DISC REVIEW “METSUTAN – SONGS OF THE VOID”
フィンランドの侍、歌舞伎メタルの求道者 WHISPERED が遥かなる時空を超えて北欧と日本を繋ぐ待望の新作 “Metsutan – Songs of the Void” をリリースしました！！NHKに取り上げられ注目を集めている今、素晴らしいタイミングで2度目の来日も決定し、彼らが最もインスピレーションを受けてきたこの舞台で千両役者へと登り詰める準備は整いました。
WHISPERED ほど日本を前面に押し出して世界的な成功を収めたメタルバンドは、これまでほとんど存在しないと言えます。故に、琴や三味線など和楽器をメインに据え、日本古来のヨナ抜き音階をキャッチーでキラキラのスカンジナビアンメタルの中で大胆に使用。歌舞伎の隈取を施したビジュアルで、日本人でも知らないような深い古の伝承を巧みに表現するフィンランドの侍のやり方は、実に画期的で大きな可能性に満ちていますね。
アルバムはエピカルで壮大なイントロダクション、血のワルツに導かれし一撃必殺の “Strike!” で強烈に幕を開けます。CHILDREN OF BODOM を想起させるスリリングかつメロディックなゴーセンバークスタイルに、三味線をはじめとした和楽器の数々が自然にオーケストレートされ圧倒的な推進力で突き進む “Strike!” の一撃は、リスナーを一瞬で”滅譚”の世界へと連れ去ります。
“Sakura Omen” のシンフォニックなサウンドが生み出す高いドラマ性は、WHISPERED を数多のメロデスバンドたちと分かつ重要な個性です。まさに日本的な”侘び寂び”を理解しているかのような巧みな静と動の対比、荘厳なシンフォニーと激情のアグレッションの応酬は和楽器を組み込んで、桜の花に美しさのみならず儚さや死のイメージをも重ねることに成功しています。
一般的に桜は華やか、ゴージャスというイメージを懐く外国人がほとんどでしょう。しかし、まるで坂口安吾の”桜の森の満開の下”をイメージしたかのような和の情緒を宿す “Sakura Omen” は彼らが小手先だけの日本マニアではないことを証明していますね。
インタビューでも語ってくれたように、日本のゲーム音楽からも強く影響を受けている Jouni。宮本武蔵の決闘をテーマとした “Kensei” には”ロックマン6″や”ロックマン X”のコンポーザー竹原裕子さんへのリスペクトが込められ、メロディーラインがオマージュとして使用されています。古き良き NORTHER や KALMAH の遺伝子とニンテンドーサウンドが見事にマッチした “Oriental-core” とも呼べるキラーチューンは、武士道に込められた想いと共にアルバムを代表する楽曲として強い輝きを放っています。
WHISPERED の作品は常にエピカルな10分を超える大曲で幕を閉じます。今回、彼らがそのテーマに選んだのが”江島縁起”でした。アートワークにも描かれる、江ノ島の起源に纏わる五頭龍の伝説をコンセプトとした “Bloodred Shores of Enoshima” は5部構成11分22秒の恋愛劇。美しき天女、弁財天に魅せられ悔い改めた五頭龍の物語を WINTERSUN が “Time I” で見せたような圧倒的構成力とシンフォニーでシアトリカルに現代へと再現しています。
アルバムを通して、壮大なオーケストレーションの中、ダブルギターと和楽器が影となり日向となりメインテーマとカウンターメロディーを行き来することで、作品には並々ならぬ立体感が生まれています。その立体感が極上のサウンドスケープをもたらした “Bloodred Shores of Enoshima” は、五頭龍が姿を変えた龍口山と弁財天が奉られる江ノ島の姿を描きながらも、同時に WHISPERED の中にある日本と北欧の姿をも一遍の曇りもなく露わにしているのです。
今回弊誌では、バンド唯一のオリジナルメンバーとなったギター/ボーカル Jouni Valjakka にインタビューを行うことが出来ました。来日は以前弊誌がインタビューを行った INSOMNIUM と5月！どうぞ！！

Q1: Do you know Whispered is becoming a big issue even in Japan. You know, It was big surprise for us that NHK (Public TV Station in Japan) featured Whispered. Anyway, your second Japan Tour is just announced! How do you feel now?
︻JOUNI︼: Of course we all are really hyped!
Contact from NHK was truly a nice surprise and to announce the Japan tour at this point is amazing. It’s great to have a chance to play again in the land of our main inspiration.
