History of western art music in the classical and romantic eras, 1750-1900. The people, institutions and technology that were necessary for instrumental and vocal genres of music to thrive. Biographies, cultural context, aesthetic ideology approached through readings, lectures, videos. Students are assigned a project for which they compile a bibliography and give a presentation.
