アンソニー・マリオ・ルドヴィチ︵Anthony Mario Ludovici、1882年1月8日 - 1971年4月3日︶は、イギリスの哲学者、社会学者、評論家、多言語話者。貴族主義︵アリストクラシー︶、反平等主義の支持者として知られる、20世紀初頭のイギリスを代表する保守派の作家。美術、形而上学、政治、経済、宗教、男女や人種の差異、衛生、優生学などを主題として著作活動を行った[1]。

画家として、絵や本の挿絵を描くことからキャリアを開始した。1906年に数ヶ月間、彫刻家オーギュスト・ロダンの私設秘書を務めた[2]。その後、30冊以上の本を執筆し、多くの本を翻訳した。

早年期[編集]


ルドヴィチは、1882年1月8日、イギリスのロンドンで、アルバート・ルドヴィチ︵Albert Ludovici︶とマリー・カルス︵Marie Cals︶との間に生まれた。父と祖父︵Albert Ludovici, Sr.︶はともに美術家であり、バスク人、フランス人、ドイツ人、イタリア人の血を引く[3]。イギリスや海外で私立教育を受けたが、主に母親によって教育された[4]。若い頃、1900年のパリ万国博覧会で出会ったハリー・ガイ・ラドクリフ・ドリューと友人となる[5]。その後、ドリューの娘ドロシー︵後にF・M・アレクサンダーに師事︶とジョイス︵建築家ジェーン・ドリューとして知られる︶と親交を深める。1920年3月20日、エルシー・フィニモア・バックリー︵Elsie Finnimore Buckley︶と結婚し、最初は南ロンドンのアッパー・ノーウッドにあるセントラル・ヒル35番地で暮らした。数年間をドイツで過ごし、ニーチェの著作をドイツ語原文で研究した。彼は数ヶ国語に堪能であった。

1906年、彫刻家オーギュスト・ロダンの私設秘書を務め、ロダンと親交を深めた。その後、1923年から﹃Cornhill Magazine﹄に掲載された記事で、ロダンの性格や芸術に関する個人的な経験や自身の意見を書き、1926年には﹃Personal Reminiscences of Auguste Rodin﹄の題で出版された。1908年夏には、ニーチェの初英訳﹃The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche﹄の編集者オスカー・レヴィ博士︵Oscar Levy︶に出会い、親交を深める。ルドヴィチは数巻を分担した[6]。レヴィの紹介で、後に妻となるエルシー・F・バックレーと知り合う[7]。芸術、政治、宗教、そしてフリードリヒ・ニーチェの哲学について講演を始め、ニーチェについては﹃Who is to be Master of the World?: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Friedrich﹄︵1909年︶、﹃Nietzsche: His Life and Works ﹄︵1910年︶を出版した。ニーチェ研究者のウィリアム・マッキンタイア・ソルターは、ルドヴィチの﹃Nietzsche: His Life and Works﹄をニーチェに関する﹁the well-nigh perfect short manual﹂と評した[8]。ニーチェの美学に関する先駆的な著作﹃Nietzsche and Art﹄︵1911年︶は、ヨーロッパで最初の試みの一つであった。同著は1910年11月から翌12月にかけて行われたユニヴァーシティ・カレッジ・ロンドンでの講義が基礎になっている[9]。 スティーブン・アッシュハイムによれば、﹃Nietzsche and Art﹄は、﹁ニーチェ的美術史を、貴族主義的時代の台頭と民主主義的時代の退廃の観点から書こうとする独創的な試み﹂︵a unique attempt to write a Nietzschean history of art in terms of rising aristocratic and decadent-democratic epochs︶だったという[10]。 この年は、貴族院の権力を削減する最初の法である1911年議会法が施行された年である。また、この年はルドヴィチの著作の分岐点であり、より露骨な政治路線への変化であり、それはその後25年間、さらに研ぎ澄まされることになる。

