The Wikipedia Day 16th Birthday Bash NYC was a celebration and mini-conference that was held on Sunday, January 15, 2017, hosted by Wikimedia New York City at the Ace Hotel in Manhattan. The conference was also supported by fellow Free Culture Alliance NYC partners.
The New York City celebration was one of a number of Wikipedia Day worldwide.
Participation: Participation (food and cake!) will be free, with room for ~100 participants
Welcome: All are welcome. We are especially interested in seeing newcomers to join the experienced Wikipedians/Wikimedians. We also hope for the participation of our friends from the Free Culture movement and from cultural institutions interested in developing Open Education projects.
Wifi: There is wifi access, and we will give you the log in details on-site. N.B. Projectors will also probably be available for use by the various presenters.
Food:Ace Hotel will be providing breakfast in the form of coffee, bagels, fruit, etc. from The Breslin as well as a lunch consisting of quinoa bowls and some sides. #yum
Wikipedia Day 16 will be a modified unconference, with dedicated plenary sessions (organized on this wiki), lightning talks to the whole assembly, and open space sessions. The Lightning Talks and Open Space will be determined during the event itself, so bring your ideas with you.

Getting bullies & trolls off your back on Wikipedia: The site is well-known for being unfriendly to women and members of the LGBTQ community. JacksonHeights.nyc: The city has licensed this neighborhood domain to a local nonprofit with which I (Tom Lowenhaupt) am associated. Request - would someone volunteer to talk about Addressing community conduct challenges in volunteer settings? A talk mentioning any issues including mediating conflict, responding to harassment complaints, creating friendly events, and de-escalating tension would be helpful. Wiki is a diverse community and as membership and diversity increases, there are more challenges and even miscommunications which unnecessarily escalate to become more serious. -- Blue Rasberry (talk)
Hardware Track--how to expand the reach of the WMF to communities that lack internet access:NYC Mesh has been working alongside Wikimedia-NYC to bring broadband access to low-income residents. We would like to have a participatory and open space for like-minded individuals (Wikipedians!) to get involved, learn more, and contribute to our process and structure conversations.
