed. [67]

The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 June. It will be on all wikis from 13 June (calendar). [68][69]
The new version of MediaWiki includes another change to the HTML markup used for citations: Parsoid will now generate a <span class="mw-cite-backlink"> wrapper for both named and unnamed references for better compatibility with the legacy parser. Interface administrators should verify that gadgets that interact with citations are compatible with the new markup. More details are available. [70]
On multilingual wikis that use the <translate> system, there is a feature that shows potentially-outdated translations with a pink background until they are updated or confirmed. From this week, confirming translations will be logged, and there is a new user-right that can be required for confirming translations if the community requests it. [71]
Notification of administrators without tools[edit]
Greetings, Sohom Datta. You are receiving this notification because you've agreed to consider endorsing prospective admin candidates identified by the process outlined at Administrators without tools. Recently, the following editor(s) received this distinction and the associated endearing title:

People who attempt to add an external link in the visual editor will now receive immediate feedback if they attempt to link to a domain that a project has decided to block. Please see Edit check for more details. [72]
The dark mode beta feature is now available on category and help pages, as well as more special pages. There may be contrast issues. Please report bugs on the project talk page. [75]
Problems
Cloud Services tools were not available for 25 minutes last week. This was caused by a faulty hardware cable in the data center. [76]
Last week, styling updates were made to the Vector 2022 skin. This caused unforeseen issues with templates, hatnotes, and images. Changes to templates and hatnotes were reverted. Most issues with images were fixed. If you still see any, report them here. [77]
Changes later this week
The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 18 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 19 June. It will be on all wikis from 20 June (calendar). [78][79]
Starting June 18, the Reference Edit Check will be deployed to a new set of Wikipedias. This feature is intended to help newcomers and to assist edit-patrollers by inviting people who are adding new content to a Wikipedia article to add a citation when they do not do so themselves. During a test at 11 wikis, the number of citations added more than doubled when Reference Check was shown to people. Reference Check is community configurable. [80]
Mailing lists will be unavailable for roughly two hours on Tuesday 10:00–12:00 UTC. This is to enable migration to a new server and upgrade its software. [81]
Yeah that makes sense, I've gone ahead and made some modifications which should allow for the dates to be parsed correctly, you'll probably need to figure out how unsuccessful and successful RFAs are marked and also translate the rest of the UI, but overall it should work now. Sohom (talk) 19:07, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Sohom! I've enjoyed completing the tasks suggested to me and, occasionally, researching and writing more thorough sections to those articles. When and how should I decide whether to remove the issues tags on those pages? See for example Alan Bircher: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_Bircher — I added more thorough documentation of his awards, updated his current employment status, and added a more thorough section about his firing from a prestigious swim team. --Healthcare dot goof (talk) 21:44, 23 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Healthcare dot goof Your contributions look great, I've gone ahead and removed the tags (you could have done them as well when you think the problem has been adequately addressed). Two points of feedback, make sure to add links to terms that a person might not be familiar with and keep our biography of living people policy in mind when editing anything controversial (unless proven, always mention that the action was alleged etc). Editors will notice that there have been some changes to the background color of text in the diff view, and the color of the byte-change numbers, last week. These changes are intended to make text more readable in both light mode and dark mode, and are part of a larger effort to increase accessibility. You can share your comments or questions on the project talkpage. [82]
The text colors that are used for visited-links, hovered-links, and active-links, were also slightly changed last week to improve their accessibility in both light mode and dark mode. [83]
Problems
You can copy permanent links to talk page comments by clicking on a comment's timestamp. This feature did not always work when the topic title was very long and the link was used as a wikitext link. This has been fixed. Thanks to Lofhi for submitting the bug. [84]

The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 25 June. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 26 June. It will be on all wikis from 27 June (calendar). [85][86]
Starting 26 June, all talk pages messages' timestamps will become a link at English Wikipedia, making this feature available for you to use at all wikis. This link is a permanent link to the comment. It allows users to find the comment they were linked to, even if this comment has since been moved elsewhere. You can read more about this feature on Difforon Mediawiki.org. [87]
On26 June 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Client Hints, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Google's Client Hints proposal was initially classified as "harmful" by Mozilla? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Client Hints. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Client Hints), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
The third round of the 2024 WikiCup ended on 28 June. As with Round 2, this round was competitive: each of the 16 contestants who advanced to Round 4 scored at least 256 points.
The following editors all scored more than 400 points in Round 3:
Sammi Brie (submissions) with 557 points, mostly from 1 featured article on KNXV-TV, 5 good articles, and 8 did you know nominations; and
AryKun (submissions) with 415 points, mostly from 1 featured article on Great cuckoo-dove, with a high number of bonus points from that article.
The full scores for round 3 can be seen here. So far this year, competitors have gotten 28 featured articles, 38 featured lists, 240 good articles, 92 in the news credits, and at least 285 did you know credits. They have conducted 279 featured article reviews, as well as 492 good article reviews and peer reviews, and have added 22 articles to featured topics and good topics.
Remember that any content promoted after 28 June but before the start of Round 4 can be claimed during Round 4, which starts on 1 July at 00:00 (UTC). Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether for a good article, featured content, or anything else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed.
Not sure if your article qualifies? See the guidelines for more information or contact a coordinator for verification.

