  1. ^ Total population is 112,716,599 including the Sinai peninsula. Transcontinental country mainly in Northern Africa and partly in Western Asia.
  • ^ Includes Somaliland which has a population of about 6.2 million.[29][30]
  • ^ Adisputed territory with undetermined political status.[60] Formerly Spanish Sahara up to 1976, administration is currently split between Morocco and the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, both of which claim the entire territory. The Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic's administrative control is limited to approximately 20% of the territory, with the remaining 80% of the territory occupied by Morocco. The United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara is the United Nations peacekeeping mission to the territory (see Western Sahara conflict).
