Hello Deirdre~enwiki and welcometoWikipedia! Hope you like it here, and stick around.

Here are some tips to help you get started:

Good luck!

Deirdre - just a word of thanks for your excellent spelling, typo and punctuation corrections ! I'm very tempted to put a link into constructed wetland into all my articles and edits just to get a free clean-up service. For those of us on very slow and intermittent connections, someone else tidying up loose ends is a real boon. Thanks

Velela 14:47, 17 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Hello, Deirdre. Belated welcome!!! I noticed you on Velela's Talk page.
You're "somewhat of a compulsive proofreader", eh? So am I sometimes. My wife says I'm the only person in New Zealand who ever proofread his performance appraisal; well, that was the only thing worth doing to it; fortunately that boss left the council's employ soon after.
My knowledge of Alaska is 50% derived from Johnny Horton's "North to Alaska", which is one of my favo[u]rite songs. But I enjoyed a glance at your Ester, which I used to think was just a chemical term or a typo. Great to see that a 1600-person CDP can get such a writeup. My Plimmerton is only a little more populous but also an independent-minded "suburb". I must try to give it some more text.

Kind regards from across the Pacific Ocean. Robin Patterson 21:40, 24 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for catching my grammatical errors in Edgar Alwin Payne! I get in a hurry to finish and make silly mistakes. I had "his", wanting to make it "after his passing", but then in mid sentence made it "after his passed away", just silly. I am working on the plurals, not thinking. THANKS! WikiDon 1 July 2005 16:06 (UTC)

Did you look at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Artists_by_nationality http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:U.S._artists http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:United_States_painters

These should give you some ideas/help.

Shacknasty Jim[edit]

Hey, nice work on the cleanup! Thanks. --Scimitar 4 July 2005 16:43 (UTC)

2:52 PM 8/2/2005 Hey thanks for updating Jay Hammond's page to reflect his death. By the way, which UA school do you work for?

Doug Swingley article[edit]

I saw your edits on some mushing related articles, and wanted to request your help on the Doug Swingley article. This winter I am hoping to go to a race which Doug has entered (not Iditarod though). If I go, I hope that he will let me do a small interview with him. If you have any ideas for useful questions, please let me know and I will add them to my list. Inclusive Democracy[edit]

Hello! I am writing to you because I saw that you had at some point edited the page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inclusive_Democracy

What's going on is that I am trying to add some links to criticisms of this project, and those around it have deleted them and are almost certainly going to do that again, possibly forcing me to revert and/or protect the page. I believe that it is against Wikipedia policies that those whose work is discussed in an entry will always have the last word regarding anything related to that entry.

Would you be so kind as to keep an eye on the page (after you read the talk page, and assuming you feel what I'm saying makes sense). Thanks in advance!

Paulcardan 04:43, 19 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusive Democracy 2[edit]

OK, thanks a lot for taking the time to leave the note on my talk page. The whole thing has become too complicated now, with pages being deleted and so on, so no need to worry.

Paulcardan 05:35, 2 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Birches[edit]

I checked up in the Flora of North America which clearly gives Betula nana sensu stricto as native in North America as well as Europe and Asia, so the two pages should be merged. I'll add more details on the Dwarf Birch page to reflect this. I've also added more details from FNA to Alaska Birch and American Dwarf Birch; the FNA and a couple of other refs I checked all gave maximum heights for American Dwarf Birch of 1.5-3 m so I've changed the figures for it to that. - MPF 14:10, 7 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Project Alaska[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Project Alaska! While our member-base is small, we are growing. As a heads-up, one thing we do ask is any Alaska-related pages/images/lists/categories you contribute to, please make sure to add our {{Project Alaska}} template to the Talk page (no subst please), and most importantly, add the item & it's Talk page to Wikipedia:WikiProject Alaska/Alaska recent changes so we can track any future updates. Thanks a lot and again, welcome! —akghetto talk 10:23, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RE:Wikipedia:WikiProject_Alaska/Alaska_recent_changes - No, don't bother worrying about alphabetical or anything, feel free to add to the end of the list. The list is just a compilation of all our pages/images/lists/etc so that the link Special:Recentchangeslinked/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Alaska/Alaska_recent_changes works as a community watch list if you will. A way we can all track recent changes (good or bad) and not have to clog up your individual Watchlist as well. For me, right now I'm working on expanding community descriptions & history. After that, probably transportation related articles. Once again, welcome!

Long time no see.[edit]

Nice to see you on the site... and surpassing me in contributions. I've been slacking lately, I guess. --Cgranade 11:35, 23 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alaska libraries, Russian-language or aboriginal-language materials[edit]

I saw the discussion about Anchor Point Public Library. I just wanted to suggest that, where possible, you mention whether a public or academic library has non-English materials related to the past and present Russian-speaking or aboriginal-language-speaking communities, or special materials related to whaling, mining or petroleum exploration and production. Regards, TruthbringerToronto (Talk | contribs) 17:15, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Diane E. Benson[edit]

Totally agree. Everyone seemed to be looking at it as a WP:C&E question only. What I'm going to do is store the name on my homepage, wait for her to lose the election (which looks pretty likely), and then try to get a version of the article built around her writing undeleted. Re: Vandalism on Jamie Smith[edit]

