List of City University of New York institutions[edit]

Nominator(s): MBisanz talk 18:13, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I am nominating this for featured list because I started this article a few months back, worked it through DYK and PR and this it now could pass for FL. MBisanz talk 18:13, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Done. MBisanz talk 04:23, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

General
  • Dabs and external links check out fine.
Lead
  • Do not bold anything in the lead that is not the title: The City University of New York (CUNY) system is not the title of the article.
  • Done
  • If you complete my suggestion above, you can link to the article there, and unlink it in the sentence that follows the opening sentence.
  • Done
  • CUNY and the State University of New York are entirely different university systems, despite the fact that both are public institutions which receive funding from New York State. -- Is New York State referring to New York (U.S. state)?
  • Done
  • 64 SUNY and 24 CUNY campus units are all part of University of the State of New York -- 1)Per MOS:NUM, do not start sentences with a number 2)You need to add a (SUNY) to the sentence where the full spelling of this acronym appears, which I believe is the previous sentence before this 3)This sentence needs a period.
  • Done
  • USNY, which is the governmental umbrella organization for most education-related institutions and many education-related personnel (both public and private) in New York State, and which includes, as a component, the New York State Education Department. -- 1)Same thing here about the New York State
  • I thought I am only supposed to link a term the first time I use it?
  • Yeah you are, what I meant in my comment above was that I was asking you personally what you were referring to, and since you are referring to the U.S. state, it would be best if you state both these instances as the state of New York.--Truco 503 19:21, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Done
History
  • The Free Academy later became the City College of New York, the oldest institution among the CUNY colleges. -- This link to Free Academy should come in the first mention, not here.
  • Done
  • Over the years the configuration of the units of CUNY has changed. -- 1)Comma after years
  • Done
  • Also, Lehman College was formerly a branch campus of Hunter College that was known as Hunter-in-the-Bronx. -- It would be best not to start this sentence with Also, reword
  • Done
  • State which unit has the smallest enrollment.
  • I thought about this, but the small professional schools screw up the size, so I thought it best to leave that out.
  • What I find missing is an explanation of the word unit, as to what it means. Does it mean university system? If so, you should explain that or have a link to it.
  • "Unit" is how I get around the distinctions of "school", "college", and "university", I could call it a "component" if it would be more clear.
  • Done
List
  • On my screen the table starts at the second image, leaving white space above it next to the first image.
  • Done
  • Remove the periods from the notes section, they are not complete statements.
  • Done
  • Shouldn't The City College sort by "C" instead of "T"?
  • Done
  • The enrollment column does not sort properly, use {{sort}} for this.
  • Done
  • The references should not be sortable.
  • Done
References
  • There is an inconsistency in the linking of publishers, either link all of them that have Wikipedia articles or don't link them at all.--Truco 503 01:58, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Support, all issues resolved. Dabomb87 (talk) 22:51, 20 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Resolved issues, Dabomb87 (talk)
Comment Images need alternative text per criterion 5b. Also, image captions that are not complete sentences should not have periods at the end. Dabomb87 (talk) 03:29, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I'm going to fix the periods, but I thought I had alt text for all of them. Am I missing something? MBisanz talk 04:23, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, punctuation done. MBisanz talk 19:49, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I was careless and copy-pasted the wrong message. Dabomb87 (talk) 03:12, 13 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Comments from Dabomb87 (talk · contribs)

  • "three different types "
  • "As of 2009[update], CUNY is the nation's largest urban public university" Comma after here.
  • "public institutions which receive funding"-->public institutions that receive funding
  • "The 64 SUNY and 24 CUNY campus institutions are all part of "
  • "held by individual campuses" Comma after here.
  • "a Free Academy for the purpose of extending the benefits of education gratuitously to persons who have been pupils in the common schools of the …city and county of New York." Per WP:PUNC, the quotation mark should be inside the period. Also, there should be a space on either side of the ellipis.
  • "land-area" No hyphen.
  • Is there any way you can explain/link "Senior", "Junior", and "Graduate" in the Type column?
  • Perhaps this is an exception, but should "The Bronx" be sorted as a "B" instead of a "T"?
  • The "Notes" in the table should not have a period at the end because they are not complete sentences.
  • Because the table is sortable, the locations need to be linked on all occurences.
  • Only one category? Dabomb87 (talk) 16:57, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think I fixed everything mentioned. MBisanz talk 01:48, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sources look good. Dabomb87 (talk) 16:57, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

*Oppose (apologies for the delay in the review)
    • You say "graduate/professional schools" are they referred to this way or are they either graduate or professional schools? In other words, would "graduate or professional schools" be more appropriate prose than using the slash?
    • "...is the nation's largest urban ..." minor point, and perhaps obvious to most, but you haven't mentioned which "nation" you mean. And because of your intelligent linking beforehand, there's no absolute linking to the United States...
    • "... are entirely different ..." - is entirely really what you mean, or do you mean very different? Especially as you go on to say they are both "public institutions that receive funding from the state of New York".
    • "University of the State of New York USNY" I guess USNY should be in parentheses.
    • Is the list intended to be alphabetical by "Name" to start with? If so, Sophie Davis is out of order.
    • Don't see the utility of ordering the notes. There aren't many and they're free text.
    • Why is SUNY relinked in the table and CUNY not?
    • What is CMA in ref 5?
    • refs 69 and 92 are notes, not references.
    • Ref 8 has pp. instead of p. (drop the s from pages in the ref).
    • I've been informed several times by my colleagues over the pond that it's "The New York Times", not just New York Times. See ref 12.
    • A lot of your references are called "Institution Lookup", e.g. ref 34. I can't see that text, and what would be far more useful would be "Home > Carnegie Classifications > CUNY College of Staten Island" or just "CUNY College of Staten Island". Same with all the College Search and College Navigator links.
    • Refs 58 and 62 have, well, issues...
  • The Rambling Man (talk) 16:50, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I'll get to this tonight. MBisanz talk 08:59, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Well after an hour of errors, I think I covered all your comments. MBisanz talk 13:34, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Much better - notes are still sortable. CMA is red linked, why not just spell it out, you can keep it linked if you like. Ref 10 has pp. instead of p. The Rambling Man (talk) 18:08, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I covered those 3 now. MBisanz talk 18:12, 31 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