Q1: WHISPERED が日本で大きな話題となっていることはご存知でしたか？NHK で取り上げられたのは本当に驚きでしたよ！
このタイミングで2度目の日本ツアーが決まりましたね。今はどういったお気持ちですか？
︻JOUNI︼: 勿論、全員が本当に興奮しているよ！NHK からのコンタクトは実に素敵なサプライズだったね。このタイミングで日本ツアーをアナウンス出来るなんて最高だよね。
僕たちの主なインスピレーションの源である場所で、またプレイ出来るんだから素晴らしいことだよ。
Q2: Whispered is known as Kabuki Metal. From your song, lyrics, it seems that you’re the mania of Japanese culture and history. But, what inspired you to be into Japan?
︻JOUNI︼: As genres go, Kabuki Metal sounds probably the coolest! We don’t take genres too seriously. Japanese culture has been really interesting concept for me a very long time, and combining my passion for Japan and metal, Whispered was born really naturally. First it was japanese games (and awesome music in them!), then samurai, yokai, traditional japanese instruments, ghost stories and things like that.
Q2: WHISPERED は歌舞伎メタルとして知られています。バンドの楽曲、歌詞、コンセプトからはかなりの日本通であることが伺えますが、何がきっかけで日本の文化や歴史にのめり込んだのでしょうか？
︻JOUNI︼: ジャンルの話だけど、歌舞伎メタルって響きは最高にクールだね！まあ僕たちはジャンルについてあまりシリアスには考えていないんだけどね。
日本の文化は僕にとって、長い間実に興味深いコンセプトだったんだ。だから僕が持つ日本とメタルという2つの情熱を融合させて WHISPERED が誕生したのはあまりに自然なことだったのさ。
日本にのめり込んだきっかけは、ゲームとその素晴らしいサウンドトラックだったね。そこから、侍、妖怪、日本の伝統楽器、怪談なんかにハマっていったんだ。
Q3: Kabuki face paint is the symbol of Whispered. What made you start that kind of visual?
︻JOUNI︼: Traditional kumadori (with some of our own touch) just came from the idea that we thought our music deserves a theatrical aspect. Kabuki as an artform is full of drama / pompous things which really suit metal as well. Some people have called kumadori “japanese corpse paint” which shows that even if you don’t know what’s going on, it has the right impact!
Q3: 歌舞伎のメイクは WHISPERED のトレードマークだと言えます。こういったビジュアルを始めたのはなぜですか？
︻JOUNI︼: 僕たち自身のテイストもいくらかは入っているんだけど、伝統的な隈取を施すというアイデアは、僕たちのシアトリカルな要素を含んだ音楽性に合うと思ったからなんだ。歌舞伎という芸術形態は大仰なドラマ仕立てになっていて、本当にメタルにも良くフィットするんだよ。
隈取を見た人が”ジャパニーズコープスペイント”なんて呼ぶことがあるんだけど、それはすなわち、歌舞伎について知らなくても正しいインパクトを与えているってことだよね。
Q4: Anyway, your newest album “Metsutan-Songs of the Void” was released in last year! At first, could you tell us about the title, concept of the album? From “Kensei”, “Strike!”, I feel you are influenced by Katana, Sword, Bushi. Do you agree that?
︻JOUNI︼: Well as the name states “Metsutan” which roughly translates “destruction / mayhem verses”, the album very much deals with different concepts of death.
Honor, dishonor, becoming stronger in life, facing yourself not fearing to die are in the texts among mythology. Nevertheless, it’s not a concept album.
Bushido with its values has always been present in Whispered’s lyrics so songs about the sword are inevitable!
Q4: では昨年リリースされた最新作 “Metsutan-Songs of the Void” について話しましょう。
まずは作品のコンセプトや歌詞のテーマについて教えていただけますか？”Kensei”, “Strike!” からは武士道に繋がりもありそうですが。
︻JOUNI︼: まず “Metsutan” というアルバムのタイトルだけど、大まかに訳すと破壊、混沌、暴力といった意味になるんだ。つまりアルバムは、様々なコンセプトの死について扱っている訳さ。
名誉、不名誉、より強く生きること、死を恐れないこと。そういった題材を神話の中に織り込んで扱っているんだよ。ただ、コンセプトアルバムではないんだけどね。
武士道は、常に WHISPERED の歌詞の中に存在する価値観なんだ。だから刀についての楽曲を作るのは避けがたいことなんだよ！
Q5: Your long time partner, Pyrypekka Ruponen left the band. So, you are only original member left. How have it changed the writing process, and band itself from Shogunate Macabre?
︻JOUNI︼: I’ve always written the songs mainly myself with final touches and suggestions from the other guys.
Right know I think we’re in a place that all members of the band are involved in the song making process more than ever before.
Q5: 長年パートナーだった Pyrypekka Ruponen がバンドを離れましたね。つまりオリジナルメンバーはあなた1人になりました。そこから生じたライティングプロセスの変化について教えてください。
︻JOUNI︼: 楽曲は主にいつも僕が1人で書いて来たんだ。他のメンバーは最後に手を入れてアイデアを提案するくらいだったかな。
だけど今は、バンドのメンバー全員が、以前より楽曲のライティングプロセスに関わるべき時に来ていると思っているよ。
Q6: “Metsutan-Songs of the Void” is the most Japanese taste album in your works, I think. “Syamisen”, “Fue” is really effective in the album. So, how do you feel about the mixing melodic death metal and Japanese traditional instruments? Did you think it goes well from the beginning?