No problem on the Jamie Smith vandalism revert. I found it among the Dead End pages because it had been stripped of categories and links. I had a look at the vandalism and it looks like the page has become a target for different sets of teenagers mostly because Jamie Smith is a common name. I'm not sure what you can do except keep an eye on the page. Flowerpotman 22:56, 27 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I just thought I should say hi, since I see you're another active WP:ALASKA person. I've been busy adding the project tag to categories that didn't have it, preparatory to updating the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Alaska/Alaska recent changes page, which doesn't seem to have been updated in a good long while. Speedy deletion of Ray Troll[edit]

A tag has been placed on Ray Troll requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}tothe top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 05:46, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Help, I need an opinion from an uninvolved neutral wiki-editor on a subject[edit]

Help, I need an opinion from an uninvolved neutral wiki-editor on a subject Hello, if you have a few minutes to help a fellow editor out, I wanted to take a moment of your time to get your opinion on a dispute I'm having with a wikipedia editor. if you visit the page on "Homeowners Association", and look at the discussion, the dissent is about a link I placed on the page to the website "Homeowners Association Websites Central." A certain editor "Wangi" not only believes that I have no right to place the link in the external links section, but further has accused me of starting bogus accounts as new users simply to add this link. I figure if I get some well known wikipedians to look at the situation, the link, and add their opinion to the debate, then at least I will know that the crazy accusations of user fraud will stop. Boy, who would have thought this would be such a hassle. Anyway the url for the link in question is http://www.athomenet.com/homenew/homeowners-association-websites-central.asp , and you can see the long history by looking at the history log on the homeowners association page.... Please, whatever your opinion may be, place it in the discussion area page in the topic of external links of Homeowners association central, and if you think the content is helpful, please add or undo wangi's deletion of the page. I will respect whatever your opinion is. Thank you: 69.15.97.162 (talk) 15:45, 20 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Respawning Ray Troll's article[edit]

Hi Deirdre, I'm traveling in Central America and having a conversation with a fellow traveler, when my interlocutor mentions Ray Troll. I'm taking this as a sign that it's time to recreate that article, which I'm sure could have been saved had it not been so hastily deleted. There is now a formal request to create such an article. Since he has won the Academy of Natural Sciences' Gold Medal for Distinction in Natural History Art, it won't be too difficult to establish notability. If you have any of the materials on hand, or any versions of the old article squirreled away, please feel free to recreate the article. Otherwise, I'll start researching a new beginning. --Shunpiker (talk) 20:47, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

hoo, it's obviously been a while since I have been on Wikipedia! I'll see what I've got. I don't understand this obsession with deletions....Deirdre (talk) 20:17, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Conflict of interest[edit]

Please read WP:CONFLICT. Don't you think it would be appropriate to declare a conflict of interest when editing The Ester Republic, John Trigg Ester Library, Jamie Smith (cartoonist), T. Neil Davis, etc. and when citing The Ester Republic. --Weetoddid (talk) 21:57, 29 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I hadn't read that statement until very late in the game. Since then I haven't made any edits to these pages. Are you suggesting that I should make a note on the actual page or just in the notes on the discussion pages? I could do the latter.Deirdre (talk) 21:04, 24 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Insurgent49[edit]

Regarding the Insurgent49 article, can you demonstrate that it meets the notability guidelines? --John Kronenwetter (talk) 19:47, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It was the only progressive/liberal newspaper in the Anchorage area, and only one of two in the state. It received three awards including Best Column the year it was published from the Alaska Press Club, and broke many important stories. They covered all kinds of stories not explored in the mainstream press, and considering that the alternative press in Alaska consisted of only three publications at the time (with maybe one or possibly two radio stations), this was significant. So yes, for Alaska, it was quite notable, and it can be demonstrated. Deirdre (talk) 17:23, 17 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use Image:Ederj .jpg[edit]

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Ederj .jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. Onthe image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. 72.88.40.120 (talk) 04:53, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Unreferenced BLPs[edit]

Hello Deirdre! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 876 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the article:

Please Investigate Problems on BP (British Petroleum) Wikipedia Page: Intentionally Burying Section on Gulf of Mexico Oil Disaster, Changing Name of Oil Disaster to Hide it[edit]

Any attempts to correct this (following reasonable Wikipedia guidelines) are met with aggressive reverts and edits. Intentional spinning and manipulation of article in favor of BP? Can this task force investigate this?

Currently there is no easily recognizable section on the current Gulf of Mexico Oil Disaster, surprisingly since the US Government has held BP responsible. Instead the "Oil Disaster" Section in the article keeps being given obscure (hard to recognize) names (as if someone is trying to hide the section from the public).

That section also keeps getting pushed to the bottom of the article (attempts to bury it)?

It's as if the BP Public Relations department has staff people who are aggressively spinning the article. Could this Task Force investigate this?

Your account will be renamed[edit]

The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.

Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Deirdre. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Deirdre~enwiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name. If you think you might own all of the accounts with this name and this message is in error, please visit Special:MergeAccount to check and attach all of your accounts to prevent them from being renamed.

Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.

Sorry for the inconvenience.

Yours,

12:02, 22 April 2015 (UTC)

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Wisconsin Green Party requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nominationbyvisiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Question about University of Alaska Museum of the North article[edit]

Hello,

I believe you are responsible for this statement in the article on UAMN: "It (the museum) was mandated as part of the original legislation establishing the university in 1917." I was hoping you could provide me with the original source for this information.

Thanks,

Notice

The article Jim Sykes has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails WP:GNG and WP:NPOL. Internet search (per WP:BEFORE) failed to produce any sourcing that would satisfy the notability guidelines.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

This bot DID NOT nominate any of your contributions for deletion; please refer to the history of each individual page for details. Thanks, FastilyBot (talk) 10:00, 17 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
