Administrators' newsletter – July 2021

[edit]

News and updates for administrators from the past month (July 2021).

Guideline and policy news

  • AnRfC is open to add a delay of one week from nomination to deletion for G13 speedy deletions.

Technical news

  • Last week all wikis were very slow or not accessible for 30 minutes. This was due to server lag caused by regenerating dynamic lists on the Russian Wikinews after a large bulk import. (T287380)

  • DYK for Tomorrow Belongs to Me

    [edit]

On10 August 2021, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Tomorrow Belongs to Me, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that almost as soon as Cabaret opened, people mistakenly complained the song "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" was a genuine Nazi anthem? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Tomorrow Belongs to Me. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Tomorrow Belongs to Me), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

    Your closure at WT:MOS

    [edit]

Hi, would you mind undoing this close. The discussion had only been underway for two days; I was one of the editors pinged by Vaze50, and while I've been busy with things RL of late, I'd always intended to weigh in there. Besides, Colin's recent post had said what needed to be said (particularly with regard to GoodDay's tone, imo), and had established a more cooperative atmosphere. The first point raised by Vaze50 ("1) Historical articles") seems to have been completely ignored, at least from what I've seen, as editors just zeroed in on the second one. But I think that first point can and should be discussed further. Thanks, JG66 (talk) 12:28, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I am reluctant to re-open the discussion. I appreciate that by cutting it off I am preventing some people from making points they want to make. However, I have not yet seen anything said in that thread which doesn't basically replicate the views aired in the previous discussion. The conversation this time is markedly more heated and personal and there are people who are on the edge of topic-ban territory; a couple of sensible posts asking people to cool down is unlikely to have much effect. I take your point that the subject of historical articles as set out in (1) hasn't been debated as much, but do you really feel that there are new or different things to say that weren't essentially covered a couple of months ago? And if that discussion really does need to happen, could it not wait a few weeks to give people more chance to calm down about the subject? Regards, The Land (talk) 14:50, 15 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The Land Hello - following the closure of that discussion, I must ask you for your opinion on the second point (historical biography inconsistency), which was not generating the same heat as the first point (contemporary inclusion of UK). I am confused as to why it is that historical biographies for people from what is today the UK are not appropriately updated to include the status of the state they were born/died in at the time. We can see that this is the case for people from every other country going, even in instances where a political state lasted just a few years, this is taken account of in the infobox. However for people from what is now the UK (but was not previously), this is not the case. A simple question - do you know why this is? Vaze50 (talk) 14:24, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JG66:, I do wish you would've pinged here, if you were going to mention me, in your post. GoodDay (talk) 16:09, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
See here and here, where I'm directly/indirectly spoken about by others, but not notified. GoodDay (talk) 16:53, 31 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    • Amotion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
    • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
    • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

    Miscellaneous

    • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
    • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

A tag has been placed on Tropical cyclone naming G, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent. If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nominationbyvisiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribetothe weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

    Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

    1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR

New editors were more successful with this new tool.

The New topic tool helps editors create new ==Sections== on discussion pages. New editors are more successful with this new tool. You can read the report. Soon, the Editing team will offer this to all editors at most WMF-hosted wikis. You can join the discussion about this tool for the English Wikipedia is at Wikipedia:Village pump (proposals)#Enabling the New Topic Tool by default. You will be able to turn it off in the tool or at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

The Editing team plans to change the appearance of talk pages. These are separate from the changes made by the mw:Desktop improvements project and will appear in both Vector 2010 and Vector 2022. The goal is to add some information and make discussions look visibly different from encyclopedia articles. You can see some ideas at Wikipedia talk:Talk pages project#Prototype Ready for Feedback.

    ArbCom 2022 Elections voter message

    [edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2022 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:25, 29 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This newsletter includes two key updates about the Editing team's work:

    1. The Editing team will finish adding new features to the Talk pages project and deploy it.
    2. They are beginning a new project, Edit check.

    Talk pages project

Screenshot showing the talk page design changes that are currently available as beta features at all Wikimedia wikis. These features include information about the number of people and comments within each discussion.
    Some of the upcoming changes

The Editing team is nearly finished with this first phase of the Talk pages project. Nearly all new features are available now in the Beta Feature for Discussion tools.

It will show information about how active a discussion is, such as the date of the most recent comment. There will soon be a new "Add topic" button. You will be able to turn them off at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion. Please tell them what you think.

Daily edit completion rate by test group: DiscussionTools (test group) and MobileFrontend overlay (control group)

An A/B test for Discussion tools on the mobile site has finished. Editors were more successful with Discussion tools. The Editing team is enabling these features for all editors on the mobile site.

    New Project: Edit Check

The Editing team is beginning a project to help new editors of Wikipedia. It will help people identify some problems before they click "Publish changes". The first tool will encourage people to add references when they add new content. Please watch that page for more information. You can join a conference call on 3 March 2023 to learn more.

  • Wikiproject Military history coordinator election nominations open

    [edit]

Nominations for the upcoming project coordinator election have opened. A team of up to ten coordinators will be elected for the next coordination year. The project coordinators are the designated points of contact for issues concerning the project, and are responsible for maintaining our internal structure and processes. They do not, however, have any authority over article content or editor conduct, or any other special powers. More information on being a coordinator is available here. If you are interested in running, please sign up here by 23:59 UTC on 14 September! Voting will commence on 15 September. If you have any questions, you can contact any member of the current coord team. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:05, 2 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

    [edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:20, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

RFA2024 update: no longer accepting new proposals in phase I

    [edit]

Hey there! This is to let you know that phase I of the 2024 requests for adminship (RfA) review is now no longer accepting new proposals. Lots of proposals remain open for discussion, and the current round of review looks to be on a good track towards making significant progress towards improving RfA's structure and environment. I'd like to give my heartfelt thanks to everyone who has given us their idea for change to make RfA better, and the same to everyone who has given the necessary feedback to improve those ideas. The following proposals remain open for discussion:

To read proposals that were closed as unsuccessful, please see Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/2024 review/Phase I/Closed proposals. You are cordially invited once again to participate in the open discussions; when phase I ends, phase II will review the outcomes of trial proposals and refine the implementation details of other proposals. Another notification will be sent out when this phase begins, likely with the first successful close of a major proposal. Happy editing! theleekycauldron (talk • she/her), via:
