Meetup code of conduct and anonymity when meeting via video conference
This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.
Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.
If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:
Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.
If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.
If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.
If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.
The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

The financial statement for 2022 was approved at the AGM of Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand held on Monday 17 April 2023. Work is still proceeding on the performance report we are required to submit to Charities Services by end June. This will be a "Tier 4 report", because the Society is currently eligible for the simple cash-based reporting allowed by this standard. Expenditure against the WMF General Support Grant 2022-23 remains significantly below budget, largely because limited volunteer capacity has prevented us from developing several of the initiatives included in the grant proposal, and the associated expenditure. We have held discussions with our regional WMF representative over our proposed expenditure submitted in the 2023-24 General Support Grant proposal, and are awaiting feedback.

New Zealand Wikidata Thesis Project aims to get New Zealand dissertations into Wikidata. Project Page, Project Dashboard. There is a google spreadsheet of theses authors with Wikipedia pages who need their theses adding to their page if folk want to work on this during #1Lib1Ref.
Te Papa is encouraging staff to contribute to an all day editing session on May 9. The Te Papa Library team have committed to a morning and key editors on staff will be joining Te Papa's Wikipedian in Residence for the day.
18th May international museum day competition. Whole thing has been called off for this year as organiser is sick. Keep it in mind for next year.
20 May - Endangered species week - Mike considering getting the Critter of the Week folk together for a virtual and in person editathon for endangered species articles.
Other suggestions for themes around events include Library Week, Conservation Week, International Volunteers Day, 24hr editathon for Ada Lovelace Day, WikiSource Women's History Month for Wikisource, Winter Olympics, Matariki Event, Library Week. We should think about the focus of the work - is it to onboard folk or to focus on content. Any further update?

Dunedin Women in Architecture editathon 20 May 2023 - DrThneed has organised a couple of subject experts to come along. Giantflightless birds in process of organising venue. DrThneed has been doing significant Wikidata work around the project (see below).
Wikimania Wiki Loves Manuscripts - project to enable a pathway for the preservation of archives and manuscripts that aren't held in GLAMs to get digitised, transcribed and into Wiki. General discussion about this project and how it may relate to New Zealand.

