Quotes

[edit]

Remember the words of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook:

הצדיקים הטהורים אינם קובלים על הרשעה אלא מוסיפים צדק אינם קובלים על הכפירה אלא מוסיפים אמונה אינם קובלים על הבערות אלא מוסיפים חכמה

(the pure righteous, do not complain of evil but increase justice, do not complain of heresy but increase faith, do not complain of ignorance but increase wisdom)

Think of Jonah's disturbed solution:

ויאמר אליהם שאוני והטילוני אל הים, וישתק הים, מעליכם; כי יודע אני, כי בשלי הסער הגדול הזה עליכם

"Pick me up and throw me into the sea and it will become calm; for I know that it is because of me that this great storm has come upon you".

History

[edit]

The work was first published by the East End Jewish publisher Shapiro, Valentine &Co: Genesis in 1929 and finally Deuteronomy in 1934. The volumes were printed in Wittenberg. The academic reviews were positive even enthusiastic [1] [2] [3].

Little is known of the authors of this work. Rosenbaum (1871-1947)was a UK rabbi [4][5]. Silbermann (1889-1939) studied in Berlin and had settled in England, he was known for his 1927 German and English dictionary of the Talmud, Midrash and Targum and he was the publishing director of Shapiro, Valentine &Co[6][7]. Blashki and Joseph were from Sydney, NSW. The work is dedicated to Phillip Blashki and his wife Hannah.

The work is commonly known today as "Silberman's" even though he was only the co-author. The Silbermann family republished the work in collaboration with Routledge and Kegan Paul Ltd in 1973 [8].
