Baseless claims

edit

"The giveaway caused a riot in Union Square Park, in which thousands of people engaged in a state of civil unrest during the time of the giveaway."

There were only 2000-5000 people present. How the fuck do you get 40-100%+ of a crowd to engage in civil unrest? Claiming that anyone present at a gathering where civil unrest occurs is automatically engaged in the unrest seems absurd, especially given this was a legal gathering with no known calls for violence by the organizers. Even if we assume that the !!!one thousand!!! police are included in that civil unrest, that's still only 3000-6000 people. Claiming that 33-100% were in a state of civil unrest seems very dubious unless the organizers or crowd were some kind of revolutionaries or whatnot.

This article seems like it was written by the NYPD or by a government that bans free assembly, essentially assuming anyone who goes to an event organized by a popular Twitch streamer: A popular *black* Twitch streamer at that, is *automatically* a rioter rather than an innocent civilian caught in a rowdy crowd, though it seems like this is not more rowdy than the aftermath of an average soccer game in many countries. It should be entirely obvious why claiming over half the people there were rioting needs better sourcing. 50.38.32.222 (talk) 08:54, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Changed a few sections to sound less like a everyone present was guilty by association. 50.38.32.222 (talk) 09:21, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

"Riot" should be changed to a more suitable word/phrase in the article

edit

Calling it a "Riot" is contentious at the moment. While there was certainly unrest, I think the word riot should be changed to something like "Mob" or "UnnSquare Unrest" io for the time being as there are only charges and no prosecutions at the moment.

Edit: Will edit myself if there is no disagreement.

Rayanblaq14 (talk) 13:10, 5 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Go with what the sources say. All the sources are calling it a riot. Nobody seems to be calling it "unrest". Databased (talk) 12:08, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

I looked at several of the sources and none of them referred to the event as a "riot". I would suspect for the same reason as OP -- "riot" is charged terminology and not particularly neutral. I think "Unrest" would be a more preferable, neutral description. Alexwennerberg (talk) 20:13, 10 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Good Article Status

edit

Now that the dust has settled on the AfD, anyone interested in bringing this article up to Good Article status? It probably will take a while based on the ensuing aftermath and coverage of his trial, but I think it's a good idea to look ahead and plan for it in advance. PantheonRadiance (talk) 19:55, 12 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

I have considered it, but don't count on it. I don't actively seek GAs until I am positive an article is the best it could be. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 19:33, 13 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough. There's no deadline but I think this could make for a decent DYK nom in the future if anyone wants to bring it to GA. In the meantime, it would definitely be more beneficial to focus on just maintaining the article, especially within the next few days. Thanks, PantheonRadiance (talk) 09:00, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Should we nominate it right now? 199.216.45.1 (talk) 19:19, 25 September 2023 (UTC)Reply

Requested move 13 August 2023

edit
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: moved. Clear consensus to move. If anyone objects to my close I will revert it, as I could appear to be involved based on my previous nomination of this article for deletion, but I think consensus is sufficiently clear here (unanimous and well attended) that I can close it without issue. Kai Cenat Union Square giveaway2023 Union Square riot – The current name is what remained after the dust settled on a slightly convoluted AfD involving two articles. The problem is, this is an overly long, difficult to search for, slightly defamatory, and not-quite-backed-up-by-the-search-results kind of title. Titles should be WP:CONCISE, with the least amount of words employed to identify the event. This event is more known for the disturbance aspect than for the "giveaway" which served as the catalyst for it, and that is what people will search for. If Cenat ever does another giveaway without incident, no article will be written about it. Attaching Cenat's name to the incident seems unfair when we can simply associate it with the location in which it took place, especially if the extent of Cenat's intent to actually spark a riot is unclear. Finally, Kai Cenat Union Square giveaway gets slightly over 1M Google hits, vs a whopping 264M for Union Square riot. See for example, YouTube Streamer Faces Riot Charge After Union Square Park Erupts in Chaos, Melee in Union Square Shows the Real Power Of Popular Influencers, Union Square riot charges: NYPD: Streamer incited crowd that became violent, NYPD chief on Union Square Riot over PlayStation Giveaway, Twitch Streamer Kai Cenat charged over Union Square Riot. Support per WP:CONCISE and WP:COMMONNAME. This is definitely the strongest evidence for a proposal I've seen in a long time. estar8806 (talk) 14:09, 13 August 2023 (UTC)Reply
Support, well-reasoned proposal. Both WP:CONCISE and WP:COMMONNAME apply and support the proposed new title. I don't see any real defamation concern, but the proposal remains sound when disregarding that. Actualcpscm scrutinize, talk 10:07, 14 August 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I'm Spintendo, and I'll be conducting this review. The Discussion section below is where we'll have most of our interactions. (I'm using the {{Fake heading}} template to preserve the integrity of the review and to minimize disruption to the transcluded table of contents which appears on the article's talk page.) I've divided the discussion section into subsections based on the headers from the article. Please feel free to place "done" or "fixed" -type comments, objections, or counter-proposals in each section for the issues I'll be bringing up there. This is good information but let's hold off on adding it. The information about the subway and the square needs some slight paraphrasing (I can take care of that) and a source (I got that too) then we can add it.  Spintendo  08:08, 11 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
Spintendo, I can't find any reliable sources about the ease of the transportation of a large amount of people to the square. — Davest3r08 >:) (talk) 15:50, 11 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

