This week sees the opening of a new exhibition, 'Lee Kuan Yew and Fitzwilliam' at Fitzwilliam College, curated by Dr John Cleaver, College Archivist.
Lee Kuan Yew, who was to be the founding father of Singapore as an independent state and its first Prime Minister, was born a century ago.
After excellent school results, Lee began his university studies at Raffles College. These came to an end in 1942 with the Japanese invasion of Singapore – indeed, Lee was fortunate to survive, as many young Chinese men were massacred. After the war, he was determined to continue his education in England, and specifically at Fitzwilliam House. He matriculated in 1947.
Lee was highly determined and was highly successful academically, emerging top of the Law Tripos in 1949 – and another first-class student in the same list was Kwa Goek Choo, whom he had married in secret in 1947.
The exhibition covers the first half-century of Lee’s life, ending when Singapore had been established but at a time when its progression from third-world territory to highly-advanced first-world state was still in its early stages. Other members of the Singaporean community at Fitzwilliam in that era are included.
Particularly interesting is the text of a letter from Lee to W.S. Thatcher at Fitzwilliam House in 1952, discussing the deteriorating political and mishandled security situation in late-colonial Malaya – and world geopolitics more generally. Another is the text of East and West – the twain have met, which was the Fitzwilliam College Foundation Lecture that Lee gave in 1971.
The exhibition, which is derived from one in Singapore in January and visited by Lee Hsien Loong (Lee’s son, and recent Prime Minister of Singapore), will be on display in the Norman Pounds Room in the Olisa Library from Monday 10 June. TONIGHT: How to Get a Job in Academia, 6-7pm, Gordon Cameron
Postgraduate career advisor Kate Murray will be joined by ECRs Dr Ben Wiedemann and Dr Itai Massad to discuss the options for those wishing to pursue a career in academia, covering everything from applying for postdocs, grant applications and the potential career paths both within and outside academia. Open to all - whether you're studying for your undergrad and curious to know more, or final year PhD and wondering what to do next.
In this session Dr Ben Wiedemann, Dr Gabriel Duckels, Dr Caitlin Harvey and Dr Anke Ardern Arentsen will take you step-by-step through the process of getting your first journal article published – no question is too basic!
The session will cover: choosing which journal to approach, writing and editing the article, and going through the peer review process. Open to all undergraduates and postgraduates (and all Hills Colleges).
