Wikipedia:Knowledge gaps in women's health

This is the landing page for the project on women's health on Wikipedia. This project aims to map the knowledge gaps related to women’s health on English Wikipedia and curate resources [text, citations, data] that are useful for bridging these gaps. The WikiCred grant that allowed for financial support for this project can be found here.

Wikipedia is the largest encyclopaedia, with its English language version containing over 6 million articles. Ensuring that accurate and comprehensive information about women's health is available can help to improve public understanding of the various aspects of women's health. Research^[1] has shown that Wikipedia is lacking in gender diversity, both in terms of content^[2] as well as participation^[3] of women. Furthermore, women’s health related information were found to be neglected on English Wikipedia and Wikipedia editors have frequently commented that knowledge gaps exist in articles related to women’s health on English Wikipedia. Therefore, it becomes important to map the knowledge gaps related to women’s health, curate resources for bridging these gaps, and conduct events to encourage editors to bridge these gaps.

Topic areas covered in this project include:

• Reproductive health: This includes topics such as fertility, contraception, pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care.

• Sexual health: This includes topics such as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), sexual dysfunction, and sexual violence.

• Gynecological health: This includes topics such as menstrual health, menstrual disorders and gynecological tumors.

• Mental health: This includes topics such as anxiety, depression, and postpartum mood disorders in women.

• Physical health: This includes topics such as heart disease, osteoporosis, and cancer that affect women disproportionately or differently from men.

• Preventive and social health : This includes topics such as diet, exercise, and preventive screenings that are of importance to women.

• Social and cultural issues: This includes topics such as reproductive rights, gender-based violence, and the impact of social and cultural factors on women's health.