In a live stream on August 2, he claimed that he would give away gift cards, headphones, gaming chairs, computers, webcams, keyboards, and microphones to attendees who could correctly answer questions about YouTube and live streaming.

Would it be suitable to reword "YouTube and live streaming" to "Internet culture" as YouTube and livestreaming usually fall under that umbrella? — Davest3r08 >:) (talk) 15:55, 11 December 2023 (UTC)Reply
The source for the ease of transport is here.[2] There is also Cenat himself: "Mr. Cenat, who is from the Bronx, told his Twitch followers on Wednesday that he would be in Union Square on Friday. He asked how many fans would show up. A flurry of answers came in: 1,000, 5,000, 10,000. A friend sitting next to him said so many would come that Mr. Cenat would need security and barricades. “All trains go here so there’s no excuse,” Mr. Cenat told those watching."[3]  Spintendo  20:47, 11 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

  • Wednesday, August 2nd, Kai Cenat's Instagram story announces a giveaway to start at Union Square Park on Friday, August 4 at 4 p.m.
  • Friday, August 4th 12:00 p.m. Cenat repeats messages on instagram and twitch.
  • 1:30 p.m., NYPD starts to became aware of a large crowd (around 300 or so) of teens assembling in Union Square
  • By 3 p.m., that number has grown exponentially, as the giveaway goes viral and thousands began arriving in Union Square. The park was soon filled with people obstructing traffic
  • Around 3:30, the crowd begins taking down barriers and throwing objects at police. People also jumped on cars as unrest grew.
  • At 3:48 p.m. the New York Police Department says on X,"Due to police activity, avoid the area surrounding Union Square Park & use alternate routes. Expect a police presence in the area and residual traffic delays."
  • 3:50 p.m., a large police bus moves into position at the square, which will later begin filling up with arrests.
  • 4:00 p.m., Cenat arrives. During a short stream inside his vehicle, Cenat flashes a fistful of what he says are $100 gift cards stored in a brown CVS paper bag to give away. When he notices the chaos, his descriptions immediately take an ominous tone: "They're throwing tear gas out there, we're not going to do nothing until it's safe . . . everybody for themselves, because it's a war out there man."
  • Seconds later, Cenat's vehicle comes to a stop and he exits, but is immediately swarmed by fans. The stream cuts out shortly after Cenat's bodyguards begin pushing people away from him. Law enforcement eventually remove Cenat from the park for safety reasons. He is not officially placed "in custody" at that time, and is free to leave.
  • With Cenat now gone (along with, presumably, all the gift cards as well as any hoped for PS5's) the crowd's frustration peaks from roughly 4:15 - 4:55 p.m., and the riot is in full swing, encompassing food vendor carts being upset and bottles thrown. The misuse of the aforementioned construction equipment occurs during the next 40 minutes. Arrested individuals are placed on the bus while the bus itself becomes the target of projectiles.
  • By 5 p.m., police, some on horseback, have finally organized enough that they begin making coordinated inroads into segregating and dispersing the crowd. This largely takes place over the course of the next hour.
  • As it grows closer to 6 p.m., police have pushed much of the crowd well out of the park.[4][5][6]
