Aotearoa New Zealand Online Meetup 49[edit]

Meetup code of conduct and anonymity when meeting via video conference[edit]

All attendees are expected to understand and abide by the Universal Code of Conduct.

This video conferencing meetup is a replacement for an in-person meetup. While attending and remaining anonymous is supported by the group, lurking is not supported and will be actively discouraged. All attendees are expected to use their User name as an identifier on the video conference call and to introduce themselves and their interest in joining the call on the chat channel of the call as a minimum. Participation using video and / or voice in addition to Chat is encouraged but not required.

Some members of the group have been the target of cyber bullying in the past and these measures are intended to support creating a safe space for collaboration.

If a new attendee joins the group with video and voice disabled, they will be encouraged to participate by the facilitator, using this script:

Welcome new attendee. This group respects your right to remain anonymous. This group has a policy of discouraging lurking as it makes some of us uncomfortable. If you are happy to introduce yourself over voice, please let us know what you've been working on and if you need help with any editing issues.
If you're not comfortable updating the group by voice, then that's okay. You have the option of introducing yourself and adding your user page link into the chat feature. The chat is deleted once the video conference finishes.
If you want to remain completely anonymous and not chat, then this meetup is not for you. We make comprehensive and extensive notes of the meetup that will be included in the meetup page afterwards. That's the best way to catch up with what this meetup has been doing if you don't want to contribute during the video call.
If you're not sure how to use the chat feature you can access it by clicking on the icon that looks like a speech bubble in the bottom left corner.

If, after an appropriate length of time, the new attendee does not participate by video, voice, or chat, the facilitator of the group will remove the attendee from the video call.

If the new attendee persists in logging in, the group will discuss abandoning the meet up.

Chat for sharing pastes, URLs and so on[edit]

The Jitsi video conferencing platform has a chat feature. This is used to share URLs and other commentary while the discussions are occurring. The facilitators may take a copy to help with writing up outcomes from the meeting on the meeting Wikipedia page. Any copies will be deleted once outcomes and notes are completed.

Future meetups[edit]

This is a monthly event running every 4 weeks, but double check the Aotearoa New Zealand Online page to confirm.

Introduction to meet up by organisers[edit]

Wikimedia User Group of Aotearoa New Zealand – update and discussion (15 minutes)[edit]

WANZ Annual Community Activity Report June 2023 - July 2024

Diff blog posts

Update from President, WANZ[edit]

The AGM of WANZ incorporated society on 21 May elected the following commmittee

On behalf of the committee and the members I thanked both Noracrentiss and Giantflightlessbirds who decided not to stand for relection and who had both given a lot of energy and time to the society as secretary and vice-president respectively.

We've confirmed the date and location for next year's WIkiCon - Christchurch at the Te Ara Institute on 16-18 May 2025. Save the date.

Update from Treasurer, WANZ[edit]

We presented the 2023 Performance Report (for the calendar year) to the Annual General Meeting on 21 May. The report will now be filed with Charities Services. Currently, we are waiting to hear back from Wikimedia Foundation about the grant for the July 2024 — June 25 period. We expect to have some unspent grant funds at the end of the 2023-24 year, and with permission from WMF will transfer these into an operating reserve. This reserve will enable us to improve flexibility and respond to good quality but unforeseen opportunities that arise within a grant year. We have recently issued subscription renewal invoices for the 2024 period to those who joined in 2023. Several new grant applications have been received, and these will be considered at our June committee meeting.

Wiki-Con Weekends, Editathons, Events and Outreach in 2024[edit]

If you're an event organiser, don't forget to add your event as a program to the Campaign Dashboard. The Dashboard is a key tracking tool for reporting back to Wikimedia Foundation and will help us ensure that we get funding in future years. If you are unsure how to add programs to the Campaign dashboard you can find further information here on how to create a new event dashboard and how to link it to the overall campaign dashboard. Alternatively contact: Ambrosia10 (talk) on her talk page for help.
If you're interested in organising a Wiki event, Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand (WANZ) provides support funding. Contact admin @ wikimedia.nz for more information on how to apply. It's really simple - we promise!

