Nigerian "crayfish"[edit]

These are actually large prawns (caridean shrimp) of the genus Macrobrachium like M. vollenhovenii and not true crayfish, as the entirety of continental Africa is devoid of any native freshwater astacideans (though Procambarus clarkii and various Cherax have been introduced and in places established. Their terming as "crayfish" is a colonial British legacy (same as in the Commonwealth countries of the Caribbean, where "crayfish" is used to designate large Macrobrachium spp. as well as marine palinurid rock lobsters and, where introduced, feral Australian Cherax quadricarinatus).