Marshelec completed a GA review on Walter Nash during the month, and this High-importance article has now been promoted to GA. He created a new article in the past month for Pariwhero / Red Rocks a well-known feature on the Wellington south coast. Another new article (just moved into main space yesterday) is Lucy Greenish, who was the first woman to become a registered architect in New Zealand (in 1914). He has made significant improvements to Cats in New Zealand (although there is a lot more to do), and also to International Antarctic Centre , and expanded Wanganui River. He also contributed some further improvements to Matiu / Somes Island – this article has been nominated for GA review by User:Wainuiomartian and is current waiting for a reviewer. Marshelec been accepted as a reviewer for Articles for Creation, and has completed several AFC reviews so far, leading to several new articles being published including an article about the New Zealand female orchestral conductor Tianyi Lu and the Waiwhetu Aquifer (this one created by User:Wainuiomartian). Other work for WANZ has included development of some policies, discussions over the 2023-24 General Support Grant application, and routine treasurer’s work. Finally, users Marshelec, Noracrentiss and Gertrude206 have made a proposal to Wadestown Library to hold one or more open days in the library during the forthcoming 1lib1ref campaign. Currently waiting for feedback to sort out details and timing.
DrThneed Sorting out architecture editathon for May 20. Have done a lot of Wikidata work to support it, creating a NZ Women in Architecture Wikidata project and adding women, books, awards to it (very few buildings so far!). Still need to add some queries to visualise things (suggestions welcome!). Made a Listeria for the project. Created a page for Lynda Simmons and put it forward for a DYK to run on May 20 (would be nice to have a photo).
Thesis project: Created a Scholia for Otago Zoology department, to support Mike's Wikimedian in residence work. Submitted a short paper to the Journal of Academic Librarianship. Working on a longer paper. Commented on a Wikidata toolkit prepared by the librarians at LSE and York. Submitted a proposal for a talk at Lianza in Christchurch and will apply to Wanz for funding to attend.
Ambrosia10 - working on moth articles in Wikipedia in the genus Helastia. Preparing SPNHC presentations both involving Wiki content. Working on Hidden Figures university course involving Wikidata. Biodiversity Heritage Library had their draft whitepaper on Wiki engagement released - I was interviewed, helped advise and gave feedback. Started DRAFT GLAMwiki newsletter for April which includes links to two presentations I did, both of which touched on wiki work. Other misc work on Mix'n'match and wiki gardening.
Paora has been updating Wikicommons with the recent investiture images and adding them to Wikipedia pages where appropriate. He's also been working on Taini Jamison article after her recent death. Issue with birth date have arisen.
Giantflightlessbirds - has been sick so that slowed play. He's been working with the zoology department at Otago University. Creating a Staff "to do" list for Wikipedia articles, getting staff in Wikidata, scanning and uploading photos of most people up to 1990s. He's been adding recent zoological publications by staff to Wikidata. Has also had a 3 month contract with the Left Bank Art Gallery in Greymouth as they have funding in their artist legacy project to help organise and add content to WikiCommons and Wikipedia. He has been trying to fill in gaps generally with their content, training them on openly licensing image and clearing them for that so that they may be added to Commons. He's also bee working on the archives of Yvonne Rust a notable potter urgently rehousing them, getting them in a state for digitisation. Her trust holds the copyright of all her works and is keen to release them under an open license. Had a great trip to Sydney.
Beeswaxcandle - continuing to work on the Transactions of the New Zealand institute in Wikisource. He's done a table of contents from vol 1 to 40 and is now working on the index to vol 1 - 40 and linking articles to authors. See this link. There was a discussion about a book Hokitika New Zealand: The Birth of a Borough book uploaded and completed in Wikisource during the Westcoast Wikiproject which he has now released a recording of it being read on Librivox. This book has been viewed over 4700 times on the Internet Archive in less than a month.
MargaretRDonald - has been working on political cartoons in anticipation of an editathon. She's been having been issues about getting list names of cartoonists, also cartoons covered by UK copyright law and as a result are difficult to get into Wikicommons.
David Nind - Wikipedia - did nothing in the last month as the Koha project is taking up a lot of his time. Planning on doing something in the coming month.
Oronsay - Until Giantflightless birds arrived in Sydney, she was an avid devotee of NZ thesis project, but has now been working on the cartoon project. She's been creating Wikidata items and adding images to Wikipedia pages of cartoonists. Some New Zealanders who migrated to Australia and found cartoon fame are being included, David Low as an example. She's written two or three women articles and doing a little bit of the Women in Red prep. Chocmilk03 came on board and has created a Women in Red meetup page. Also doing the usual wiki gardening.
Einebillion - She's been doing admin work. But planning more work in Wikidata with NZ historic photographers. There will be a book soon to be released featuring about 120 NZ women photographers. But the author has a spreadsheet of about 400 women photographers that Einebillion would like to get it into Wikidata. She's also been doing day to day work such as adding new meetup pages.

NDF conference calling for ideas/submissions/ideas - NDF conference - Giantflightless explained history of Wiki presentations at NDF including initially mainly workshops - "hands on" events. More recently there have been presentations particularly on the Overview of Wiki movement in NZ. He suggested we might want to do a "Hands on" event during NDF. Previous one was Wikidata basics. Maybe something more indepth? GLAM sector hands on skill training. Einebillion commented about the Morning and Afternoon teas and lunch - being a "picking brains" opportunity which wasn't well delivered last conference as it was virtual. Other suggests included a presentation about the Te Papa pilot project, Wikisource - Project Westcoast libraries presentation. A half day out of copyright publications Wikisource session. Beeswaxcandle says if this happens it is very important to pick the right book. Giantflightlessbirds sugggested a book from the Auckland museum BHL list assuming there is one short enough. Other examples could be the Pasifica Arts project, the NZ thesis project. NDF is looking for digital Innovation and audience outreach. Innovations in data and infrastructure. See the NDF website.