I was told to report to the OC MI6 at the War Office, where my languages could be put to some use and where I contrived to make myself sufficiently useful to be retained. And after two years’ work in intelligence, in 1919, as General Staff Officer, third grade, with the rank of Captain, I rose to be the head of my department (MI6 A).[11]

著作活動[編集]


ルドヴィチの著作は多岐にわたり、社会問題については伝統保守主義的立場をとっていた。自由主義、社会主義、マルクス主義、キリスト教、フェミニズム[13][14][15][16]、多文化主義、消費主義のモダン・カルチャー、伝統への反逆などが、ルドヴィチの主な攻撃対象であった。若い頃、彼の世紀末的︵de siècle︶な読書は、科学と進化論の普及が典型的な中心であった。

1880年代後半に行われたトマス・ヘンリー・ハクスリーとヘンリー・ウェイスの論争に特に影響を受け、若きルドヴィチはハクスリーの影響で不可知論者となった[17]。
"From about my seventeenth year, my reading of science, especially biology, zoology and astronomy, became regular and assiduous. I read every book by Darwin, Haeckel, Huxley, Romanes, Spencer and Proctor that I could lay my hands on. With great avidity, I also read Huxley’s famous controversy with Wace, following the arguments on each side with breathless interest and becoming a convinced agnostic in the process. But the two authors that probably exerted the greatest influence on me in my early twenties were Schopenhauer and Schiller. The former enlightened me enormously on psychology, and I still regard him as the greatest European psychologist who appeared between Montaigne and Freud. Indeed, there is much in his work that anticipates Freud’s discoveries, a fact to which I have more than once called attention, and Nietzsche owed him many a profound observation, the source of which, however, is rarely acknowledged."[18]

﹃A Defence of Aristocracy﹄︵1915年︶で、大衆が支配する政府に対抗してアリストクラシーを擁護した。﹃The False Assumptions of "Democracy"﹄︵1921年︶では、民主主義の考え方やリベラルな態度全般が不自然であるとして攻撃した[要出典]。﹃A Defence of Conservatism﹄︵1927年︶では、伝統は生存に直結するとして伝統を擁護した[24]。

ルドヴィチにとって、平等主義とは個人・男女・人種間の生得的な生物学的差異の否定であった。彼は、凡庸な人間や出来損ないの人間を感傷的に甘やかすことを批判していた。彼の記事は、リミントン子爵が支配し、イギリス人民党と密接な関係にあった極右雑誌﹃ニューパイオニア﹄の常連寄稿者だった[25]。ルドヴィチは繰り返し混血の危険性を警告し、近親相姦は人種混合への適切な対応であると擁護し、﹁近親交配を妨げる障壁を取り除く﹂︵to break down the barriers now preventing the mating of close relatives︶ことが﹁我々の家系の純化﹂︵a purification of our stock︶を行う唯一の方法であるとして、社会は行動すべきだと主張した[26]。

ルドヴィチはナショナリストかつ伝統主義者であり、優生学の支持者であった[27]。 また、チャールズ1世を高く評価する熱心な君主主義者でもあった。1930年代には、イングリッシュ・ミステリーの会合で演説し、その一部は出版された[28]。

晩年[編集]


ノーマン・スウェイツ、トレバー・ブレークモア、コリンソン・オーウェン、W・A・フォイルとともに﹁Right Book Club﹂の選考委員を務めた[29][30]。

第二次世界大戦後、ルドヴィチは無名になった。1936年には、その年に個人的に会ったアドルフ・ヒトラーについて、他の多くのナチスの高官たちとともに熱狂的に著述していた[31]。また、イギリスの歴史にユダヤ人が与えた影響に批判的で、コベット︵Cobbett︶の筆名で﹃The Jews, and the Jews in England﹄︵1938年︶という著作を書いている[要出典]。

ルドヴィチは1940年8月14日に諜報員を解雇され、その後に政治グループ﹁The Right Club﹂のメンバーであったことを原因として家宅捜索され、1940年10月8日金曜日にロンドン警視庁で事情聴取を受け、その後釈放された[要出典]。
