Opening heading[edit]

The inquiry basal cell automatically redirects to stratum germinativum, which should be changed, because in cellular biology and histology it may refer to cells other then the ones present in the stratum germinativum (eg. basal cells present in the olfactory epithelium of the nasal cavity).. disambiguation recommended! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 93.140.79.160 (talk) 16:17, 1 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Basal cells are are a multipotent progenitor cell that can hypothetically be found in association with any epithelium, whether that epithelium is salivary, olfactory mucosa (as stated above),spermatic, bronchial epithelium, etc. Should the article be retitled Basal cels and stratum germinativum should be a subsection of that title? Or should stratum germinativum be a different different article altogether.?--Russot1 (talk) 05:59, 3 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Does the layer contain only stem cells, or daughter cells too?

It is not clear from the article so far how many different types of cells exist in the stratum germinativum. Are there only basal cells (the stem cells)? Or are there also keratinocytes, melanocytes, and the precursors to cells in nails?

How can the layer be only one cell thick, if there are different types of cells present (wouldn't that disrupt the mechanical cohesion of the layer - aren't those different cells of different sizes)? Is it rather that all those daughter cells form in the stratum germinativum, but quickly migrate upwards?

Stratum germinativumStratum basale – I suggest we rename the article 'stratum basale' - as a research scientist I have only rarely seen the deepest epidermal layer called anything other than the SB. A search of pubmed for 'stratum basale' locates far more articles than a search for 'stratum germinativum'. KingMunch (talk) 05:27, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Histology image labels need to be clearer[edit]

There are 3 lines drawn from 2 labels. It would be helpful if the outer boundaries of the layers could be marked by tics. The image is probably clear to dermatologists, but not to a lay person. Jchapin1 (talk) 15:32, 25 November 2018 (UTC)Jchapin1[reply]