Conflict of interest editing[edit]

Main page DYK screen shot

The DYK lead hook shown here was pulled on Friday evening (24 May). Yes, that's my mugshot. The concern was undisclosed conflict of interest (COI) editing. I'll put a few slides together to talk about conflict of interests, what it is, and how to manage them. The objective is for everyone to learn from it. The takeaway should be an increased awareness, and ideas for how you can declare your COIs on your user page. Schwede66 03:28, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Report back to WANZ community on the concluded Te Papa Research Expeditions project[edit]

Ambrosia10 was a Wikipedian in Residence at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa conducting this project. This project has been formally concluded as at today's date, however there are two upcoming edit-a-thons that are stlll to be held relating to this project. The first is a Te Papa staff focused event to be held in the beginning of June and the second is a public facing event on the 13th of July. The draft final report will be completed by the end of August, allowing those research expedition themed events to reported on. This final project report will be published in Zenodo to create a DOI, a Wikidata item will then be created for the report and it will also be added to Wikicommons. The report will be shared with the wider Wiki community via the project page, the Wikidata WikiProject Research Expeditions page, the GLAMwiki newsletter as well as with the WikiProject Research Expeditions group and the TDWG modelling research expeditions task group. The report contains information on the aims and the outcomes of the project including appropriate Wikidata queries summarising project data. Included in this report is guidance on how to replicate this project should other institutions wish to undertake similar efforts.

Other than this report the key outcomes of this project have been the successful trailing of the research expedition schema with improvements and discussion points being raised with both the WikiProject Research Expedition group and TDWG modelling research expedition task group, over 100 Te Papa associated research expedition items were created, numerous other Wikidata items were created on participants, vessels, locations, publications and organisations involved with those research expeditions, engagement with Te Papa staff including informal and formal meetings as well as the above mentioned staff and public editathon events, adding appropriate images to Wikicommons and creating stub Wikipedia articles in anticipation of the editathons, User:Avocadobabygirl creating a Wikipedia article infobox template that draws from data in Wikidata, the use of Joaquim Santos' tool to visualise Te Papa based research expeditions, reporting back on the project to the wider Wiki community via the GLAMwiki newsletter, the submissions of abstracts to Wikimania 2024 and the TDWG/SPNHC 2024 conferences. Other outcomes included trialling structured data on commons statements for Te Papa research expedition specimens including adding "significant event" statements linking the images of holotype specimens collected during the expedition to the research expedition item and a successful presentation on the project to the Te Papa Natural History team.

The abstract submission to the joint SPNHC/TDWG 2024 conference on this project has been accepted and Ambrosia10 is seeking funding from Wikimedia Aotearoa New Zealand to attend this conference in order to give this presentation in person. She is still awaiting news on whether the abstract on this project has been accepted for Wikimania 2024.

Round table for participants[edit]

Opportunity to say what you’re working on and if you need help to do anything or want anything demonstrated. You can add requests for help here prior to the meeting if you want

- WikiProject Te Papa Research expeditions As explained above, apart from the events being organised and the finalising of the report on the project, this is now complete. However the work I am doing with the international WikiProject Research Expeditions as well as the TDWG modelling research expeditions task group is continuing.
- BHL Annual Meeting 2024 I was in Chicago attending this meeting and giving a report on the progress the BHL-Wiki working group has been making since its inception in December 2023. I also delivered a presentation on BHL & the Wikiverse at the BHL Open Day symposium which was the public part of this annual meeting. The whole symposium was recorded and this can be found here.
- SPNHC/TDWG 2024 I've also had my abstract on the WikiProject Te Papa research expeditions accepted for the SPNHC/TDWG 2024 conference.
- OE Global 2024 I've been invited to keynote at the Open Education Global Conference 2024 to be held Brisbane in November 2024.
- WikiProject IBC 2024 I've been making progress with the WikiProject IBC with User:Stitchbird2 giving my coauthor and me feedback on our recent publication. We have amended this in line with the feedback and have uploaded this second version to Zenodo. User:Stitchbird2 has organised her husband to translate this document into Spanish for the IBC Wikidate workshop and once this translation is double checked I intend to also upload that document into Zenodo and link it to the English version in anticipation of the workshop. The group is also making progress on poster preparation, on the workshop slides, as well as Wikifying the conference.
- Hidden Figures All CURE modules have now been submitted to BCEENET and we are awaiting their response. We've also published the Wikidata CURE activity and its supplement on Wikidata tools and resources in Zenodo. Progress is also being made on the drafting of a scholarly article on this CURE by my co-author Makenzie Mabry and myself.
- Biota podcast - I was recently featured in this podcast.
- Women Genera - The writing of the second scholarly article analysing the data researched is still underway.
- Editing - Other than edits needed to "wikify" the International Botanical Congress, I've been doing some random English Wikipedia edits, but am mainly working on the BHL and Harvard mix'n'match datasets.

  1. Was invited to University of Canterbury to run a Wikidata training event with Zeborah and Mike.
  2. Thesis project: began work (again) on detailing the process for librarians to add thesis data themselves, revising paper.
  3. Put all new FRSNZs into Wikidata (almost all were there already).
  4. Made a property proposal for an identifier for the Kōromako Māori writers database.
  5. Still keeping up (just about) with 1 start class page per day for #1woman1day. New pages for lots of academics, plus artist Nancy Bolton and architect Nicola Herbst for the editathons Ink on paper and Women in Architecture 2024. About to do a DYK for Sara Templeton.
