Beijing National Day School (BNDS; 北京市十一学校; 'Beijing City Ten One School') is a city-district public secondary schoolinHaidian, Beijing, China. The school is supervised by the Beijing City Haidian District Education Committee.[1] The "national day" in the school name refers to the public holiday "October 1st" in its Chinese name. BNDS is one of the top public high schools in China.

BNDS provides four curricula for students: AP, IB DP, A-Level[2] and CNCC(Chinese National Compulsory Curriculum).[3]

History[edit]

The school was formerly the New Beijing Ten One Primary School (北京十一小学) established in 1952 and was renamed Beijing City Ten One School in 1962.[4]

The school started to implement the public-owned and private-run model in 1993. In 2009, the school returned to public-run.[4]

In 2013, the school's international program received International Baccalaureate accreditation.[5]

Facilities[edit]

The school has many sports facilities, including an Olympic-size swimming pool, workout areas, gym, an outdoor stadium, tennis courts, ping pong tables, indoor and outdoor rock climbing walls, indoor and outdoor basketball courts, squash courts, badminton courts, etc.

There are also numerous amenities on campus, including a library, a theater, a cinema, a dance studio, auditoriums, 5 student cafeterias, 2 teacher cafeterias, 3 cafes, and a convenience store.

In terms of learning space, there are over 350 classrooms, each filled with the distinctive features of its corresponding subject. Additionally, there are many modern science labs, rehearsal halls and art studios.[6]

Extracurricular activities[edit]

The school has interesting school activities, such as the school’s Opening Ceremony, the Campus Singer Contest, the Carnival Day, the Red Window Fair, the Water Splashing Festival, etc.

More importantly, during the events, students get to show their talents, contribute their creativity, and deeply participate in the planning and organizing of the events.[7]

BNDS has a variety of sports events, and every semester the school holds a sports season. The competition includes track-and-field, badminton, table tennis, football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, baseball and softball, squash, swimming, frisbee, archery, fencing, rock climbing, and more. There are also fun activities such as tug of war, jump rope, and Three Leg Running. All interested students can sign up to participate. Some competitions are organized by school physical education teachers, while others are spontaneously planned by various sports student clubs.

In order to promote multicultural understanding on campus, starting from 2009, the school has held several Foreign Culture Days every academic year. Each time, the theme and country are different, making it a series of courses, and students in each grade undertake corresponding cultural activities. Up to now, the school has held nearly a hundred "Foreign Country Culture Day" activities, such as Romanian Culture Day, American Culture Day, Italian Culture Day, Australian Culture Day, French Culture Day, Thai Culture Day, etc. Many embassy staff and cultural exchange institutions from various countries have participated in the event.
