Lily Neo

[edit] )

Created by Bonkers The Clown (talk). Self nominated at 12:08, 24 October 2013 (UTC).

  • Long enough, new enough, passes all the tests and looks well-written to me. Congratulations. :) --Sky Harbor (talk) 05:35, 25 October 2013 (UTC)
  • ALT1:... that Lily Tirtasana Neo was born in Indonesia, attended secondary school in Thailand, was trained in medicine in Ireland, and became an MP in Singapore in 1997? --PFHLai (talk) 06:54, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
  • Pulling out of prep area because the article is very skimpy. It seems to have been padded to make it long enough. I added some content to it, and I think it should be possible to add some more. --Orlady (talk) 15:14, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
  • It is long enough as it is. Of course it is possible. It is also possible to turn this into a GA or a FA. ☯ Bonkers The Clown \(^_^)/ Nonsensical Babble ☯ 12:31, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
  • It is only "long enough" in character count due to padding. Instances of padding include putting the fact that she has two children in the lede as well as the body, saying that her political party is "Singapore-based" (I removed the statement that she lives in Singapore), calling her and her husband "medical practitioners" instead of "doctors" or "physicians", and saying that she plays the piano. I removed the locutions like "abbreviated as PAP", which were a way to stretch out the introduction of an abbreviation. If you trim the current version of the article of all of its padding, it's less than 1500 characters: User:Orlady/Test (1492 characters of prose, per DYKcheck).
Please note that I have already added a little bit of information about her political activities, which where barely mentioned in the version I first reviewed. An adequate (non-stub) article about a politician should tell me more about her political activities than about her children. Since I don't live in Singapore or understand its politics, I don't feel comfortable writing much more about her politics, but there's some material in the cited sources. --Orlady (talk) 14:58, 30 October 2013 (UTC)
  • What is the status of this, Orlady? If you think it can pass DYK with your additions, fine. If you think it's not adequate, then give it the appropriate icon. Bonkers seems uninterested in adding any further material; it's been a week and a half without any action. BlueMoonset (talk) 07:18, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
It's still too skimpy. If I thought my additions made it into an adequate article, I would have said so. Bonkers' attitude is disappointing; it shouldn't be all that difficult for someone who knows more about Singapore politics than I do to add meaningful content to this article. --Orlady (talk) 15:18, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
I found another factoid and added it to the article. Someone else can decide whether the article is now long enough. --Orlady (talk) 15:39, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
In no way is SG Politics a reliable source, just to note. And as knowledgeable about local politics as I may be, I do not see how that is relevant. A person clueless about a desert, for example, can still out a featured article on it with good sources. Just follow what the sources state! I exhausted much of the info found in the initial reliable sources. ☯ Bonkers The Clown \(^_^)/ Nonsensical Babble ☯ 10:57, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
Local knowledge is relevant because it should help you understand what you read, and it may help you find other relevant sources. As an example of "understanding what you read", I find that Lily Neo is chairman of a town council[1], but I have not tried to put that into the article because I don't know how that relates to being an MP. As for sources, I imagine that people in Singapore have access to print sources and sources in languages I can't read. --Orlady (talk) 15:07, 12 November 2013 (UTC)
It doesn't need to relate. I can be the President as well as a lobster trawler. In this case there are adequate English-language sources so I find there no need to scour for Chinese sources, etc. ☯ Bonkers The Clown \(^_^)/ Nonsensical Babble ☯ 07:09, 14 November 2013 (UTC)
  • I consider this article now reaches the DYK criteria as regards length, content and date of creation. I have struck ALT1 because Penang is in Malaysia and the source for the statement on her education does not mention Thailand. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 13:33, 15 November 2013 (UTC)
  • ALT1a:... that Lily Tirtasana Neo was born in Indonesia, attended secondary school in Malaysia, was trained in medicine in Ireland, and became an MP in Singapore in 1997? --PFHLai (talk) 03:58, 16 November 2013 (UTC)
  • Striking ALT1a; there is no inline source that supports Malaysia either. Suggesting the following, which does appear to be supported (and, let's face it, secondary school is not that exciting):
  • Both ALT2 and ALT2a are acceptable, being supported by inline citations. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 05:59, 23 November 2013 (UTC)
