WikiProject Countries to-do list:

  • Here are some tasks awaiting attention:

    Referencing templates for old countries[edit]

I think that there should be a referencing templates for countries that no longer exist. (like USSR, East Germany...), though they still be used like in 1980 Summer Olympics medal count.500LL 19:21, Jun 20, 2005 (UTC)

    Updated...
...to reflect changes to flag templates. These mechanisms have been replaced, as per discussion on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Flag Template. Also, for Olympic articles, please see the revised {{flagIOC}} template, which works with all historic teams and historic flags. Andrwsc 22:54, 22 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Mixed country codes[edit]

This list seems to mix ISO and IOC codes. Antigua and Barbuda is ATG (ISO) and ANT (IOC). The Bahamas is BHS (ISO) and BAH (IOC). Templates were already created using ISO codes, ie: United Nations member states. Conversion to {{country}} is under way and will take place when SEWilcoBot finishes initializing ISO data. (SEWilco 07:31, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC))

    BRN[edit]

Problem with {{BRN}}: BRN is Brunei for ISO but Bahrain for IOC. Which country should it take on? Chanheigeorge 23:34, 30 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

    ISO only please[edit]

Please focus on using ISO codes. It is a good idea to teach a standard, and it reduces new references to miscellaneous codes. (SEWilco 04:19, 31 August 2005 (UTC))[reply]

So I'll change {{BRN}} to Brunei instead of Bahrain. Chanheigeorge 06:34, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

    Smaller flags[edit]

In some list the flags (specially those from Belgium  Belgium and Switserland  Switzerland) turn out to be quit big. See e.g. winner list from Liège-Bastogne-Liège:

To mitigate this problem I've create a small template: {{sBEL}} ({{sBEL}) and {{sSUI}} ({{sSUI}). The table look like this then:

Any comments and ideas how to proceed from here on? Bart l 06:43, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

File a Bugzilla request for enhancement which allows specification of the maximum vertical and horizontal size of an image, so the different height/width ratio of narrow images will not produce excessively tall images. Or request that countries use a standard flag size. (SEWilco 03:00, 8 September 2005 (UTC))[reply]
This can already be done. Simply do, for example, 200x100px to limit an image to 100 pixels high by 200 wide. dbenbenn | talk 20:20, 10 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
    OK, look great ! thx Bart l 09:56, 11 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
    Excellent. (SEWilco 18:21, 11 September 2005 (UTC))[reply]

    GBR2[edit]

GBR2 has been nominated for deletion.

    {{GBR2}}

    doktorb wordsdeeds 11:25, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    Abbriviation templates[edit]

Are there currently templates that return a countries abbreviated form and personification. For example, an England template that returns "Eng" and another one that returns "English". josh (talk) 18:45, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Pakistan template does not work properly[edit]

The Pakistan template does not work. Has something to do with it's alias Islamic Pakistan. So the link leads to a page that does not yet exist. I made a temp fix for this by redirecting the Islamic Pakistan page to the Pakistan page. As I don't know how to edit templates :) Sorry for the stupid solution.

Discussion at MoS on flag icons[edit]

Please contribute to the discussion on flag icons at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style#Flag icons - manual of style entry?. (SEWilco 14:57, 15 January 2007 (UTC))[reply]

    Problem[edit]

That seems to be a problem when all of the template use in result template, they are unable to display it, is that have any problem?

Example (view edit this page to oriented):

    Semi-finalsFinal

    July 4

     Malaysia 4

     South Korea 1

    --Aleenf1 07:55, 5 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Some edits were made to Template:country flag2 that seemed to break instances where these templates were used inside other templates — perhaps just those that are table-based, such as Template:Round4. I have reverted those edits, so things should be back to normal again. Andrwsc 17:21, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Transnistria[edit]

Is it possible to add a template for Transnistrian Moldova? I know it's a disputed territory, but Wikipedia exists to document rather than judge notable controversy and dispute, and Transnistria (Pridnestrovie) does show up in some lists.Sjeng 06:38, 27 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Just use {{flag|Transnistria}} for  Transnistria. Andrwsc 16:10, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
kosovo has a short code so this and Abkhazia and South Ossetia must have one too.Lihaas (talk) 18:09, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Why "must"? We don't invent three-letter country codes here, just use those in existing practice. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 18:21, 26 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Union of South Africa template ?[edit]

Do we have a template for the 1910-1961 entity and flag ? If not, we need one, because it is incorrect to display the present-day flag and "Republic" in an article dealing with e.g. 1944. I.e. The Republic was the successor state to the Union, but can be treated as a different political entity. In addition, we also need a mechanism for displaying the old Republic flag when we're dealing with events up to the "New South Africa" era, and the current flag from then on. So we really need 3 templates e.g. ZAF for the old Union, ZAR for the apartheid Republic, RSA for the new Republic. Or have I missed something here ? Rcbutcher 11:49, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

These "shortcut" templates are only a subset of all the flag templates available with the standard Template:Flag. Please see Template:Country data South Africa for the historical flags. You would use {{flag|South Africa|1910}} for  South Africa and {{flag|South Africa|1928}} for  South Africa. As for creating new "shortcut" templates with three-letter names, I strongly advise against that. ZAF is the ISO 3166-1 alpha-3 country code for South Africa and RSA is the code used by IOC, and FIFA, so that's why there are two options available for editors. ZAR was never a standard country code for anything. If you really want the wikilink to point to the article at Union of South Africa, the preferred way is to create a new Template:Country data Union of South Africa. (This is a similar method to what was done for previous states of Germany, Japan, etc.) Hope this helps, Andrwsc 16:08, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Problems with Flag Templates[edit]

Something seems to be broken with this - the flags seem to have disappeared for many of these templates.Nigel Ish 15:55, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed this as well, it must have been broken in the last few days and it seems it's specific to short codes that aren't on the ISO list (like ENG and RSA), but these codes are used by many templates and they are either on the IOC (Olympic)orFIFA (Football) lists. Can someone please restore or correct this? --Deon Steyn 07:14, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
There is nothing wrong with these templates. The problem lies with the image server cache. Andrwsc 15:52, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
checkY Yep, everything is working once more... server issues. --Deon Steyn 06:13, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

    Zanzibar[edit]

Please could somebody add "ZNZ" to Zanzibar as a three letter shortcut?

That is not a standard country code. Just use the existing {{flag|Zanzibar}}. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 00:11, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

    Special cases[edit]

Related to Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Flag_Template#Special_cases. I tried to implement XOM and SMOM, but only XOM works. Could somebody correct Template:SMOM?Alinor (talk) 14:51, 19 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Redirects[edit]

Using some country codes that are not listed in the table I have seen these different displays.

    XXX : {{XXX}} {{flagicon|XXX}}

That note about Morocco is useful. Perhaps it can be implemented elsewhere, for Switzerland if Taiwan is too complicated. For flagicon TAI and SWI, am I seeing the operation of redirects?

Does this mean LIT should be listed in the table? --P64 (talk) 22:37, 30 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

    Republic of Kosovo[edit]

Does the Republic of Kosovo not have a template? It's recognized by 86 UN members, has a membership in the IMF, World Bank, etc. -- Khazar (talk) 15:56, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, figured out how to do this from the Transnitria answer above. Cheers, -- Khazar (talk) 15:57, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

    Iceland[edit]

Why is Iceland shortened to ISL instead of ICE? This list uses English names. ICE is unique and easy to relate to, while ISL, although correct based on Icelandic, is generic and similar to Israel. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mango från yttre rymden (talkcontribs) 03:56, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
