Turkel Design is an architectural design firm that specializes in modern custom homes using panelized prefabrication. They provide residential architecture services to homeowners in any location by designing and manufacturing a building component package, which is shipped to the building site and assembled by a specialized crew or a local contractor.

History[edit]

Turkel Design was founded in 2008 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, by Joel Turkel and Meelena Oleksiuk Turkel,[1] graduates of the Master of Architecture program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.[2] In 2009 Jake Wright, a graduate of the Master of Architecture program at the State University of New York Buffalo, joined the practice as a third partner.[3]

In 2009 Time Magazine named Turkel Design among its Green Building 100 list.[4] In 2014 the practice partnered with Dwell magazine to introduce the Axiom Series of prefab home designs, as part of the Dwell Homes Collection, which range from 1,850 to 3,250 square feet and can be modified according to the client's specifications.[5]

In 2023 the firm opened a design studio at CALA (Community Art Landscape Architecture), a mixed-use development housed in a former high school in Somerville, Massachusetts.

Notable works[edit]

The firm is responsible for more than 200 home designs in 34 U.S. states and 7 countries.

Notable works include:

Mulmur Hills Farm in East Mulmur, Ontario, Canada was named House of the Month in the December 2022 edition of Architectural Record.[8] It was an ArchDaily.com Building of the Year nominee for 2024.[9]

Desert House in Palm Springs, California, is a single-level post-and-beam modern home that Joel and Meelena Turkel designed for their family in Palm Springs, California. It was a Featured Home at Palm Springs Modernism Week in 2019.[10]

In 2013, Howe Sound House, on Gambier Island, off the coast of British Columbia, Canada, received three Best in American Living awards from the National Association of Home Builders; two awards and one finalist mention from the BC Georgie Awards; and two Ovation awards and two finalist mentions from the Homebuilders Association Vancouver.[11]
