Wealthy and Snobbish[edit]

The claim that Bearsden "is known as being wealthy and perhaps snobbish" seems POV. Can we attribute it to someone? Bovlb 02:49, 2005 Jan 5 (UTC)

Yes, I wasn't sure about including that. However, it is the view of many people from Glasgow, specifically the poorer suburbs surrounding Bearsden such as Drumchapel, and further afield, Maryhill, Easterhouse and so on. It is certainly wealthier (safe, tree-lined streets; large detached houses; and it comprises the postcode in the UK with the third highest number of millionares (first somewhere in London, then a suburb of Edinburgh)). Being snobbish is more the opinion of other Glaswegians, but I think it is safe to say that it strongly correlates with wealth. mat334 | talk 11:40, Jan 5, 2005 (UTC)
I toned that bit down somewhat, and changed snobbishtoposh. You can have snobbish people, but not really apply it to a whole town. It's like calling a town greedy or something. I definitely don't think it is safe to say snobbishness strongly correlates with wealth, although I agree that it is generally the opinion most Glaswegians hold of Bearsden. Obviously feel free to put back in something to that effect if and when the notion takes you.
Not sure David McLeish qualifies as a terribly notable person? Is he notable because he's from Bearsden? Not especially useful having him there when there is no related article. Looks a little lost, bit I left it in for now.
I also took out the largest houses bit, as there are places around Glasgow where the houses are generally bigger on average, but maybe not as expensive. Cheers. PMcM 23:43, 5 Jan 2005 (UTC)
Sounds like a fair assessment. I'm not very familiar with Bearsden, but your changes seem good. I just wanted to expand it a little more. mat334 | talk 00:15, Jan 6, 2005 (UTC)

Pronunciation[edit]

I have never heard Bearsden being pronounced BERS-den, maybe once on Jackanory as beersdn, my how we laughed.

I would say it's pronounced as in "bears' den". I'm not sure what "BERS-den" means exactly. Bovlb 23:09, 2005 Feb 6 (UTC)
"BERS-den" is the correct form of pronunciation as documented by many sources such as the Columbia Gazetteer of the World. It highlights the emphasis on the first part of the word. However, I agree that "BEARS-den" is more accurate, and suggest you change it to this rather than "bears' den", which could be confusing, being split into two words. mat334 | talk 01:11, Feb 7, 2005 (UTC)
I lived in Bearsden for many years and it is either pronounced with even emphasis on both syllables or the emphasis is on the second syllable. Only those who are speaking derisively place the emphasis on the first syllable. Nfras 03:18, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I live in Bearsden and the correct pronunciation is most definitely "bears' den". I have never heard this "BERS-den" being used by a resident of the area, nor anyone else. There is no emphasis placed on either syllable.

Toponymy[edit]

I don't know how relevant this is but on a 1860's ordnance survey map the house marked Bearsden is a bowling green, presumably the one that's still there at the bottom of Pendicle. It appears New Kilpatrick changed its name to match the commuter railway station (garden suburb ref. Westerton) which in turn was named after the local bowling green. Perhaps the bowling club knows where the name came from. K Ramsay

Things to do Section[edit]

I am not sure that section is appropriately encyclopedic. It's three individual things that are of dubious importance/notability (only one even claims a book about it), and it seems more like an entry for a travel guide than an encyclopedia anyway. Is this section really appropriate? FrozenPurpleCube 22:24, 19 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation[edit]

We cannot cite the pronunciation of Bearsden from a blog forum. Citing things from blogs is exactly the kind of thing that gives Wikipedia a bad name. Anyone of any and no expertise can post anything on such websites. And apart from anything else, from my experience, Bearsden can be pronounced in different ways by difference people, with the stress on first, second or even both syllables. However, "my experience" is just as notable as those of some guy replying to a blog; i.e. not at all. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 15:46, 6 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Merge Westerton, East Dunbartonshire page into Neighbourhoods section[edit]

The Westerton article is very short, and many items of relevence to Westerton are found on this page. The Westerton article requires extensive copy editing and contains unverified facts. I propose to merge that article with the Neighbourhoods section of the Bearsden article on or after 31st May 2010. Wikiwayman (talk) 11:27, 20 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Westerton, East Dunbartonshire is scarcely worth an article and half of it could be removed. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 11:40, 20 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Bearsden & Milngavie Youth Orchestra[edit]

An IP user attempted to add some information about this to the article. Unfortunately the contribution wasn't encyclopedic and was justifiably deleted. Nevertheless, the orchestra has a long history, is a registered charity and looking that their website, some information could be incorporated into the article to accurately reflect the leisure interests of Bearsden residents. If anyone would like help to do this properly, please contact me on my talk page. Wikiwayman (talk) 12:00, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sports[edit]

Perhaps the history of sports and leisure section would be better merged into the leisure activities section?RafikiSykes (talk) 12:07, 19 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

AGREE; the section was really just about the amateur football and golf club, when I moved and merged the section, the article seemed more coherent. Wikiwayman (talk) 19:39, 21 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
