三十日は九月

三十日は九月︵Thirty days hath September︶は、英語圏で大の月と小の月を暗記するのに用いられた文章である。

Thirty days hath November,︵三十日は十一月︶
April, June, and September:︵四月、六月、九月︶
Of twenty-eight is but one,︵二十八日が一つ︶
And all the remnant thirty-one.︵残りは三十一日︶

現代では上のものと (1)九月と十一月が入れ替わる、(2)閏年が文に加わる、が異なる。 口伝によるため文に差異が見られるが一行目は共通している。前半が有名である。 ([]は省かれることが多い部分を表す)


Thirty days hath September,︵三十日は九月、︶
April, June, and [dull] November:︵四月、六月、十一月︶
All the rest have thirty-one,︵残りは三十一日︶
Except[ing] [for] February [alone],︵二月は別よ︶


終わりの部分が異なり元の文が何なのかは判然としない。


Which hath twenty-eight days clear,︵二十八日ちょうど︶
And twenty-nine in each leap year,︵閏年には二十九日︶

Which has eight and a score︵二十と八日︶
Until leap year gives it one day more,︵閏年にはもう一日︶

Which hath but twenty-eight, in fine,︵正味で二十八日︶
Till leap year make it twenty-nine.︵閏年は二十九日︶

Which has four and twenty-four,︵二十四日と四日︶
And every fourth year, one day more.︵四年ごとにもう一日︶


脚韻を踏まないものもある。:

後半が中世のものに近いものもある。
