There was an attempt to switch the area from Juneau northward to Yukon Time in 1980. This was to lessen the time difference between the interior of Alaska and the capital from 2 hours to 1 hour. The move was extremely unpopular as it put the rest of the panhandle and Seattle an hour ahead of them. At the time Television broadcasting in the panhandle was probably rebroadcasting of Seattle stations (Ketchikan today still has KING-TV on cable listings). Officially the transition was on April 27, 1980 from Pacific Standard Time to Yukon Daylight Time which should have meant no change to clock time as both are UTC-8. The change appears to have been widely ignored and it looks like Juneau refused to cooperate. A local election that March voted 2-1 against the change. DOT reversed course after July hearings and in September decided to officially return Juneau to Pacific Time on October 26, 1980. The issue was resolved by a compromise to move most of the state to Yukon Time in 1983. (Alaska Historical Society) Any Alaska wikipedians out there know if the 1980 change ever happened, partially happened or was completely ignored? Presumably if there was a change there would need to be a new Unix time zone for the rest of the panhandle. America/Juneau is the official Unix time zone for the area but if they changed and the panhandle didn't then America/Sitka perhaps would need to be added. I've found some discussion threads about this regarding Unix time zone databases but it doesn't look like the issue was ever really settled. Skywayman (talk) 11:54, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
