Attached to: Anthropic's $200M Pentagon Contract at Risk Over Objections to Domestic Surveillance, Autonomous Deployments
I was evaluating AI coding assistants for my company a while ago, and of course Claude Code was on my shortlist. But after discussing Anthropic's collaborating with the fascist US regime, our company decided to practice economic withdrawal and take our money to a European supplier.

Exactly. That's why I didn't vote for {Trump, Biden, Obama, Clinton, Bush JR, Bush SR}. /s
We have to go back to Reagan to find someone who had any form of morals and ethics, didn't cheat on his wife, didn't abuse drugs, didn't steal, didn't molesting kids, and a whole host of other things. It's unclear if Bush SR cheated on his wife, it's only rumors but he ran the CIA so he must've done something super ugly, likely many things.
Ford seemed to be a straight shooter. Nixon wasn't the cheat on wife type but clearly had other issues. Johnson was a scumbag in many ways and then oh... the entire Kennedy family. Cheating, murder, rape, drugs, the works... Jfc.
If you want ethical and moral leaders, good luck. It's very rare and party has little/nothing to do with it. The political system almost requires our leaders be scumbags because nice guys get crushed.

Attached to: Five French Ubisoft Unions Call For Massive International Strike Over 'Cost-Cutting' and Ending of Remote Work
If the French offices actually produced anything of value higher than their costs they wouldn't need to call for the rest of the globe to go on strike to support their petty local demands.
I've had to deal with my company's golden boy Paris development office. Lazy, arrogant, snotty, superior, incompetent, demanding babies who literally produced -nothing- over the course of three years trying to work with them. Lots of talk. No code.
The entire Paris office got shutdown after a $45 million loss. Money completely pissed away on French developers.
Worse than useless. Negative value.
Ubisoft management would be thrilled if the French office all went on unpaid strike. It's the only way Ubisoft can reduce the economic damage of having a French office.
If they're smart they'll do what my company eventually did; suck it up, pay off these losers, write it off and never make the mistake of hiring French again.
This isn't a union/management issue. This is a "we made the critical error of hiring French people" problem.

There's going to be a fuck ton of empty data center space after the AI crunch.
Someone will have to come up with some new fotw tech to suck up all the VC money to fill that space.
And the price for space/power is going to be dirt cheap with all the over building. You'd think one of these people could use an AI to figure out how fucking overbuilt and overhyped AI is, if AI was capable of a fraction of what they claim.

Attached to: One-Third of US Video Game Industry Workers Were Laid Off Over the Last Two Years, GDC Study Reveals
Back in the day i was told by -everyone- during the interview at the once-famous but now-dead game company said on the same cultist droning voice, "It's so cool to work at a video game company!"
EA bought what was left of them after they killed their company trying to make their extremely popular single player game into a subscription based online multiplayer game and failing.
It was really creepy how every single staffer, the manager, the HR woman, the VP running the division, everyone except for one senior dev who was new repeated the mantra like a smiling zombie.
Yes I got an offer, no I wasn't going to take a 50% pay cut because it's so cool to work at a video game company.
As far as 30% getting laid off in the last 2 years... so what? What's the typical layoff rate? The studio model guarantees that people in the gaming vertical get laid off often. They spin up a studio to make a game, the push the slop out the door, they fire everyone but a skeleton crew to make the patch, then hire a new crew for the next slop version. It's how it works. Anyone who wants a stable career would not go into gaming. I was about 5 years at one game company which is really unusual. People would comment on that in interviews later at other companies.
Oh wait, sorry, I'm off narrative. If it wasn't for AI then the layoff rate would be 3% and with unions everyone would keep their job forever with a pension and the games would be great and the industry much more successful.

It was a crap movie but had some good predictions about where tech could go in the future. Except that future is now staring us in the face.
I'm not sure how the SAG union could demand money from a studio if they made a movie with all AI 'actors' and no humans on screen.