︻JOUNI︼: We still have much to learn about the japanese traditional instruments, but I think we’ve gotten better hold of the arrangements since we started. When you’re working in the world of sampled instruments, it’s easy to get carried away with everything that could or in this case, couldn’t be done. Therefore we think the best results come from a more authentic approach and of course using real instruments, which are really hard to come by in Finland. Not to mention skilled musicians using those instruments, which we couldn’t probably even afford. We have some played shamisen and flute sections in the albums.
Q6: “Metsutan” は WHISPERED の作品の中でも、最も日本色が濃いアルバムだと感じました。日本の伝統楽器が実に効果的に使用されていますね。メロディックデスメタルと、日本古来の楽器がここまで見事に融合するとは驚きです。
︻JOUNI︼: 僕たちは今でも日本の伝統楽器について多くを学んでいる途中なんだ。ただ始めた時よりは徐々に良いアレンジメントを施せるようになってきたと思うよ。
勿論、世界にはサンプル音源が溢れているから、全てをそれで対処することも簡単な訳だけど、僕たちはよりオーセンティックなアプローチで当然本物の楽器を使用することで、最高の結果が生まれると思うんだ。
フィンランドで日本の伝統楽器を手に入れるのは本当に大変なんだけどね。言うまでもなく、そういった楽曲に習熟したミュージシャンを見つけるのも難しいよ。例え見つかったとしても、僕たちに雇えるような余裕はないだろうな。だからメンバーの誰かがアルバムの三味線や笛をプレイしているんだよ。
Q7: It is written that “Mighty Final Melody in Kensei by Yuko Takehara” in the album. Off course, she is composer of the soundtrack of Megaman series. Do you think you are influenced by Japanese game or it’s soundtracks?
︻JOUNI︼: Japanese game soundtracks have always been a huge influence of mine among many other things.
The sense of melody in that field just keeps astonishing me. I’ve listened all kind of japanese game music from early classics to modern works and I still think the best game music comes from Japan.
That particular melody is a homage to one of Takehara’s works. Points to anyone who can recognize the reference!
Q7: アルバムにはゲーム”ロックマン”シリーズなどのコンポーザーである竹原裕子さんに捧げられた一文が存在します。やはり日本のゲームミュージックからの影響は大きいようですね？
︻JOUNI︼: 日本のゲームのサウンドトラックは、他の何よりも僕に大きな影響を与えているんだ。
そのメロディーセンスには常に感嘆させられ続けているよ。
初期のクラッシックからモダンなものまで、日本のゲーム音楽ならありとあらゆるものを聴いてきたね。今でも最高のゲームミュージックは日本から生まれていると信じているんだ。
今回、あるメロディーが竹原さんへのオマージュとなっているよ。もしそれが分かって言及出来る人がいたら、ぜひ指摘して欲しいな！
Q8: Whispered always close the album with over ten minutes long epic song. “Bloodred Shores of Enoshima” is the song about the origin of Enoshima. Why did you focus on it?
︻JOUNI︼: When I started to write the song, I actually didn’t have any clue what it could be about. At the middle of the writing process I was hugely inspired by the enoshima engi, and the story got a full grip of the song. And the story has everything metal could hope for : dragons, a goddess, fear, love and celestial events of epic proportions! The song is overall most challenging thing we’ve ever done and I think the story deserved no less.
Q8: WHISPERED の作品は全て大曲で幕を閉じます。今作の “Bloodred Shores of Enoshima” は江ノ島の起源についての楽曲ですよね？
︻JOUNI︼: この曲を書き始めた時、僕はそれが何についての曲になるのか全く分からなかったんだ。でもライティングプロセスの途中で、江島縁起に大いに影響されてね。そのストーリーは完全に楽曲へと乗り移ったんだ。
ドラゴン、神仏、恐怖、愛、そしてエピカルで神聖な出来事。江島縁起にはメタルが求めるもの全てが含まれていたね！この楽曲は今までで一番チャレンジングだったよ。ストーリーに相応しいものが出来たと思う。

The first heavy metal album I really listened to and it blew me away. How can guitar sound that good!

This album really got me into melodic death metal and the melodies are insanely good.
MOONSORROW “KIVENKANTAJA”
I could probably put any Moonsorrow album here and I really think that Moonsorrow is what great folk-influenced metal is all about.
FINAL FANTASY Ⅶ OST
I think this is one of Nobuo Uematsu’s best works and the soundtrack made a huge impact on me when I was just a kid.
