It takes place in Elizabethan England with many scenes set in Kenilworth CastleinWarwickshire. An earlier theatrical adaptation of the novel was written in 1821 Kenilworth while a later version Amy RobsartbyAndrew Halliday premiered at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane in 1870.

It was Hugo's first play to be staged, but its first run in Paris closed after only one night.[2] The costumes were designed by the artist Eugène Delacroix.[3] The libretto of the 1829 opera Il castello di KenilworthbyGaetano Donizetti, drew from Hugo's version of the story.