Over the next three weeks, dark mode will become available for all users, both logged-in and logged-out, starting with the mobile web version. This fulfils one of the top-requested community wishes, and improves low-contrast reading and usage in low-light settings. As part of these changes, dark mode will also work on User-pages and Portals. There is more information in the latest Web team update. [88]
Logged-in users can now set global preferences for the text-size and dark-mode, thanks to a combined effort across Foundation teams. This allows Wikimedians using multiple wikis to set up a consistent reading experience easily, for example by switching between light and dark mode only once for all wikis. [89]
If you use a very old web browser some features might not work on the Wikimedia wikis. This affects Internet Explorer 11 and versions of Chrome, Firefox and Safari older than 2016. This change makes it possible to use new CSS features and to send less code to all readers. [90][91]
Wikipedia Admins can customize local wiki configuration options easily using Community Configuration. Community Configuration was created to allow communities to customize how some features work, because each language wiki has unique needs. At the moment, admins can configure Growth features on their home wikis, in order to better recruit and retain new editors. More options will be provided in the coming months. [92]
Editors interested in language issues that are related to Unicode standards, can now discuss those topics at a new conversation space in MediaWiki.org. The Wikimedia Foundation is now a member of the Unicode Consortium, and the coordination group can collaboratively review the issues discussed and, where appropriate, bring them to the attention of the Unicode Consortium.
Hello my mentor, I wanted to ask which is the best way to access a draft in wikipedia? from my understanding I think the only way to access a previously written draft is to just go on my watchlist and click on the raw pages, then just follow the link on my previously written drafts. Is this the way to access it? Thank you so much! --Trbhmn (talk) 13:29, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Trbhmn I think that is a valid way of navigating to a draft, I personally often just type the name of the article/draft in the top search bar as well. I find that to be quicker since I have a lot of watchlisted pages. Sohom (talk) 18:12, 2 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

To learn more about the deployment status and how to request this extension for your wiki, visit the CampaignEvents page on Meta-wiki.
Editors using the iOS Wikipedia app who have more than 50 edits can now use the Add an Image feature. This feature presents opportunities for small but useful contributions to Wikipedia.

Wikimedia developers can now officially continue to use both Gerrit and GitLab, due to a June 24 decision by the Wikimedia Foundation to support software development on both platforms. Gerrit and GitLab are both code repositories used by developers to write, review, and deploy the software code that supports the MediaWiki software that the wiki projects are built on, as well as the tools used by editors to create and improve content. This decision will safeguard the productivity of our developers and prevent problems in code review from affecting our users. More details are available in the Migration status page.
The Wikimedia Foundation seeks applicants for the Product and Technology Advisory Council (PTAC). This group will bring technical contributors and Wikimedia Foundation together to co-define a more resilient, future-proof technological platform. Council members will evaluate and consult on the movement's product and technical activities, so that we develop multi-generational projects. We are looking for a range of technical contributors across the globe, from a variety of Wikimedia projects. Please apply here by August 10.
Editors with rollback user-rights who use the Wikipedia App for Android can use the new Edit Patrol features. These features include a new feed of Recent Changes, related links such as Undo and Rollback, and the ability to create and save a personal library of user talk messages to use while patrolling. If your wiki wants to make these features available to users who do not have rollback rights but have reached a certain edit threshold, you can contact the team. You can read more about this project on Diff blog.
Next week, functionaries, volunteers maintaining tools, and software development teams are invited to test the temporary accounts feature on testwiki. Temporary accounts is a feature that will help improve privacy on the wikis. No further temporary account deployments are scheduled yet. Please share your opinions and questions on the project talk page. [95]
Editors who upload files cross-wiki, or teach other people how to do so, may wish to join a Wikimedia Commons discussion. The Commons community is discussing limiting who can upload files through the cross-wiki upload/Upload dialog feature to users auto-confirmed on Wikimedia Commons. This is due to the large amount of copyright violations uploaded this way. There is a short summary at Commons:Cross-wiki upload and discussion at Commons:Village Pump.
