Ganas

[edit]

"Ganas" is not a neighborhood in Staten Island, so I am removing the link to "Neighborhoods in the New York City Borough of Staten Island" 172.165.199.70 14:44, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

West Shore, North Shore, etc

[edit]

An editor has added the broad sections of the borough to the list: East Shore, North Shore, etc. I see three possible approaches for including these areas. One, include them alongside the neighborhoods for simplicity's sake. Two: break the neighborhorhoods out into sublists, and use the broad areas as section headers (like {{Neighborhoods in Washington, D.C.}} does for wards). Three: Remove them entirely using a strict definition of 'neighborhood.' I lean towards option one as the broadest and easiest, or two as the best at representing the topic and most useful for navigation. Fitnr 23:04, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not very familiar with Staten Island, so I can't comment on whether North Shore etc. are legitimate neighborhoods or not, but it strikes me that the problem is similar to, say, the Upper West Side or Upper East Side in Manhattan, which both have recognizable sub-neighborhoods, but also have areas for which no other designation is appropriate. The same with Washington Heights, where Hudson Heights is a well-defined sub-neighborhood. If this is the case, I would suggest that the decision about whether to retain the "Shores" as neighborhoods would lie in whether or not all parts of the "Shore" area are also parts of recognizable neighborhoods. If so, they would seem to be more geographical descriptions than neighborhoods. Beyond My Ken (talk) 23:17, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I also would need to do more research. My impression is that the West Shore is similar to upper Manhattan in it's generality. It's very hard to find reliable sources on how neighborhoods/districts nest with each other. If an editor with good SI knowledge and sources wants to take on organizing this template (and the accompanying list) by "Shore", I would be happy to see it. For now, I don't see an issue with listing the "Shores" as is. Fitnr 23:53, 9 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I should fit the requirement of "an editor with good SI knowledge" since I've lived here all my life. Beyond My Ken is right in assuming that the "Shore" areas are more geographic descriptions than neighborhoods. There'd be no issue where certain areas would only be distinguishable by their shore. Each neighborhood is unique and has a unique name. This is probably due to the fact that Staten Island was multiple towns early in its history; it wasn't unified until the consolidation of 1898. Making the shores into subheadings would be a very good solution.
The real problem is that it is not that simple. There's the issue of the fact that there is no clear-cut five shores. Most sources actually use three or four: there are three New York City Council seats, the Staten Island Advance uses four shores, etc. The general consensus seems to be that the Mid-Island can be split into West Shore and East Shore, but no one source uses all five. To put the shores onto this template we'd have to do one of two things: a) make the East & West Shores into subsections of the Mid-Island and further complicate the situation, or b) leave all the neighborhoods in the East & West Shores in the Mid-Island section and just give the East & West two links somewhere, such as next to the Mid-Island link. What do you all think?
Also, I can organize the neighborhoods into the shores, but just one question: would they be in alphabetical order, or would they be best in some sort of geographical order (like north to south or east to west)?
Thanks! Nick1372 (talk) 04:29, 10 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Belated thanks for all the helpful thoughts. Based on this discussion, I've moved the five "Geographic sections" into a separate row of the template, so they'll be distinguished from actual "Neighborhoods" without pretending there's any official definition of how they're nested. Hope this helps a bit. —173.68.139.31 (talk) 14:17, 28 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorted by three areas?

[edit]

Based on an earlier conversation on this talk page: Below is a version of the navbox showing what it could look like based on the three sections.

I am not familiar with the geography of Staten Island, so I am taking my cue for this mockup from a Staten Island's Borough President's webpage[1] which breaks down Community Districts into three sections, roughly corresponding to:
