Attached to: AI Use at Work Has Increased, Gallup Poll Finds
That's what I was wondering. Are employees doing it to trick their managers into believing that they're being more productive, or are they using it as a part of a corporate drive towards using more AI? If it's the latter, then sooner or later, those people will be gone, b'cos their work can just as easily be done by AI
A few days ago, I was watching a clip of a person who claimed to have written scripts that ends up in him only having to work one hour a day, rather than eight. A recruiter who played this script warned the readers that employers are looking to pull off such feats as well, so that they can let go of the person they have to pay, and just have scripts do all the work. That's what this increased AI usage at work will result in - most of the people being let go. It is a propaganda claim that those employees will be repurposed into more creative/productive tasks, but there is no reason why that work too couldn't be done by AI

From a business POV, Apple's fortunes turned for the better when they transformed from a "weird" option to the luxury option. Once they polished the brand so that it became the computer equivalent of porsches and guccis, that was when the cash started flowing in. One can hardly fault them for going that route, when one option drove them towards bankruptcy, while the other made them a trillion dollar company that then went on to diversify into media
I do agree w/ the GP, though. Before Steve's return and OS-X, macs were very configurable, and that was b'cos the OS had simple ways to update the configuration once changes were made. Something that's not the case w/ Unix, where the kernel would need to be rebuilt. But even factoring that in, the lack of configurability of current macs in favor of making them look sleeker is not doing customers any favors. There are quite a few things that need to change. For instance, for iPhones, instead of making iCloud the only cloud synchronization platform, allow users to enter an alternate cloud URL - even a home solution - to let them utilize the full capabilities of their phones and other devices, rather than being dependent on just Apple, that gives one a measley 5GB iCloud storage, no matter how much of storage the macs, iPhones and iPads have

Serious people have real work to do, and don't have the luxury of obsessing about the FSF's "software freedoms" the way opinionated computer activists do. They need computers that work right out of the box, and has the software they are familiar w/, or the software that their employers require them to use

I was referring to at the start of the trip. If I wanted to navigate home, I'd first - before I set off - set the navigation and everything, and then start driving. In b/w, if I were to get a phone call, I'd use the controls on the steering wheel to pick up and disconnect the calls, and my phone is also set to automatically send a response if I get a text. At any rate, I don't have voice commands enabled on it
Other than that, the only time my right hand goes off the steering (the left hand still has it) is if I want to rewind a bit the podcast I'm listening to. I try to do that only at traffic stops

On one hand, that's true, but on the other, they're trying to colonize the entire world using their belt/road scam

The western world didn't outsource squat. These drug cartels in these countries are local - manned by locals. That area is known as the Golden Triangle for being the hub of opium trade historically, and who knows what narcs these days. They didn't need any Western influence to engage in this trade

The strange thing about this story is that Myanmar's army is only recognized by Beijing. The previous regime led by Ahn San Su Kyi generally had broad support worldwide, but particularly from India. Whereas after she was toppled, Myanmar is a failed state, and there are separatist rebels who have also caused an insurrection in North East India
Given that, it's rather strange that the Myanmar military is not at the beck & call of Beijing

Somehow, the Chinese, and other countries that have it, seem to have discovered otherwise

It's too cold right now. We need global warming: it just has to happen at the right places - northern US and Canada, Russia, Scandinavia, Greenland and Iceland. While somehow not happening in tropical or equatorial regions. If the Arctic icecaps melt, it should overall dilute sea water, and make it easier for countries that process sea water for their water needs

Ozone was always going to recover, courtesy the sun. Anyone who has done high school chemistry would remember how subjecting oxygen to a constant stream of UV light ends up converting it into ozone. Well, guess what happens in the ionosphere: precisely that! We couldn't destroy the ozone even if we wanted to

I'm not sure about the extent it could be done on their current macbooks or iPads, but they should certainly do this on the mac pros - the cheesegraters. Give people the option of which CPU, how much RAM and SSD (please use standard interfaces) and a choice of a few Nvidia and AMD GPUs, aside from Apple's own. Oh, and also how many ports of each type - Thunderbolt, RJ-45, HDMI and so on
I really wish they had something like this for the Mac Pro 6, which was the "trashcan" Mac they had in 2013. I have been looking for one recently, that is topped off, since upgrading them, particularly the GPUs, was a pain. I'm looking for something that has a top of the line parts for everything - 128GB DDR3 RAM, 2TB SSD, 12 core Xeon, D700 and then on that, put a type 1 hypervisor. Then on top of that, have a handful of OSs - OpenBSD (for a built-in firewall & router, and a separate instance for Tor), FreeBSD, OS-X Mojave (for an iPod I need to manage), Kali Linux, Windows 7 as well as some fringe OSs - OS/2 or ArcaOS, KolibriOS, and maybe others. Some of them won't be connected to the internet, while I'd just use the FreeBSD and Kali for accessing things online

Invented it sure, but then abandoned it after Steve's return to the company. Probably b'cos NEXTSTEP was nothing remotely close to System 8: there was no plug 'n' play. So if you swapped out a card and then turned the system back on, it would have had issues recognizing the hardware

You are talking about the Apple Computers company that was there from the beginning up to Gil Amelio. After Steve's return to the company, that all went away. But prior to that, there were all sorts of add-ons that one could add to one's mac to make it as custom as possible: in fact, that Apple was something like Framework Computers is today
It would be nice of Apple to bring back that sort of functionality. Allow people to determine which CPU, how much RAM and upgrade space they need, how much storage, and maybe a limited choice of GPU options (including Nvidia). Only thing about that: unlike that earlier Apple, these would have to be done at factory, since first configuring them and then installing macOS on them won't be trivial
