The most common use of this term is "geo-fence" not "geofence." This article uses erroneous nomenclature. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.226.104.225 (talk) 16:58, 11 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I am ready to edit the article to change all instances of "geo-fence" to "geofence". This word has been quite common in civil engineering - especially GIS-related - for over 2 decades (Google Books will show you that). It is quite common in the English language to eventually drop the hyphen in a previously hyphenated word. For example, the word "ink-well" was broadly-adopted after 1840, peaked around 1900, and declined substantially through 1940. This is because the non-hyphenated "inkwell" took off after 1900, and continues to be the dominate spelling. With geofence, while both spellings have been increasing in usage since roughly 2000, "geofence" is quite dominant over "geo-fence". Having said all of that, I believe readers of this article could benefit from having a consistent representation of the word throughout rather than having every other word spelled differently.[1]

It looks like it was started with the correct title, then the term in the article was changed to the wrong spelling (with the hyphen), then at some point someone moved the title to match the spelling in the article. Now that the spelling in the article has been changed, this term needs to be moved back to the correct spelling, geofence. Coolcaesar (talk) 13:55, 5 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Geo-fence → Geofence – per previous ngram results and discussion. also possibility of using gerundive form instead (i.e., Geofencing) by suggestion of Ahecht. Tule-hog (talk) 23:01, 21 July 2024 (UTC) This is a contested technical request (permalink). Tule-hog (talk) 02:35, 22 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
I don't see any reason not to move back to "Geofence". Vacosea (talk) 22:30, 22 July 2024 (UTC)Reply