I'll bet anything that Waymo does not take into account things like children walking by on the sidewalk outside the current flow of traffic and can't 'know' that a child is 99% likely to chase that ball as it bounces into the street into oncoming traffic.
I await your evidence that Waymo has -any- capabilities even remotely like this.
When you fail to find such, because it isn't true, I expect you to come back to let us know. Because of course you'd do that, right?
If they had such capabilities they'd be yelling loudly about them every day.
Their robot hit a kid. Me, a human being, capable of understanding the real world and able to predict the future based on context and not just react to what's already in front of me did not hit a kid.
Never ceases to amaze me how many people so desperately want to yield the world to k-mega corps because somehow Google is better at it than real human beings who give a shit about running over kids. Robots are fine until something bad happens then everyone involved is fucked because they're stupid reaction systems with no brains or sense. In my engineering classes decades ago we built toy car robots to navigate a maze as the semester class project. Waymo is just the adult version of my junior level engineering project. And that's what so many of you want on the road managing multi ton vehicles. Jfc....
TLDR: Waymo hit the kid. Human did not hit the kid.

I've been in that situation except I didn't hit the kid.
I was on my way home at night after a long commute, on the last 2 blocks from home in my neighborhood.
I saw a young couple with a small child on the sidewalk; she was playing with a ball on their walk. The ball bounced sideways into the street between two cars, the girl ran after her ball oblivious to the danger of my oncoming car.
It was like a Hollywood movie scene in slow-motion. Parents with wide eyes looking at my car, dad yells at kid, kid ignores dad chasing ball, ball goes flying out in front of my car, kid right behind ball....
But because I'm a person and not a robot, the moment I saw the ball disappear and the child vanished from the sidewalk I slammed on my brakes.
Ball continued rolling by, child caught up to ball and returned safely to sidewalk with parents, I left some brake pad and rubber behind, my ABS thumping hard n loud. Stopped 2 feet before her.
Child not hit. Never had a clue she was in danger.
When robots are capable of understanding context, lemme know. Until then we'll continue praising them for not hitting kids hard enough to kill or cripple them, I guess.

I take my vote very seriously. Maybe Canada should, too. Their track record for serious leadership is rather poor.
2016 is the only election I stayed home. Trump was a non-serious vanity candidate and Hillary was a criminal. I do not ever vote for lesser evils or I would have voted Trump. After 4 years I was quite happy to vote for him in 2020 and am thrilled with most of the current administration. We now have a border. Europe has decided to pay for their own defense for the first time in decades. The economy is headed in the right direction. Inflation has come down to normal healthy levels. Crime is super down. Blatantly unconstitutional DEI shit is getting flushed from tax payer funded programs. Corruption and theft is being rooted out and exposed. What's the problem?
You know that famous Ronald Reagan line, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"? He wasn't supposed to say it. It was cut from the original speech final draft. His advisors all told him it was too much, too controversial. Reagan was a war mongering insane and stupid cowboy actor who was going to get us all killed in the nuclear glow of ww3. Been hearing the let say the exact same things about every non-left politician since the dawn of time. Boring. Repetitive. Propaganda.
You're so concerned about what Presidents say and decorum and blah blah blah. Great. How much of the crazy shit Biden and Obama said bothered you? Or the other two multi time losers, Hilary and Kamala? Both are on record saying all sorts of crazy ass and dumb shit. If you're American I'll get you votes for both proudly, and with no concerns that some chuckle head word salad moron like Kamala came so close to being President. So, enough with the fake tears about decorum and how Presidents should act and what they should say. You got no problem when people on the left say wild shit. It's all a bit virtue signal game and fake.

You meant to say that when the junior partners in an alliance act like entitled cunts and get bitch slapped for it, Orange Daddy is the bad guy.
The 51st state comment was funny and if our poutine loving neighbors to the north can't take a joke because their leaders are cry babies then they are welcome to go be Pooh Bear's Bitch and find out what it's like to be the junior partner to an honest to god authoritarian regime that murders its own people every day instead of the made up conspiracy Orange Man Bad fantasies CNN pushes.
My Canadian relatives are split. My MIL has CNN on 24/7 and thinks Trump eats the still beating hearts of brown lgbtqs++ babies for breakfast, whereas my BIL is waiting for his youngest to graduate high school so he can escape the country for saner waters. So, to be fair, they're not all cry baby entitled ignorant CNN fed cunts.
As far as the UK goes, it's already most of the way to be an Islamic controlled dhimmi state with no hope in sight of directional change. The real Brits who love having any form of free speech or freedom in general should pack up and go asap before it gets any worse. That frog is boiling hot. Europe in general is in deep shit but few countries are as dhimmi fucked as the UK.
Alliances require your allies to act like allies which has been fraying since long before Trump came along. History did not start in 2016.
